Fun gun fu, money, weekend plans

A P89 leaves, a P95DC enters. Equilibrium is maintained.

Speaking of Equilibrium, if you like over-the-top gunplay, these two scenes from Equilibrium are some my favorite Hollywood gun fu:

Of course it’s unrealistic and you have to suspend disbelief…thats what makes it fun. Trivia: there’s only a certain amount of decapitations and bullets-through-the-head that you can do in a movie without risking an R or X movie rating for violence. But…if the head in question does not look like a face….if it’s in a helmet, for example…you can bloodily destroy as many as you want. So when you see a lot of bad guys wearing full-face helmets, you can be assured theres going to be a lot of violent head trauma coming up.

The last post about money was interesting in that the comments had more than one person saying they try to be ‘ahead’ on their repeating monthly bills to allow themselves a cushion. You know, I actually do that too. One month I accidentally paid all my bills twice. Th next month, I figured I’d keep paying as I normally do and I’d have that credit laying there in case I needed to concentrate my resources elsewhere. So, I came to it by accident but it has come in handy. However, I do see the point that it is more limiting than just having that same amount available in cash stuffed in the bottom of the gun safe.

Oh..and payday was yesterday, so the emergency fund is back to normal and I can get back to my current financial goals.
==================

Three-day weekend. I’m going to try and get to the range, but we’ll see how that works out. I have a ton of stuff to catch up on and a three day weekend would be ideal for doing it. Among other things, I need to take an ammo inventory and possibly spend a few hours in front of the Dillon RL1050 cranking out 9mm.

And there’s also the usual sundry crap….laundry, housecleaning, etc, etc. I tell ya, after the apocalypse there’s going to be a platoon of desperate coeds in French maids outfits handling this sorta thing for me.

Oh…and I might take a few hours to stat watching the new season of Fear The Walking Dead. I’ve got it all on the video recorder…I just haven’t gotten around to watching it. Maybe I’ll do that to get my motivation up to run the Dillon.

  1. Zero

FTWD is pretty decent so far this season. Surprise character gets …. you know.

On the Dillon progressive loader, is that the marquee model for round crankage? I only own 2 single stage presses and one Lee turret press so have no experience with a progressive. Thoughts on what points are good and bad, if any?

    • Its a fine press. I’ve timed myself in the past and I can do 50 rounds of pistol ammo, start to finish, in a little under two and a half minutes. It’s expensive, of course…about $1500 when I got it…but if you want to load up a ton of ammo, it’s the way to go.

  2. Having been debt free since retirement in 2010, (I’m 62 now) I still struggle with the question, “what is a reasonable amount of cash to keep on hand”. Monthly expenses are minimal, power, phone, insurance etc. I try to keep about $500 in my wallet in case of problems. Maybe I am naïve, but if TSHTF, I don’t think a lot of cash would be that big of benefit. I did buy some (???) face silver, but I wouldn’t have a clue where to exchange it securely. On a different note, I have recently seen blogs I read that the bloggers are having financial difficulties. As an older dude I never conduct financial affairs online, but I would really like to help some of these folks. Is there some way you can extend a message to those people that some type of mailing address may garner input from those that don’t paypal.

    • Hmm…if someone doesn’t have a mailing address for themselves on their blog, then I’d say you’re only recourse is to email them and ask for it. For the record, mine is under “Contact” in the row below the header image on the page.

    • When you say ‘If shtf cash won’t be useful…’ or something like that I would submit you are focusing narrowly on one kind of specific, honestly extreme and largely survivalist fantasy, scenario.

Instead look at actual events that happen in real life. Power outage- cash is useful. Regional disaster- cash is useful, seriously read up on Katrina. Terrorist attack- cash is useful.

There are far more realistic situations where a wad of green solves your problems than an AR-15 or a dozen buckets of wheat.

I don’t intend to be mean and am sorry if it seems to be that way but having a decent amount of cash on hand is vastly underrated in survivalist circles.

  3. I have enjoyed the season but have read many fans did not. I am interested to hear your take. Be Safe.

  4. Interesting that Kurt Wimmer didn’t like the gun fu style used in Equilibriam, he thought it too rote, he wanted it more fluid like a type of dance. This was used in the (could have been great but turned out just meh) film Ultraviolet, specifically in the rooftop shootout. In Equalibriam Kurt is the figure in silhouette at the beginning of the film while the narration explains our dystopic world.

But I’ve only seen the film once. Honest.

I didn’t chime in on the last post but I keep two piles of “emergency” cash, the larger pile in the safe for use in the “atms/debit card readers are down” emergencies and the emergency like today, when someone at the gun show has something I desire at a stupidly low price. I call the latter the “crazy money”, ie; when Larry Potterfield or Lucky Gunner has ammo on clearance, you’d be crazy not to get it at that price.

“after the apocalypse there’s going to be a platoon of desperate coeds in French maids outfits handling this sorta thing for me” gives new meaning to Merry Maids doesn’t it?
