Catching up

I don’t know how it happened, but it seems like my life got busier all of a sudden. I suppose thats the way it happens..we stop, look around, and realize we haven’t done anything of our own choosing for almost a week. So, what do I need to do?

Well, I’ve got, literally, a stack of AR’s sitting in the living room that need to go into storage. And I need to find time to finish loading up all that .357 brass I picked up. And I need to check the preponomicon and make sure I’m ‘in the green’ on things. Part of me feels no urgency because the decline and descent into ugly times is seemingly invisible… the buses still run, the lights are on, jobs are to be had, and there’s food in the fridge. Why worry? But when you look at the details, you see cracks in the facade…the mail is hitting new levels of dysfunction, inflation is creeping along, political shenanigans are still the order of the day, supply chain disruptions are making prices and availability sketchy, people are just seemingly getting meaner… theres a rather fatalistic undertone to everything these days.

But…I’ve been saying that for years and…the lights are still on, the taps still flow, the freezer is still full, and I didn’t have to use my AK today. But I’d rather be safe than sorry. And, honestly, I get a sense of satisfaction out of being prepared.

So, as I said, I’ve been letting things pile up as of late and I really need to jump on them and get them taken care of. Most notably going over my checklist and making sure I’m where I want to be on gear and supplies.

When things seem to be ‘going well’ it’s difficult to maintain the focus to get your prep on. After all, no one really gives a thought to umbrellas when the sun is shining…but once it starts raining you wish you’d done things differently. So…if you’ve gotten a little busy, or a little complacent, consider this a reminder to re-focus and Get It Done…. ’cause sitting in a dark house on a winter night is no fun for anyone.

Often quoted to John Lennon but was actually first used in print in a 1957 issue of Reader’s Digest by a man named Allen Saunders.

    • “Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. Delay may give clearer light as to what is best to be done.” – Aaron Burr Jr. (Feb 6, 1756 – Sep 14, 1836) American politician and lawyer. Third vice president of the United States during President Thomas Jefferson’s first term from 1801 to 1805.

Or as my Great Uncle Bill always said – “Never do today what you can do tomorrow, as one day you may die during the night”.

    • Same here… motivation is tough to conjure up after I look at the world minus those rose colored sunglasses.

  2. Commander.
Life today reminds me of the story of the frog and the pan of water.
If you try to put a frog into a pan of hot water, it will immediately try to escape.
But if you put the frog into a COLD pan it will just sit there.
If you then turn on the heat, the frog doesn’t really notice. It can get hotter and hotter – the frog will sit there till he boils…

The heat is on under our pan and few of us can tell…

  3. the world economic forum ran a simulation on global lights/net/bank outage on sept 15th. last simulation was covid and a few weeks later it happened for real. time is short.

  4. I think you nailed it with the comment, “When things seem to be going well, it’s difficult to maintain the focus.” That statement is a life lesson and should be paid attention to.

  5. “you see cracks in the facade…the mail is hitting new levels of dysfunction”

Dang if this is not true. I was waiting on a check that was sent to my PO Box. The PO Box is in adjoining zip code and the post offices are about 15 minutes apart. It took 19 days for my check to arrive after the post mark. What did the postman do crawl on his stomach the whole 10 miles to deliver it!!!!

  6. Commander is a “real” job getting in the way of a real life? I am working 10-12 hrs a day and it is real hard to get stuff done.

    • Pretty much. Im trying to keep three different revenue streams going at all times so that I can be ready for the upcoming…whatever. And keeping three revenue streams going takes enough time that I dont get a lot leftover for goofing around. And Im a guy that likes to goof around.

      • I feel like if this was AK’s you could say these are 3rd world problems…I’d be more focused on getting more trigger fingers with that many AR’s as it takes about 30 people to properly secure a site between rotating shifts, lp/op, qrf, scouts and covering fields of fire.that plus work that needs to get done…time to open up your boarding school for misfit young women…

        • Humanshield:
It USED to be true that AK’s were third-world . Due to the number of M4’s we (indirectly) gave to the Taliban, that is no longer true!

          American tax dollars at work…

          • I’d imagine that leaving all those rifles is another ploy to reduce the supply of parts kits here in the USA.

Describes me as well, CZ. It’s always been easy when someone else says, “I’m done,” for me to reply, “Uh, no.” But when I’m 95% of the way good on my preps, it’s really hard to motivate myself to keep going. Thank God the Great TP Shortage of 2020 “woke” my wife in a big way and often she’s the one reminding me of things that need to be done or be replaced.

Thanks for the reminder that none of us is ever done.

As for your stack of AR’s, have you considered reconfiguring them into say a chandelier, hall tree, or such? It’s a version of the old “hidden in plain sight” tactic. When “they” come for your Evil Black Rifles, they’ll totally overlook your chandelier, hall tree, whatever, I guarantee it. So will burglars.

As for the EBRs, I have my share, but my most recent purchase was a 9mm Ruger Personal PC Carbine, primarily because it doesn’t look like an EBR.
