SMH…. gotta learn to say no

Text message from local coin/gunshop:

“Hey, a couple shotguns just came in. 20 ga double barrel and Win 1200 in 12 ga”

*sigh* Okay, I’ll try to be resolute.

“Whatcha got?”
“Stevens 20 ga. double barrel but it has a small ding in the barrel. Yours for a hundred bucks.”
“Useless. Lemme see the Winchester. Hmm…..Whaddya want for it?”
“$125”
“Dammit.”

Now, I have no need for a Winchester 1200..the cheapest pump shotgun Winchester ever made…and I’m actually not a fan of that rotating bolt lockup either. But…for the price…it’ll go in the closet until I find someone who wants a duck gun or something and I can make fifty bucks off it. Or, I can break it apart, grease it up, and stick it in Deep Storage as a pentary level backup shotgun.

One of these days, I really hope I learn to say no to these sorts of deals.

    • Ignores the logistical cost of introducing new cartridge to the supply chain

      • Or gives you the opportunity to have a firearm that eats another easily found ammunition that is more suited to a young / old slighter built adult you might find. The 20 has some good too, and for a C Note – not bad at all.

        • Nope. Just no reason to add another chambering to the stable of ammo I already keep on hand. The only possible utility this thing would have is as trading stock, but I’d be sitting on it for a while, I think, because of the minor dent in the barrel. Just not enough lipstick to pretty up the logistical pig.

  1. I look at guns like that as part of my savings account. Especially if you get them cheap. You could always turn around and in a couple weeks sell it if you need money.

Especially with your business/ connections unloading a gun or 4 would be easy. Also not dollar denominated and no counter party risk.

As I think about it I should get a couple spare Glock 19’s. Can always sell them later if need be.

    Oh no you won’t.
Sorry I’m from the UK and have seen too many pantomimes (just google “pantomime shout out”).

  3. I have the same affliction. My friends used to make fun of me for buying magsaccessories, and ammo for guns I didn’t own or ever intend to own because the deal was so good. Over the years, they learned that this is a strategy that works and now worship me. (I think)

  4. Wish I could find a deal on a 20ga double like that around here. I already have 4 in the safe, but no doubles.

  5. Commander:
There must be many “preppers” who HAVE to say no to deals like this.
When there is only so much in the pot for supplies, you have to prioritise and ensure you have some of everything.
In some ways it is good to have limits. It teaches you self-control…..
    all the best!

  6. As far as I’m concerned there is no reason what so ever to say ” no to those deals” unless your kids aren’t going to eat because of it.

    • Well, as much as I’m a big fan of one-is-none, there does come a point where acquiring any more of a particular item seems rather pointless and, maybe, counterproductive.
