Paratus 2019

Greetings fellow survivalists! A happy Paratus to you all (well, most of you anyway).

Thats right, gang…today is Paratus – the holiday for surivalists.

This year I decided to be a little extravagant and send Paratus cards to a few fellow preparedness bloggers and other people who have interacted with me over the year. How did the cards turn out? Rather slick, if I do say so myself. Some people got just cards, some people got cards and a small gift. If you didn’t get a card but would have liked to…well…interact with me more and perhaps next year you too can get one of these (not) highly-collectible Paratus cards.

So! The traditions of Paratus have a long and noble history datingback to the times of…uhm…ok, it’s actually a fairly recent holiday. BUT….you can read all about it at the world-famous Paratus FAQ. I won’t recap it here because thats what the FAQ is for.

I did receive Paratus greetings (and even a gift or two) from several people and I am grateful. I’ll give the mail another day or two to make sure anything that was sent has arrived and then, if i received a gift from someone to whom I did not send a card/gift…..then I have to discharge my Paratus obligation of making a self-deprecating statement about my lack of reciprocity. (Check the “How does the gift giving work for Paratus?” part of the FAQ for more details on how that works.)

Ihope you’ll take some time today to engage in the traditional Paratus activities…although some of you live your everyday lives in such a state of preparedness that pretty much everyday is Paratus. If thats the case, I salute you! But as for the rest of you… get out there and shoot today, hang out with your LMI buddies and talk about preparedness-stuff, go to WalMart and pick up a case of canning jars, eat some freeze-drieds, or go watch “Threads” or “Red Dawn” while cleaning your AR.

It’s your holiday…make a new Paratus tradition for your household or something equally interesting. But, regardless, have a happy and well-geared Paratus.

Oh..and if you’re curious what the Paratus cards for this year looked like….

  1. Today was Happy Paratus to myself. Purchasing a Randall 7-5 Fisherman – Hunter sheath knife. Randall is reputedly one of the finest knife manufacturers and has a long waiting list to deliver into one’s hands.. This knife is already in hands of another who chose to sell it.

The 7-5 is a smaller, more practical camping knife you would use everyday, vs. their heavy duty battlefield “Lets Storm the Castle !!” type of knife. I wanted something to hand down to a loved one when its my turn to turn to compost.

  2. Happy Paratus to you as well!
Got my self a portable antenna rig for the hand held radios and the adapter kit so all the units can use it. As for the card – very nice! It ain’t Hallmark and that’s a good thing!

  3. Happy Paratus! While I’m not a Survivalist,( I am an optimist with pessimistic tendencies) I do prepare for the bad times. In the movie recommendations you gave you missed one of the light hearted ones, “The Domestics” A fun movie full of mistakes and forehead slapping scenes, This one is strictly beer and popcorn. Enjoy! Again Happy Paratus. TTFN

  4. Happy Paratus all
This year I gave out to the ladies I know, Victorinox SwissCards, They loved them. It was slightly selfish thing as I know if i am with them they have these. 🙂

  5. Sorry! Didn’t realize that this was an important prepper holiday! Didn’t do a thing today (except had a staring contest with the dog – he won) since it’s the first day in months that didn’t broil your brain bucket if you stayed out a little too long. Just kicked back and relaxed. When the GF gets home I’m planning on grilling blackened fish sandwiches for dinner with slaw and fries and having a couple of cold ones. I DO live by the Boy Scout motto everyday though. Does that count?

    Regards and happy weekend.

  6. I celebrated Paratus by going on a nine day, eight night backpack hunt for sheep in the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. Just got back late tonight. I use these types of trips to fine tune my outdoor equipment to pare it down to what I need to stay comfortable in the backcountry. Almost the whole trip was off trail and moved camp every day, mostly between 9,500 and 10,000 feet with no campfires to spook game. Temperature ranged from sixties to mid twenties, with rain and snow several days. My ruck weight was 40lbs with water and handgun included, (not including rifle). Kifaru pack, zero degree down bag with shelter tarp, 14lbs food, rain gear, kill kit, titanium cup and stove, Swarovski bino’s, merino wool base layer…….anyhow, always a good time and always a learning experience…….keep up the good work. Peace out

  7. Hay Anonymous, Randall is always a great gift. Even to yourself. Ordered a #1 for my first son and a #2 for my second son. Now working on grandsons. #1 for first and #2 for second. Carried by men who were behind it since WW2. Hard men need good tools. I live within driving distance of shop in Orlando Fl. If ever at Disney etc. stop in, will absolutely enjoy. Great Museum. Letters from Presidents, Astronauts, and working men. Randall’s are true art.
For Paratus, spent 1/2 day playing with my #1 grandson. At three and a half, a little young for the range, but we love to play. Spent the time running the house at full speed, screaming. Pure music. The sound of new life. Him sitting on my lap eating ice cream is one of life’s pure pleasures. On the day that I, as Stone Wall Jackson said, “cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees.” I want my grand son to be able to say, my pa sure did love me!
Never forget that for someone, every day, the world does come to an end. Always be prepared.

  8. Well heck I would send a gift, but what the heck do you need? Gold, ammo, a good woman? The PO isn’t reliable enough to ship those.

For the record I’m set on those items, RU?

    Happy Paratus Day.

How about start a campfire and invite a neighbor over Day. Potluck and a keg or spiked punch. Get back to our roots 🙂

    Peace brother

  9. Very cool and appropriate idea. The card is awesome. I will pay it forward to some other LMI and increase the influence of the preparedness mindset!
