Im pretty sure I dont need to tell you this, but just in case:

When launching parachute flares –

  • Do not look up as you fire it … you’ll get a face full of backblast. Look down at your feet and stay that way until that sucker is waaaaay up in the air
  • If wearing eyewear consider the blast might knock it from your face
  • Make sure to point flare tube straight up and keep pointing straight up until that baby exits the tube

In addition to the parachute flares, also tried the handheld signal flares (like steroidal road flares). These babies are great for signalling, put out tremendous amounts of light and heat, and would be an outstanding source of ignition for any arsonistic endeavours you may have.

I have a trip to Seattle next week. Need to start packing for the trip. My greatest fear, and what a cosmic irony it would be, is to have TEOTWAWKI occur when Im far away from my happily fortified and stocked house. So, naturally, I’ll bring everything I can that I would need to work my way back to it.  Come to think of it, I really need to come up with a ‘standard’ checklist of things to bring on the long-ranging trips. Maybe later.

Im quite happy with the Yugo SKS…I got about two dozen stripper clips for it and they work fine. Its a very handy, robust gun and I hope to get more of them. Ideally, I’d like to have one to keep in the truck at all times with about 20 stripper clips worth of ammo.

  1. Yeah it sucks not being home when the shit hits the fan… it happened to me a few weeks ago here in Richmond.

It rained 14 inches in the course of a couple hours the highways flooded and were impassable so everything was diverted through the city so there was complete gridlock

By the time I got to my side of town the street to get to my car at work was flooded and the street trying to get to my house was also flooded. So I was just screwed. No car no house. Just the company moving truck (which wont fit into my neighborhood.) fortunately it only lasted a few hours and then I could get to both. It just sucked, all my preparation and planning and I ended up a refugee anyway even if only for a little while.

had this concern when we came out to Montana. We were away during the Republican Nat’l convention… who knows what could have happened…

  3. I suggest at least a small SHTF bag. Not so good for TEOTWAWKI, but better than nothing. You know what to put in it. I have a small one I carry into work, just in case I can’t get to the big ruck in my truck out in the parking lot.

It can be difficult to force yourself to carry a small backpack everywhere, but you get used to it. I have a small Altoids-tin survival kit that’s way better than nothing; contents listed on my LJ. Oh, yeah…in some states, if you have an unloaded weapon in a locked box in your backpack, it’s legal. Keep the ammo separate: check local laws before trying this.

Your mileage may vary, but in the situation you posit, a space blanket, flashlight, water, a radio and a big bag ‘o Gorp would have been a comfort, I bet.
