Taking opportunities where I can

Every workday I do a bank deposit for my employer. Conveniently, there’s an Albertson’s grocery near the bank, so after I do my deposit I do a fast run through the meat department at Albertson’s looking for remaindered meat discounts. Today was a good day:

Organic Angus 85/15 ground beef knocked down by 50%. That puts it to $4.99 per pound. And its already in convenient easy-to-stack one-pound vacuum-sealed bricks. Well, I guess I’ll take ’em all. Contacted a friend to see if they wanted me to pick some up for them, so I’ll be spreading the good fortune around a bit. Still gonna have about 30# to tuck away in the freezer.

I got a similar deal many years ago, but back then it was $1.50 per pound. But that was 15 years ago before inflation worked its magic. Because Im a numbers kinda guy, I price compared against CostCo.

CostCo has 88/12 at $5.79…about 13% more than the remaindered stuff from Albertson’s. But its in bulk and needs to be repackaged. So, yeah, worth the effort…IMHO.

Considering inflation and other economic uncertainty, its not a bad idea to take advantage of these sorts of opportunities when they arise.

Its a sad state of affairs where $5 a pound is considered a bargain for regular hamburger meat.

  1. You need to find a rancher near you and get it straight from the hoof…They are always at our farmers market and that way you know exactly where your beef is coming from…

  2. So they send the man with the Guns and the situation awareness out with the cash? Sounds like your boss knows how your head works.

    • Dude, previous place I worked at I was sent to shadow our PM when we had a problem with a drug dealer in the building. Had set of plates and MP5 clone in my office behind my desk.

  3. I assume in Missoula you have all 3 of the big guys including Walmart and wonderful Winco? Which of the 3 do you see more sales like this at?

    • All of them do some form of discounting on meat thats hitting the end of its use-by date. WinCo has the worst discount, which is usually 10%. Albertsons vacillates between 30% and 50%, but I find that thye re willing to sometimes go from 30 to 50 if you take the entire bunch. CostCo never marks down the meats. Rosauers does similar to ALbertsons, although Ive only seen 30% there.

  4. If memory serves, don’t you usually approach the manager in this situation and ask for an even larger discount if you’re willing to take the entire lot off his hands?

    • SOmetimes. But the discount is never below 50%, and since these were already at 50% there was no poin. If theyd been at 30%, different story.

  5. Around here, recently I’ve seen sirloin steak sometimes less than ground and both less than stew meat, but our pricing seems really odd.
