The big cities, perhaps because they would have likely been targeted by multiple warheads in the event of World War III, long ago got stuck on the idea that “any atomic war is the end of the world,” which in turn meant that planning to survive such an event was pointless. This is of course a delusion, but a remarkably tenacious one.

    I have often seen “survivalists” treated as crazies in fiction set after atomic wars. In other words, even if they were right, they’re wrong, Because They Are Not the Right Sort.

    Talk about urban snobbery!

  2. I’ve spent a lot of time over in Huntsville. (I’m a caver, and that area is like Swiss Cheese.) There are a couple of roadside caves in the area that still have their old fallout shelter signs up from Cold War days.
