Video – Why Finland is preparing to defend itself

A rather silly question. Finland has had a rather volatile history with the Soviets/Russians. In this current mood of “will he or won’t he” in regards to Putin’s movements to gain ‘buffer space’ it makes sense to have a strong defensive posture.

Countries that have been on the receiving end of Russian attention are not only increasing their defensive posture, but some are gearing up in a manner that can only be interpreted as ‘FAFO’. Poland, most notably, Crom love ’em, is dedicating a bigger chunk of their GDP into re-arming more than almost anyone else in Europe. And while Poland has had a sad histgory of being the punching bag in just about every European conflict, they seem to have some fire in them these days. Germany, also not a fan of the Russians, is likewise putting their deutschmarks where their dentures are. Even the tiny nations that, no matter how much they spend, will get steamrollered are making plans to use the ‘porcupine strategy’ of making any aggressor pay a high price (looking at you, Estonia).

The real strategy of these nations is not to beat the Russians, because they simply cannot. Their strategy is to hold out long enough until NATO/US comes to their aid. So while the US may not face the prospect of Russian tanks rolling down the street like in Red Dawn, that doesnt mean were not gonna get dragged into something just as intense.

I have an absolutely craptacular track record when it comes to predicting what the Russians will do. I was quite certain Putin was just blustering and saber-rattling when he staged troops at Ukraine’s border. I guess it was just to hard to grasp that a land war in Europe could really happen again.

Nation states are alot of things but stupid is rarely the case. No nation likes risking their economic health…its bad for business and re-elections. So for some of these nations to suddenly take the economic hit of shifting a larger chunk of their GDP towards defense, or ramping up their debt, would seem to indicate that they believe the risk is high enough, or likely enough, that theyre willing to take the fallout (so to speak) of putting a ding or two in the paint of their economy.

Guess we’ll see what happens. But I suppose the smart survivalist should factor in a coming ‘war economy’ into their plans.

  1. Easy. Follow the money. The super wealthy (globalist) that control the EU want the raw materials in Russia, but not through war. Use countries to build up the war machine (make even more money). Increase pressure on Russia until it folds. Move in and scoop up the goodies.

    • Ken:
Take off your Red-colored spectacles and notice that that is EXACTLY what Putin is doing!
The West doesn’t have clean hands here but Russia is the one attacking Nations to steal resources….

      Ceejay

      • Ceejay forgot the years of Ukraine shelling the very provinces that Russian is so busy clearing.

You know the ones that voted with international observation to be part of Russia.

      • Ceejay, wasn’t talking about Russia. Only the west countries. Russia does not have clean hands either. However, after the expansionist US/Euro first place I would place China second place. Russia maybe 3 or 4th place. Russia’s biggest problem is China. The eastern half of Russia is ripe for Chinese take over. China needs natural resources and places for about 2 billion excess Chinese people.

      • Ceejay,I normally like to stay civil but idiocy like this is what puts us ALL IN DANGER! Putin only went in when WE gave the insane midget NUCLEAR WEAPONS! Russia was through in documenting the weapons seized at the nuclear power plant for radiation cover. Do you doubt for a second they would have IMMEDIATELY used them when finished assembling them? The Brits transferred most of their military goods in the weeks leading up the border crossing. Who started this?

  2. Ken has it right. Not only the EU seeking cheap Russian assets. That Blackrock has immense “rebuilding” and minging contracts already in place in Ukraine a lot of wealth extraction is planned for America.

Pity most of the wealth parts are currently inside Russian controlled areas.

Look around folks, that EU had allowed, NAY Encouraged the Islamic infestation of moochers and rapists of Europe (aside I notice Poland and Hungary).

Their economies are shattered from the loss of cheap Russian fuels (looking at the blown-up pipelines FORCING them to buy Expensive AMERICAN Gas).

WHAT DOES EUROPE HAVE that Russia would want to “Take”?

Maybe folks should listen to the message that Putin has said since before the Special Militarty Operation. Quit building up NATO up against OUR Boarders with quick strike Nuclear armed missiles.

But HEY, it’s NOT like the Cuban Missile Crisis or anything, eh?

Just nasty “Orcs” trying to “rebuild (spit) the USSR.

      • How does this bit of recycled wit, change the facts on the ground?

I could post links for all of the above.

But then again you choose to be anonymous.

      • Because unless theres some really obnoxious language, crude racist content, or wildly stupid religious stuff, I pretty much let everything go. If someone wants to say “Its the j00z!!!”, I let them. You know better, I know better, and if its divisive enough the other commenters will pile on. I really don’t like censoring things people say…Im not a 100% free speech absolutist but its close.

        • One of the many great things about the Bunker is that comments are somewhat group regulated. Feel free to act the fool, but don’t whine if you get called on it. Unless you are tossing out some Micah level cray cray, then you need to go.

      • I cannot remember ANYTIME Putin lied. The Orange Flailer is completely divorced from reality on the other hand, but only after being wholly owned by small hats. This is not a racket for Russia but a fight for survival from the bankers, especially after they cut him off and Stole$300 Billion

        • Well then, you have changed not just my mind but my entire world view. And to think all this time I thought Putin was a murdering, lying POS. When in fact he is merely a humble servant of mother Russia doing the best he can when all are against him. On the other hand maybe changing your name to Putinversteher would be a good idea.

  3. “Their strategy is to hold out long enough until NATO/US comes to their aid” – and once again, we’ll commit US resources and possibly US lives to someone else’s problems – IMHO, we should focus on our own US problems first and foremost. Times have changed – is it really our job to be the world’s policeman?

    • I’d have a tough time going against the argument that there is nothing in those regions that is worth the life of a single American serviceman. On the other hand, it could be a case of ‘pay me now or pay me later’…The US says “Not my problem” and the dominoes start falling until it becomes an unavoidable and unwinnable problem for the US. Hard to say. Personally, I think it’s Europe’s problem and Europe should be the one sending in the blood and treasure.

      • I’ve thought, for quite while, that the europeans needed to step up their game. 80 years ago, it made good sense for the US to do the heavy lifting and it was in our interest to do so. Today when you look at the size and economy of EU, they need to do more especially since its their lives and countries on the line.

  4. It would seem that nobody bitching about my comment realizes that zelenski is jewish. I didn’t say anything bad about the jews , I just stated my opinion.

  5. Look at the longer history of this, In 2014, the Ukrainians elected a pro-Russian government, Obama did not like that and had elements of the US Government (along with the Brits and likely others) orchestrate a coup. Zelensky was selected (not elected) by Victoria Nuland, Undersecretary of State to be the leader of Ukraine, Zelensky decided to start killing the ethnic Russians living in the Donbas and other areas of Ukraine, Putin spent several years talking to Zelensky to get him to stop killing them, Finally, after several years, and I believe around 20,000 lives, Putin decided to move in with what was actually a limited operation, There were other reasons, but Ukraine and the EU were just looking for an opportunity to cause issues for the Russians, Major General Smedley Butler (2 time MOH recipient) was right- War is a racket. Lots of money being made off of this, and none of the political leaders, or members of their families will be put at risk, But a lot of Ukrainians and Russians will be killed or permanently maimed. But the BAE, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and other US and foreign companies will make/have made a lot of money. Let the screaming begin, but the real history and issues are a lot deeper than the MSM want’s you to know,

  6. NATO was initiated and billions of our dollars were spent to stop Russian from invading other countries. Don’t care if Ukraine is a NATO member or not, we have a bunch of pussies afraid to fight Russia and showing the world that NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE YOU.

  7. My Finnish friend seethes about NATO pretty often.

The whole thing is absurd. Finland prospered for decades next to USSR, which was far more powerful and dangerous than Russia. But now they suddenly want to be in NATO?

The very manner in which the entry into NATO was manufactured is telling in extreme. Sana Marin was not elected, but installed, in an extremely suspicious scandal, which removed the party leader. She pulled the the country in NATO, and disappeared without a trace.

The entry into NATO, BTW, created an enormous crisis in the Army’s personnel management, as everyone rushed to resign from Army Reserve.

    • My wife is from Finland. Three of her eight siblings live within a half-hour of us. It’s interesting to hear their pros and cons of Finland’s NATO membership.
