Just some ramblings

Im fascinated at the notion of the North Koreans determining what movies we can and cannot watch. I have a conspiracy theory that the .gov paid Sony to pull the movie and compensate them for their loss in order to avoid the threatened ‘events’ that would take place at theaters in the US that showed the movie. But…thats all conspiracy theory. On the other hand, you can bet right now that industry underwriters are changing their policies to specifically exempt this sort of blackmail in future studio insurance policies.

For a guy who fancies himself as being somewhat above-average in preparedness and thinking ahead, you wouldn’t think I’d be this far behind on Christmas shopping. And, oddly, its like this every year.

Ryan linked to an excellent land nav post over at Max Velocity. Great reading and very informative. A worthy read for everyone, even those of us who know our way around a map and compass can use some reminders every once in a while.

In local news, that was-it-or-wasnt-it ‘self defense’ shooting turned out to be a ‘wasnt’. The kid shouldnt have snuck into the guys garage, but the guy shouldn’t have gone around town telling everyone he was setting up a trap and that he was staying up nights to “kill some f***in’ kid”. No winners in this thing, but its the best hand out of what was dealt.

I’m looking forward to hearing about everybody’s AAR on their gifts this holiday season. (There are several gift-giving-themed holidays going on this month, so rather than list specific ones I just go with the general catach-all of ‘holiday season’.) And if anyone comes up with some holiday sales on things that are germane to our shared interests, I’d like to hear about ’em.

  1. Perhaps not a winner in the Kaarma case, but a survivor nonetheless is Montana’s castle doctrine. If this dude would have been successful using that law as his defense and gotten away with it, there definitely would have been a clamoring to have it modified if not outright appealed (especially considering the similar case from Missoula a couple of years back that had a different outcome). Its a good law. The outcome of this case makes it even better.

    • Theres already some idiot state Democrat saying that she’s a gunowner too but that we need to repeal the law.

  2. Advantage of being elderly. Neither me or my wife want anything. It’s just clutter in our lives. We get the grandkids gifts. No others. Our kids are OK with that.

  3. can’t speak for this years, but last year the wife bought me a Sig Sauer Scorpion 1911.
    Now that’s an awesome wife…..

  4. After one year of last minute shopping, I swore never again – I do the “gift drawer” thing, acquiring all year on sale a variety of items to please. Now, the wrapping? Well, that remains last minute. As for a good deal…

Now, half off of the LEAF stuff is sometimes NOT a deal, admittedly. But it IS top notch and if you’ve ever craved an item, this may be the time. Getting a Talos for a certain young man who is outgrowing all his other gear.

  5. That guy had a seriously skewed world view. Shooting some stupid kid for breaking into your garage to steal beer is stupid but I can see how it might happen; hear a noise, grab a gun and investigate a struggle ensues or whatnot.

Now PLANNING to shoot somebody for breaking into your garage is even stupider. If you want to prevent that from happening again I’d get better locks.

TELLING people this is your plan is even stupider than it being your plan. The difference between the consequences of a stupid act and those of a premeditated stupid act are often significant.

  6. Seems like everything’s already on sale at after Christmas prices. I stocked up on warm clothes.

  7. This sale has been going on for a while, but you may want to take a look if you haven’t already seen it. 100 bucks mail in rebate for a burris 3x red dot.

  8. Well one thing is for sure, the movie got more press and advertising than a James Franco/Seth Rogan film deserves. I’m also amazed that we the ‘great USA’ are told what we can watch by a dictator run country half a world away that still can’t feed its people properly.
