ATACS of the clones

I’m not a Star Wars person, but when Return Of The Jedi came out I recall being very interested in the camouflage outfits worn by the Rebels on Endor. Here’s an image of what Im talking about:

At the time, I thought it was a rather good camo pattern. Then, many years later, ATACS-FG came out:

A very similar pattern and style of camo, I thought. Apparently, Im not the only one. Columbia (the outdoorwear company, not the country [which, yes I know, is spelled differently]) has introduced a somewhat derivative camo pattern for a series of outwear styled after the movie outfits.

The colors are not the same as in the movie, but I do rather like the poncho/anorak style of design. WW2 die-hards will see some similarities to the old German zeltbahn.

I rather like ATACS-FG and I’m sorry it was, essentially, wiped out by Multicam (or the military ripoff of it…OCP). But I am amused that what I thought was a very good camo pattern, shown in a movie forty years ago, is making a bit of a comeback, in a way, today. Obviously I’m not saying that this product line from Columbia has any merit as actual fieldwear, but it does give one some ideas if they were handy with an industrial sewing machine.

Oddly, I’d swear that when ATACS-FG came out I recall reading on the internet somewhere people saying “Thats the camo pattern from Star Wars”.

Anyway, I thought it was amusing and an opportunity for me to plug one of my favorite camo patterns.

  1. When the military did their testing of 50 or so different patterns, they discovered that Multicam was not the best in any environment – nothing was.

But multicam was second best in almost all environments.

So, they selected that disgusting ACP/UCP pattern…. which failed in every environment.

  2. Propper uniform company used to make BDUs in both regular ATACS as well as the ATACS-FG. I own both and prefer either to what is currently available commercially.

  3. I asked a crew member at Disney Star Wars where I could buy one those cool camo ponchos the team members were wearing. They said I had to be a crew member to get one. Well, that sucked!!!!!

  4. Ditto to WBK, I also vastly preferred ATACS to most patterns especially their desert pattern, still have 2 sets. They are worn but still good. But, I hated those dam mandarin collars on them the same as I hated on military uniforms at the time.

Its a shame the camo makers spend their time now making the latest trendy patterns vs sticking with what actually works. Plus the cost for just one set of most commercial camos breaks the bank of normal folks.

  5. A Russian company bought the exclusive rights to A-TACS FG, A-ATACS AU, and possibly some of the “X” patterns as well. They can produce those and variants based upon them.

I really liked the A-TACS IX pattern but jumped a little too late.

    • That’s what I was going to say, that ATACS disappeared when the Russians started to use it.

I have a few of their partisan suits in ATACS that I wish someone would produce domestically. I think that’s a pretty cool product for law enforcement and well…partisans.

  6. Back when I was still in the reserves, I was at a DRMO on official business….I signed for a triwall of something or other we were going to use for official business, and discovered when we got back to base that almost all the free space in the triwall was full of surplus chocolate chip desert BDU’s….in my size. We couldn’t put them on the books, couldn’t return them…..and nobody else wanted them or wore that size (XL-Tall blouse, L-L trousers)

Those became my clothes to trash, for decades…
