MH pulls the blinds and turns off the porch light.

Just for giggles, I headed over to Mountain House’s dealer website to see if there were any noticeable changes.

You might say that………

I like MH for their product, and I’ve never had problems with an order, but their customer relationship model would give HK (or Colt, for that matter) a run for it’s money. Not “We’re sorry for the inconvenience. We are working hard to get caught up and provide you with product. Thanks for your understanding.” Nope. That would be too…smart. Instead, we get “We’re busy. Go away.”

I have seen them do this before.

But…it shouldn’t matter to you because you’ve stocked up at one of the several group buys I’ve orchestrated in the past, right? Right???

The biggest change to your and my life over the ChinaFlu will not be the flu itself. It will be the millions of minor changes in lifestyle, routine, procedure, and practice that concern over the ChinaFlu will cause. In other words, our suffering won’t come from being eaten by the bear, our suffering will come from the worrying and defending against the bear.

  1. If there’s some kind of societal disruption, I hope you chronical what you wished you’d done different, if anything, and what was most useful for you.

  2. You often say you buy extra gun stuff to sell when demand rises. Do you try and sell food things now like mountain House to make some $$$?

    • I do group buys once in a while but I don’t keep an inventory of the stuff on hand. heres why: I buy a can and it has a nominal 30-year shelf life. Two years go by and, arguably, it is now a 28-year shelf life. Someone who wants to buy it will demand a discount because of the reduced shelf life (even though practically it makes no difference). And I dont want to have to deal with that sort of thing, so I don’t keep inventory of MH around to sell. I do a group buy every few years and thats it.

  3. Other then the health and medical impacts, the lack of all the chinese crap coming in for a while will have long lasting effects.

And unfortunately, it’s not all crap, as a whole bunch of stuff is only produced in china these days.

    • I do think its an unprecedented opportunity for small American manufacturers/suppliers to get their foot in the door with new customers.

      • Yes, exactly. and the small business guys I know would have just closed the doors and left the stuff in place, so maybe there is stuff to get back into production with minimal effort.

        • No it was packed up and shipped, lost several accounts after NAFTA,switch trailer to ocean can and send it too the port.

  4. Augason Farms is showing some inventory, but also has a header about 1-2 months for processing, and an apology that they are only making the most popular items due to high demand. I was able to add “in stock” items to a cart, but didn’t check out to see what delivery time would be.

I am of the opinion that insisting that something is available for sale, just with a 1 to 2 month delivery, is splitting hairs. If you can’t get it this week, and it’s an ordinary mass produced item, then it’s not available. After all, anyone here prepping for the wuflu is pretty sure the world as we know it today won’t quite be the same in 2 months. I wouldn’t put any money on anything with that long a delivery, period.

  6. CZ,you and Dr. DrewPinsky are in agreement, this is a global PANICDEMIC,the real consequences are all panic driven. A theory is the Chinese may use this to clear a large amount of the debt load that has been on the verge of collapse and initiate another round of economic activity. Hong Kong has already started “Helicopter Money” $10,000HK for everyone, reduced rents etc.
