Habit, I guess

I have 60,000 rounds of .22 ammo on hand.
“Oh, check it out… they have 550 bricks of Federal for $24.99”
AND I BUY ANOTHER BRICK!

I don’t want to say that I’m rooting for the apocalypse, but if, like in fiction, we are reduced to using .22 ammo has a form of currency I will be Fort freakin’ Knox.

I’m overreacting for humourous effect…. I pick up another brick here and there because when I go shooting it seems I always dump a couple hundred rounds of .22. And as a result I like to have my ‘shooting ammo’ stash and my ‘preparedness’ stash. The infrequent purchase of a brick or two every few months is more towards the ‘shooting ammo’ stash.

But….

It IS a lot of ammo sitting there in a pile when you look at it.

  1. I for one never liked the idea of “bartering” with ammo….what’s to stop whomever from using it against you and taking everything you might have?
Call me paranoid but that’s just how my mind works

    • What would you barter with? Food? They eat that and are thus sustained to act against you? Fuel? They throw molotov cocktails at you? Band aids? They heal their wounds and recover so they can attack you.

Reductio ad absurdum, sure… but literally anything you trade with someone can be used against you. I probably wouldnt trade a box of .223 to a guy standing in front of me with an M4 in one hand and an empty Pmag in the other, but I can’t imagine thats going to be the circumstance under which I’d be trading with someone.

        • Hey now the threat of someone trying to tp your house will still persist through the apocolypse lol.

    • There are far more attractive ‘targets’ than the dude who has an endless supply of ammo for sale. He likely has a couple actual firearms, as well.

  2. And I thought my 20,000 some thousand were possibly excessive ( not really). But seriously Zero I do the same thing on sales for .22. You just can’t have enough of the stuff. Pretty universally used. In a pinch can be used for almost any contingency.

  3. Looks like we’ll have to start stockpiling 6.8 as well. Wonder how long till we see most AR platforms transitioning to these new calibers being introduced into service? 300 AAC is already widely available, 6.8 and 6.5 AR’s are already available. Wonder how long 5.56 is going to stay as the default ammo most widely used? Kinda like to give the 6.5 Grendel platform a comparison shoot V my 5.56 M4.

    Best Regards

  4. Can i just put 22 ammo in a ammo box in the garage and never worry it will go bad? Or is it more complicated to store?

    Thanks

    • Generally speaking, store it someplace where you would be comfortable in a light sweater.

Cool and dry would be the main considerations. If you packed a steel ammo can full of .22 ammo, sealed it up tight with good gaskets and placed it on a shelf in your basement, it would be good when your great grandkids take it out to shoot.

I’m sure that if you poke around, you’ll find a CZ piece on ammo storage.

I’ve shot WW2 .22 ammo that was stored under unknown conditions for 60 years and it worked fine. I’ve shot ammo from the Indian Wars that also worked surprisingly well (although that was metallic black powder).

    • Ammo, like guns, has only two real enemies: moisture and politicians. Good, quality, airtight ammo can in a cool, dry place and it’ll last forever.

  5. Just added another 1500 rounds and had some store credit so I picked up 8 more mags. Sitting here inside watching the temp drop like a JDAM. We are enjoying the down time though and apparently the temp will be around negative 10 tonight with the windchill.

  6. Rather be lookin at it than lookin for it! I have piles of the stuff from my Grandad from the 70s-80s. So far no problems with any that I’ve shot. Shot some .32 special out of an old M94 last year that was all corroded and funky looking (the ammo not the 94)- had likely been exposed to moisture. No misfires- every round went boom!

  7. Durring the Great Ammo Drought of 2012-2015 I didn’t feel the desire nor need to pay inflated prices. I have a few bricks of 22 with $7.99 price tags on them. Oh those were the days! Lead and brass my new favorite precious metals to invest in. I had friends offer me $50 for those bricks. Neighbor was shooting ground hogs at my BOL, I took him a Federal Bulk pack of 550 rounds and his eyes lit up and he asked where I found the ammo at since he hadn’t be able to find any. Made a friend for life.
