I did, in fact, wind up leasing a storage unit today. I need a place to store things like water barrels, wheelbarrows, coils of wire and piping, etc, until I’m ready to move them to the Beta Site. Since that’s not likely to be until spring is well under way, and I already have too much stuff cluttering my house, a storage unit makes sense. And, before anyone gets their knickers in too much of a twist, I have no intention of parking anything terribly valuable there. No guns, no ammo, etc. However, being the cautious type, a game camera or two with cellphone messaging will probably get set up in there.
Waiting for the property owners to come back with their approval of the buy/sell and then I suppose its just a matter of signing the papers and handing over more money than I’ve ever spent on any one thing in my life. (So far.)
In the meantime the ranks of spreadsheets and bookmarked links are growing as I try to force-feed my brain all the things I have to take into consideration for this new undertaking. Like I said, the land purchase will probably be the cheapest part of this whole endeavour.
I was really, really hoping this would close before the end of hunting season so I could actually go out and hunt the property but it doesn’t look like thats in the cards. But next season…oh yes.
Congratulations on purchase and condolences on the magnitude of your growing to do list đ¤đđ
Well, it aint over yet. Still awaiting some paperwork. But when its done, I’ll let you know.
At least you can hand over the money. I had to sign a loan. The next house, I’ll be able to pay for with money I have (I’ve just about got this one paid for, by making extra principal payments). One grows and improves.
Starter houses are great! We need more of themâŚ.along with lowered expectations on the part of the buyers.
Congratulations C0! Wish you the best of health as you develop your dream, and a few close-mouthed friends to help through the rough spots. In my case i didn’t have any of those locally, so i learned to do everything from Youtube. And then it is just a matter of separating the wheat from the chaff.
(Ratchet straps are your friend, properly-formed concrete can give great peace of mind, and never forget the Marine Corps acronym of COCOA (nowadays called OCOKA)).
Don’t know how it works up there, but get 100% of the mineral rights conveyed.
When we bought Rancho Snakebit, we had to pay about an extra $1000 to clean up the tangle of mineral rights from dozens of old owners.
I thought you were married? That is usually more expensive than any piece of property you could buy.
All joking said. Good luck on the property,
Will you need a snowmobile to access it before springtime?
Quite possible, although I’m hoping a four wheeler with chains will do the trick. I’ve no doubt I’ll wind up with both.
A winch can come in mighty handy out in the winter. Check out Badlandâs at Harbor Fright.
I first read that as a âwench can come in mighty handy in the winterâ I guess both are true.
Just in case the four wheeler gets stuck, you might want to add a pair of cross country skis or snowshoes to the four-wheeler, in case it gets bogged down, Hating snow is why I relocated to the Sunshine State when I retired. Also known as “The Gunshine State.
If I get a fourwheeler it’ll definitely have a winch and the necessary gear for a z-rig to pull myself out. But, yeah, snowshoes and other ‘stuck in the middle of nowhere’ stuff.
With service on a Tall Ship I have to recommend a ” gun tackle” or 5 way- 3 sheeve pulley to a 2 sheeve pulley resulting ng in 5 times power with resulting loss of range but will pull anything up to #800 easily
Ive got several books on the subbject including military FM and TM for moving heavy objects and the riggin required. But, yeah, good rope, snatch blocks, and strapping for using trees as anchors is definitely in the Big Spreadsheet.
Zero-it sounds like more or less a done deal, right? Surely they would let you hunt it now as a good will gesture. I guess I hate to see a guy miss hunting season is all. But congrats I know this has been on your bucket list for a long time. One thing I love about my 80 is having my own range so Iâm sure you will put something along those lines together also.
Having your own ranges sounds pretty great. Hopefully you live in a state that lacks Washingtonâs insane property taxesâŚ
Property tax, as of now with the place being undeveloped, is $50.
Thats great.
Camouflage netting over any improvements you make! Doggone county assessor drones and satellite imageryâŚ
Yeah…pricing out surplus military parachutes.
I donât know if you have hog infestation up there, but here in OK you can hunt hogs day and night on private land in or out of hunting season. BACON!
Just a random thought …is that storage unit a Faraday cage for a cell phone..?
Guess we’ll find out.
Hopefully not the hard wayâŚ

Might want to verify what terms the storage business uses to auction off your unit if they decide to . We have seen a couple folks locally lose their storage units and some valuable stuff when it was auctioned off by storage business owners while lease was still good (paperwork error it was claimed) or when the business was sold and the new owners started auctions the 1st day they took over.
Paid ’em for the year up front, nailed a cash discount, scanned the contract into my secure documents folder.
Have had storage units before and first thing to do is set up storage/shelving. Once you start moving stuff in it makes it almost impossible to move it out set up and move it back in or organize it. Did you contact insurance to find if coverage extended to unit or is a rider necessary?
