Hmmmm…whats the big threat assessment these days? A few of us LMI’s are still favoring the terrorist-act-leading-to-martial-law scenario. Im still leaning towards a crawling Depression that leads us into a Russian-style of life of lines for toilet paper, rolling brownouts and corruption. Although, honestly, the Chinese/Korean nuclear situation is gaining ground……

Naturally, if youre prepared for the worst case scenario (say, a nukefest, for example) youre automatically prepared for the lesser events (hurrican eor blizzard). So, Im not worried. However, now that Im pretty secure in my basic, primary needs theres an urge to expand….I need some redundancies, more off-site caching, and, ideally, my own personal little hidey-hole in the middle of nowhere. Its that last one that is going to be the masterstroke of my life as Commander Zero.

Its the typical survivalist fantasy: the voice on the radio says the bombs will hit in thirtyseven minutes. You grab your gear, hop in the truck and take you pre-planned route to your hidden, well-stocked, easily-defended and quite safe retreat. Ah, the stuff dreams are made of. Fortunately, Im not exactly living on a high-priority target area like, oh, say, the folks in NY or LA….but even in a town of 75,000 people things can still get ugly in a hurry.

Y’know, a nice, quiet, twenty acres or so at the end of a long dirt road would be nice.

  1. After reading back a bit in this journal — which I must say I find very interesting — I have some questions for discussion. If I were you, I might devote separate entries to them for more debate.

    1. Of the “Wheels Flying Off” scenarios you’ve mentioned, there is one that is Not Like The Others: martial law.
It seems to me that there would be a far greater need for avoidance, concealment and serious offsite caching while still going about a “normal life.” Any “suspicious behavior,” let alone active defense, could turn you into the latest “terrorist”…and standing up to a full complement of FLEOs and/or military is not a bright prospect.
How well does your “worst case scenario” planning accommodate this?

    2. How does one do Survival On A Budget?

    3. What is the role of friends/family/etc. (assuming they are LMI’s) in survival?

More if I think of anything.

In the event of any major ‘trigger’ event, its assumed some variant of martial law will be declared. All LMI’s have enough gear that they wont need to stand on line with the sheeple for their government ration, but we’ll do it anyway so no one gets suspicious. Avoidance and not looking suspicious is paramount.
If they come to round up guns, thats not a huge deal..we have plenty of off-paper stuff with no paper trail so we can hand over our ‘papered’ guns to satisfy the goons and still be just as well armed. Same with food and fuel. We dont keep all our eggs in one basket. Additionally, we all keep three sets of gear…our own with us at our primary residence, one cache elsewhere thats common knowledge to the other LMI’s, and one that no one knows about.

Martial law, as I understand it, is basically curfews, suspension of rights, search/seizures for contraband, etc, etc.

If an event happens bad enough to cause that sort of thing, that same event will also probably be enough to set us on our way to a rallypoint to head to our respective hideyholes where we can sit things out relatively unmolested.

    Posted to later.

    3. What is the role of friends/family/etc. (assuming they are LMI’s) in survival?
Depends. My nearest family is thousands of miles away. I have no family on this side of the country. However, my LMI brother, if he could make it out here, would be welcome and would, no doubt, bring his own gear. In case he doesnt, however, I have enough to completely equip one extra person. If they done mind being armed with non-standard weapons and gear, I can equip probably three more.
My friends are, with the exception of one, all LMI’s…they have their own gear, their own plans, their own ideas…but we’ve all agreed to certain things to increase our advantages..inc. standardizing gear, going in on bulk purchases, pre-arranging communication SOP’s, spending time hunting and camping together, etc. Informally, we’ve agreed to meet at one of the LMI’s homes in the sticks and base from there if it gets really ugly.
