The world we live in

I simply don’t have the words:

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown privately signed a bill last month ending the requirement for high school students to prove proficiency in reading, writing, and arithmetic before graduation.
……
Backers argued the existing proficiency levels for math and reading presented an unfair challenge for students who do not test well, and Boyle said the new standards for graduation would aid Oregon’s “Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”

This, more than anything else, is how a great society or great nation descends into mediocrity and, ultimately, collapse.

Because a particular demographic ‘tests poorly’, we should eliminate the requirement that they pass those tests. That way, when they go out to get jobs they’ll be qualified to….do what exactly? When you hire someone to do work and they can’t do math or read instructions, you know what you get? Unemployed. If they’re really concerned about these ‘marginalized’ groups, they’d raise the standards so that those folks can get thebest jobs they can.

This isn’t something that should surprise anyone. What’s surprising is that people think this is a good idea. And those people vote. And their vote counts as much as yours. (Unless, of course, they’re an Oregon ‘graduate’ and have trouble reading the ballot).

A long time ago I stopped thinking that society, mine or anyone elses, was capable of being saved from it’s inevitable decline. Remember the scene in one of the Terminator movies where the guy says that his destiny wasn’t to prevent Judgement Day, but rather to survive it? Same thing. I don’t have to prevent or decelerate the descent into whatever it is we’re heading into…I only have to survive it to come out on the other side of it. Thus, I’ve stopped worrying about the gaping hole in the hull and am simply working on making sure I have a clear path to the lifeboats.

But let’s recap: trillions of dollars for ‘infrastructure’ which we are told won’t lead to inflation, supply chain ‘disruptions’, a global pandemic, opportunistic nations jockeying for a better position as the main players deal with the Wuhan Flu, and an American populace that thinks its more important to use the ‘correct’ pronoun than it is to be able to be able to calculate your paycheck or read a job application. If that isn’t a recipe for a bright, new future…well!

And in this way, I feel vindicated for my growing misanthropy. Your mileage may vary, of course, but as for me I wash my hands of the rest of humanity and, frankly, they get what they deserve. If you don’t like what you see, be patient and let natural selection run it’s course. If you think this sort of virtue-siignalling-at-all-costs is a good thing, and it appeals to your ‘wokeness’, well….you’re an idiot but at least you have others to keep you company.

  1. Idiocracy is upon us. Google up one of the tests required back in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s for a student to progress into high school, pretty hard, I couldn’t pass it.

Then again Jimmy Kimmel had a random test on the street to ‘name a country, any country from a map of the world.’ A college grad couldn’t do it.

I’m with you CZ, just hunker down and let things sort out, not much we can do to protect the world from themselves.

    • Jimbo:
      Sorry but I don’t agree!
Who did this leftist fool ask for permission before ignoring reality?
Even “Special Needs” adults (Democrat Voters) should be protected from her and her ilk…

  2. There is no man easier to fool then an uneducated man. That is the goal. In the same vain the same party. The Democrat Party. The party of Slavery, the KuKluxKlan, Jim Crow and segregation. Also was the party the required minorities to take poll tests in order to vote. They would ask minorities ” how many bubbles are in a bar of soap”. How many white beans in this jar. If there is systemic racism in anything in this country. City or county. Township or state. You can bet the Democrat party is in charge of it all. Every state or city where violent riots were allowed to go on and on last summer. Every single one was run by Democrat Mayors or Governors. If there are racists around. The party of the plantation mentality they genetically absorbed during the slave owning period it’s the Democrats.

  3. Another generation that can neither perform simple math in their head, nor read words over 2 syllables. Our new leadership class.

  4. I very much dislike this but you are absolutely correct. And it is a terrible outcome pending…

  5. If i was a member of one of the cited minorities, i would be Severely insulted.

    • Minorities have been systematically insulted ever since the Great Society started – “you’re too stupid \ inept to do what you should do for yourself (earn a living, etc.) so we’ll do it for you” – as a result, the insulteds never learn the lessons that come with making mistakes. Like the frog in the frying pan that slowly heats up, the insulteds were so busy getting in line for handouts that they didn’t realize that they were done before they even knew they were being cooked – and now, given that they do not know how to fend for themselves, it’s almost impossible for any of them to escape the cycle that put them back into chains – and yet over and over, they continue to vote for the people that put them back into chains.

  6. This Oregon situation is just the latest effort to eliminate all standards in society because certain elements will never be able to pass any standards unless they are set at the lowest level.

Even now, when you walk into an emergency room and see a doctor who is a “person of color” (one of the clumsiest expressions ever invented), doesn’t it cross your mind that this fellow/gal in the white coat or scrubs was probably an affirmative action selection for medical school? It should.

    • As I’ve never seen a invisible person but come to that who has? Are we not all a “person of color”?

    • Went to a high school reunion, one of the people I had known(had classes with since grade school) was now a Dentist,he had failed out of our “Advanced Biology”(equal to 200 level premed human physiology, including human cadaver dissection) but due to affirmative action was able get passed.

    • Some of them got their med degree in schools located outside (way outside) the US. Near 3rd world or actual banana republics, I hear.

    • oh and, it’s easy to be dismissive and hunker down until it comes looking for you. i lost my job yesterday thanks to this covidinsanity. i’m prepared to a degree even money wise in a “normal” world but spiraling inflation will eat up my savings that much faster along with higher taxes on everything. they’ll probably outlaw my 20 year old truck in this not-infrastructure bill too. hard to hide from it all.

  7. And– when they are old enough to vote, someone will at the polls to say– just check this box. There all done.

  8. This is just a continuation of the path public education has been on for years. I was in a new high school in Oregon in the late 60s. It was supposed to be very modern, tho I no longer remember the type of education it was supposed to be. It was great for those who were already motivated to learn, but a bunch of us got left in the dust. I graduated, but didn’t realize how poor my education was until I went to college. From then on I was an autodidact & eventually homeschooled my children.

  9. My kids was trying to get into the “gifted” program at his school. It was then that I discovered that white kids needed to score higher than blacks or browns to get in. The teacher said they had to do this because the parents of the blacks and browns “didn’t emphasize education as much as the whites did.” Well, lady, if the parents don’t “emphasize” enough, they doom their kids to menial labor. Since when is that my problem? This is today’s society… If you think your kid’s teachers are trying to give your kid a fair shake, you’re stoned…

Indeed, the people who survived the sinking of Titanic didn’t sit there watching the water rise while at the same time believing the ship couldn’t sink. The people who survived looked for a lifeboat! Better to have and not need than to need and not have…

  10. 50 years ago the car’s owner manual explained how to adjust the valves, now it warns not to drink the contents of the battery.

  11. You can directly blame the Progressives for the decline in the schools. Back in the 1880’s/90’s, they decided that the US shouldn’t have educated workers for the “industrial revolution”, since they wouldn’t be stable employees in the new factories. They worked hard to take control of the schools here in the States so they could dumb down the instruction. Dewy, the guy that developed the “Dewy Decimal System” for Libraries, was one of the founders of that party. BTW, they trained the revolutionaries that took over Russia after WW1, here in NYFC. Wonderful folks, those Progs. Makes me want to hurl when people get eloquent about Theodore Roosevelt.

  12. Yes, we probably are doomed. I’ve been reading “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”, and the parallels are not unexpected. Still, you can’t hate “everyone”. There are good people out there, and we need them. We all have to sleep sometime, so someone has to cover the watch, eh? The trick is to choose wisely.
