Probably one of the most interesting links Ive seen in regards to using shipping containers for shelters. While I wouldnt want to live in one, they certainly would make nice temporary emergency shelters if you stocked them right and made some modifications.

Of course, burying the thing into the side of a hill has alot of appeal…but some of these projects shown at the link look quite nice….esp. the ones that use multiple containers.

bandicoot, looks like the sorta link youd enjoy.

  1. Actually, a friend who spent time in Iraq as a civilian security contractor lived in one. They’re quite common there, even for some of the military FOB’s. They’re often rigged up with all the comforts, including A/C.

  2. We had one at our FOB for a post office and I had two with shelving to to store maps.

I imagine one could start a whole mini-city with shipping containers—one that would look like a port. Imagine the ease of re-zoning…one just gets the straddle crane (or one of those really big forklifts), lifts up a ‘box and moves it to another part of the city–wanna reconfigure the skyline, hey, just move everything around.

I had a short pipe dream of finding an offshore oil platform and setting up a datahaven/community on it and the smaller shipping containers (22 ft.) was the solution to the living area problem. Everything nice, modularized and transportable.

    Definately Road Warrior IV material.

  3. know a few

whom modified and buried such for expediant fallout shelters.damn good strong steel containers for many purposes besides storage. Wildflower

  4. Seen these in use as both shelters and as a workshop for a really dandy rifle-smith hereabouts: his mills and lathes fit in quite nicely and it’s easy to rig lighting.

In some localities around here, it’s just wiser that if you’re going to do FFL work at home you have a separate building on your property. (For instance, if having an FFL and a business license for a county means that the local gendarmes can search the “business premises” at will, a storage container from which you do business keeps them out of your house.) These storage containers make a handy “building” in that they can be easily secured and have lots of space for shelving and racks.
