Freezing rain going on here in the Land O’ Zero today. This is the sort of weather that really causes the winter chaos. Oh sure, you can talk about your blizzards and your -30 temps, but the real damages come from these ice storms. Power lines get heavy with ice and snap. Same for tress (which, naturally, land on powerlines that arent already down), and road conditions are just unbelievable.

Is the Zero worried? Is there fear in the Zero’s heart? Is the Zero running down to the supermarket in a pacnicked state to buy milk and bread???
No. Of course not. I am the Zero and the Zero has prepared.

Kerosene in the heaters and lamps, vehicle will be parked away from overhead objects, constantlly updated weather map is playing on the desktop, plenty of food, and the Baygen radios are ready for use if the power fails. In short, I can just look at the weather map, shrug, and say “Hunh.”

Did some geocaching the other day. I usually pack a bunch of zipties in my bag because they can come in handy for all sorts of things. In this case, they safety-wired the girlfriends YakTrax (foot-traction overshoe) to her boots so that if one came off in the snow it wouldnt get lost. Moral of the story: carry zipties. Find them in any hardware store, get several sizes, I carry about 20.

Wonder if LJ has gotten the usericon image servers back up yet…..

  1. Zipties. The baling wire of the 21’st century. 🙂

I really should toss a few of those in the back of my truck… might be able to fit them next to the kitchen sink. 😉

  2. Dude, seriously….its like duct tape without the weight and bulk.

They are also great for impromptu handcuffs. Where they really shine is attaching gear to your webbing, and vice versa. Beat ALICE clips hands down. CostCo usually sells a big container of them in all sorts of sizes and colors. Cant go wrong with that.

  3. Mmmm… you just gave me a great idea for a kidnap/captive shoot I need to re-do. Thanks!

I’ve seen the combo-packs you speak of in Home Depot too. Heck – I have a few I found somewhere that have straps a half inch wide and almost an eighth thick. You could (almost) tow a car with that stuff.

The only drawback I’ve found with them… The cut ends can be awfully sharp. Oopsie!

  4. Just be very careful if the guy you use them on is someone you don’t want to harm… flexi-cuffs (zipties) can cause nerve damage and easily cut off circulation if not used carefully on a suspect…

Of course, if the well-being of your suspect is not a concern… heh…

  5. I have no less than three pairs of handcuffs, so its gonna have to be a ‘group therapy’ day before I need to use the genuine flexcuffs I have here…..
