Article – Police probing death in LA find 1,200 guns, 2 tons ammo

I feel like this is someone we know or should have known………

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police investigating the death of a Los Angeles man uncovered an arsenal inside his home and garage — more than 1,200 guns and about two tons of ammunition, authorities said Monday.

Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith called the number of rifles, pistols and shotguns staggering. Many had never been fired and some were still wrapped in boxes, with price tags still attached.

“Our truck couldn’t carry it all,” Smith told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1HFAKVn). “We had to go back and make another trip.”

I wonder how many of these will ‘go missing’ as the people assigned to handle the case round out their own collections.

This is why you need buddies who, upon news of your death, will keep your stuff safe from the state.

  1. A little farther down the article, the police rep said owning a large number of guns (and ammo) wasn’t illegal – which was mighty nice considering the source. If those guns check out as legally acquired (under Cal rules), and if the heirs aren’t disqualified, they will inherit the guns. As it should be.

  2. “Still in boxes with price tags…..” Maybe a bunch of old Colt and Winchester commemoratives? In Commiefornia they’re “shocked, shocked I tell you”. In Oklahoma or Texas he would just have a small collection.

  3. The LAPD has them. They will soon be cut up and dumped at sea near Catalina.

If heirs with a legitimate claim turn up, they will be stalled until the weapons are disposed of. Even a court order isn’t enough to save a legal weapon in the hands of the LAPD. They are infamous.

Eventually, if the heirs have enough lawyers to throw at the city, they will get a small settlement for the lowest possible valuation on the weapons. Distinctly collectible rarities will receive no extra credit, so to speak…

  4. Might have just been an unorthodox investment plan. I knew a guy growing up who filled his basement with collectible (old and rare) beer cans. Ten years later he made a crap ton of money off those.

  5. “>>>2 tons of ammo…” I make that to be about 60-70 50cal ammo cans of ammo. And that would be if it was mostly poodle-shooter stuff. A 50cal ammo can of .45acp is not anything I’d want to hump very far.(That’s one reason I started using .30cal cans. Waaay easier to pick up and move.

  6. 2 tons of ammo it does explain the shortages. He had it all. lol
Big city department the original find was 5 tons of ammo and 2500 rifles.
I would hate the gov. walking through my stuff before the family gets it.

“This is why you need buddies who, upon news of your death, will keep your stuff safe from the state.” you nailed that one.

    Best regards,
    Roadie

  7. sounds like more gubmint theft, like (google) Reese family Fast and Furious scapegoats? except the feds are allowing the family to survive….4 now!!!!!

  8. The Radio station in that area, KFI is saying that the man’s death was somewhat suspicious and the man was rather unusual. He thought he was part alien and worked for a government agency. Additionally, the total of ammo is about 6.5 tons, not the 2 something mentioned in the article. Strange situation to say the least.
