Another day, another buncha dollars…going out

The nice thing about living in a 100+ year old house is that things were, generally, built much nicer than they are today, there’s a certain sense of charm and style, and each house is usually rather unique. Drawbacks? Ask my plumber. My kitchen is outta commission until tomorrow when they come back to graft a new section of waste pipe in where the old one was. :::sigh::: I was looking forward to using that tax refund to pay the house down faster.

In other news, Im getting my moneys worth out of the snow blower this season. It isnt that we’ve gotten huge snowstorms. Rather, we get an inch here, two inches there, and after a couple weeks of that it starts adding up. Getting around town isnt too much of a challenge, but you gotta watch those California-plated cars.

And then theres gun news. You know it had to be coming, right? I traded off that Marlin 39A for a very nice, older pre-Rem, pre-safety .336 in .30-30. Now, A lever action does nothing a .308 won’t do faster and more accurately…but, its a handy little carbine.

But it can be made handier…….

To that effect, I ordered up a nice set of protected Skinner sights to replace those virtually useless buckhorns. There’ll be a replacement protected front sight as well. After that, the stock goes byebye to be replaced with a Boyds laminate in forest camo. Once thats done, I’ll inlet one of these into the rear stockto give myself a side-mounted sling, and call it a day. Should be a wonderfully useful gun by that point. Sure, I’ll have a few bucks in it that I will never recover but thats fine…this will be one of those guns I have no intention of selling.

A snowy night, where it’s a good idea to stay indoors, can be expensive when you have an internet connection, a gun habit, and low impulse control.

  1. Zero

I know that routine well unfortunately. Most of my winter nights are taken up with reloading/prepping brass. But then I surf the cool stuff that you have so noted can break down the will to not splurge on shit we don’t really need but is so cool to have. One of my last breakdowns was an M1A Socom 16. I resisted for over a year and then in December broke down, traded on of my AR’s and got one. It is sweet and I love it. But 1400.00 bucks ( minus 650.00 for the trade R-15 ) was a hunk. So I know your story on impulse control and I have the same issue.

  2. RE: lever rifles. Always put Wild West Guns ghost rings on ’em, have to look at the Skinners. And, someone needs to devise a reasonable way to make a folding stock for them. A 16′ lever carbine in Dirty Thirty with a folding stock would make an awsome truck gun.

  3. And if the Skinner peep doesn’t give you what you need, I can recommend one of the scout mounts replacing the buck horns. I use a Leupold 2x handgun scope in my XS Sight Systems mount, which has juuuust enough IER capability to make it work. Other than that, the rifle is left as is, except for adding sling mounts (magazine mount on front). Nice brush carbine, if you are new to it, you will probably like it.

  4. I really should not have walked in to the gun store. I should not have looked at the RIA officer;s model in FDE Cerakote. I should not have tried the trigger.

Now I have to wait a few paychecks to afford the Trijicon’s I want to put on the top and the Pachmyer’s I want to wrap around the bottom.

I’m supposed to be getting Glocks for the ammo boxes darnit!

In other news it’s raining. Again. Just when the creeks were almost down to normal.

  5. You’re right. When you are stuck inside, and start looking at different equipment suppliers, then the specter of impulse buying looms large. Still though, even when I do buy something on the spur of the moment, I’m always glad to see it when it arrives.

  6. Trading the 39A is where I would have gone wrong they are very handy and accurate rifles. I think every one should have a 336 just a great rifle I lean toward the 35 Rem but you have to load to get best results a 30-30 is better far when running factory ammo.

A pre safety 336 could have a good trigger if not my experience is the WWG replacement trigger works well. I lean towards the Skinner sight my self above the WWG but that’s just my opinion every one has one. lol

    Best regards,

    Roadie

  7. You’ve got some good posts zero, but my word. I read through them sometimes going “This guy goes through some money”

    • Not really. Since I don’t have a car payment, credit card payment, college loans, or other debt to pay off (other than a mortgage) I can get away with the infrequent gun boondoggle. I live a very frugal life without a lot of things most people take for granted.

  8. I’m familiar with Skinner Sights, having replaced the factory sights on my Ruger Take down 1022 because, well… they were Ruger factory sights. I think you’re going to like the Skinner sights, they’re very well-made and work excellently.
