Winning the loot roll

The big Festivus gift this year? Well, check this out… for the last week or so, the wife has been spending all her time in the living room configuring her computer for some new games that she was interested in playing. Nothing surprising there, after she’s done fighting the forces of evil at her job she often spends a few hours a night fighting them online.

So I open my suspiciously large wrapped gift this morning and inside the box is – a custom gaming PC that she built from parts and spent the last few days configuring and installing, right under my nose. She built it so that it looks like her computer and that way could do all the work on it in front of me without me being the wiser. How cool is that? And the best part? Windows 7….now thats thoughtful! SSD boot drive, awesome graphics card, modular expandable case, etc, etc. and its preloaded with Skyrim, Battlefield and WarCraft.

I’ve been using the same computer for the last seven or ten years and would never have bought one on my own. I tend to just use peoples hand-me-down computers because I’m too cheap to buy a new(er) one. As long as it runs my browser, lets me get email, and that sorta thing Im happy. So a dedicated gaming box…thats quite the toy.

So there you have it….not at all topical or gear-related but still one of the most awesome gifts I’ve ever gotten.

  1. Thats pretty sweet!

    Here’s my AAR.
wife bought me a brand spankin new ICOM IC-7200. A sony action camera that live streams also. And a bunch of other items…

    Merry Christmas.

  2. As a fellow make-do PC person, I can imagine the thrill of the fast boot and quick graphics. Well done to the Mrs. and congrats to you!

    • SSD boot drive is pretty nice, I gotta admit. On my old machine I cold start it, go to the batheroom, get a Coke outta the fridge, pet the dog, come back, and it would still be cycling through its startup.

  3. It’s funny how playing Warcraft teaches you the balancing of different attributes, tactics and strengths when applying them to a problem. Another way of saying that is there is often no ‘right’ or straightforward method to some goals. I recall how excited and frantic I used to get during PVP (player versus player) combat, even though there was no real danger to myself. Now I don’t get excited anymore, but just analyze the options. I’d like to think that some of that sangfroid would carry over to a real world encounter, but who knows?

  4. A newer pc is totally prepper gear and a must for the apocalypse, they just use so much less power to run these days. Anything older than five years will use about double the power of a current machine, both at idle and full load, but will only be about half as powerful.

    • In addition to the new PC, I ditched my iPhone today for a Samsung Galaxy. The ability to replace batteries, add memory, and move files without using an intermediary like iTunes seemed eminently more practical.

      • Androids allow access to the file system as well, with a OTG usb cable, a usb hub, and a mouse and keyboard you have a pretty decent little “computer”.

  5. I’ve gotten lost for days in Skyrim. Huge replayability factor for that one. I’ve clocked over 200 hours in it and around 100 more hours with the expansions and I still haven’t done everything. Hope you enjoy your new rig! I got a gaming keyboard and mouse for festivus and they make a huge difference.
