Ooops I did it again

“How do you accidentally buy a gun?” is a perfectly reasonable question. I’ve mentioned it here.

Made the mistake of walking into a gun sho pon my lunch hour yesterday. The guy behind the counter is starting to recognize me because a) I have an SOT which means he’s more likely to make a sale to me than to someone who has to go get fingerprinted and photographed, and b) I almost exclusively buy used guns, which they often have on consignment at a rather big bite.

We get to talking and he’s telling me of some full-autos he has for sale, including a freakin’ Lewis gun and an FNC. He also has some MAC-10 type full -autos. I told him that while the only thing there that might interest me is the FNC (but not at over $20k) but what I’m really after is a full-auto Uzi. After talking machineguns for a few minutes I asked what he had I might like. Interestingly he pulled out a Browning copy of a Winchester High Wall in .45-70 with a Badger barrel on it. Beautiful gun but not really practical for me. A Belgian Mauser? Meh. Ruger PC Carbine? AH…lemme see that.

Just a plain Jane Ruger PC carbine in the crappy factory stock. It was only a few dollars less than what I could order  a new one for. I need a better deal than that, Is it a consignment piece, I ask? It was. So I said call the guy and tell him I’m a buyer at [20% less than what its priced at}, I figured the guy would say no and that would be that.

TL,DR: I just ordered an ODG Magpul Backpacker stock for my new Ruger 9mm carbine.

With the abundance of affordable Forced Reset Triggers and Super Safeties, do you think the full-auto market prices will come down?

    • Nope…because even if you could make the argument that they are functionally identical (which I dont think they are) the demand for a ‘genuine’ fullauto will always be there.

      • Yea they will only come down if the NFA goes bye bye…Also you are worse than a woman buying shoes all the time😂

  2. Having read your blog regularly for the better part of two decades, I have an inkling of the personal firearm collection you have amassed.

I’m genuinely curious if you ever think that instead of buying yet one more of a firearm platform you already own xxx of, why not save the money and put it towards something that would genuinely excite you and be fun to shoot, rather than one more semi-disposable tool. Like, for instance, that full-auto Uzi, or a really nice 2011, or a $15k precision rifle with a $5k scope, or a beautiful bbq gun?

I understand the desire as a prepper to have redundancy in your critical tools, but surely by now you’ve achieved that and then some…

    • I’ve actually kind of already done that. I have a few pure ‘fun’ guns…my 29″ 7mm Mauser, my BBQ gun, the CZ .22s, and a few others. If theres anything left that I really want it would be a fine 7×57 Mauser in the old European style with a thin wrist stock, express sights, 3/4″ sling, etc, etc.

        • Those are all pre-1899 guns, I believe. Since I want it on a 98 Mauser, thats a very small window for him to have one. I don’t mind a Mauser made after 1899 since I’m not concerned about its federal status as an antique.

          • Maybe one of the Swedish 6.5×55 bolts like the M38 short rifle. Or a Swiss K31 7.55mm which have quite a reputation for accuracy. You may already have one or both of these, as some years back, they were available on surplus market for close to $100 back then. Not so now.

          • Funny you should mention. My neighbor won a gun off GunBroker and it turtned out he got buyers remorse and didnt want it so I took it off his hands. Its a Husqy 1943 6.5×55 on a Bell & Carlson stock and made into a Scout rifle. I don’t feel like adding a new caliber to my logistics table, but its pretty cute.

  3. The PC Carbine is a fine rifle. Make sure you get the glock mag well adaptor if it didn’t come with it already. It ships from the factory with the Ruger mag well and includes the Glock.

Also, don’t forget a folder backpack to go along with it..makes a great trunk gun!

  4. an UZI ??? >> You’re kidding – Israel crated up theirs decades ago and they joined the desert warehouses of weapons>>>

labeled ” Open Only In the Case of Iran Invasion”

  5. I thank the heavens there is someone e out there that buys more guns than I do. I thought I might be developing a problem.

  6. I have to admit at a friends ‘full auto shoot’ the Uzi was my favorite, very controllable and a lot of fun. The Thompson was my 2nd favorite, but heavy even with the short barrel.

    • I also enjoy a full auto Uzi, but was surprised at the relatively slow cycle rate. I suppose that’s what helps make it so controllable.

      • Put a buffer in it to increase the rate of fire some and its actually more controlable. As it is, the Uzi is slow enough that you can feel both the recoil and the counter recoil. With a buffer cut to the right size it’ll run a bit faster and you don’t get the counter recoil as the bolt changes direction of travel.

Thats my experience anyway. My two favorite subconscious to shoot are the Beretta PM12S and the Sterling. Both are post samples so if I give up the license I have to give up the guns.

  7. Love my Ruger PC-9. Use it with Magpul 21 round mags and Plus P ammo. I ditched the factory stock for an Archangel. Like it much better but a little more work to eject mags.

  8. Is a browning 45-70 copy a quality rifle and If so can you point me to which gum shop .

My business email bigskywindmills@gmail please aif you see this

  9. The PC carbine is a nice gun, my only complaint is that like everything else Ruger the price goes up when that of competing guns is going down.

Long term, useful guns will keep their value better than almost anything else. While I agree paperwork and status is a concern, I don’t think it’s a huge one unless you’re in very liberal areas.

As far as machine guns: I have a couple but I rarely shoot them. I’m an 07 with SOT – I can and do make what I want, but turns out even then I don’t shoot them alot, and if you’re a prepper they a MUCH larger ammo supply!

    • At the risk of irritating all of the “full auto” aficionados…. You can keep your Uzi, and your Tommy guns.

For “sub guns” the MP5 and the” Grease Gun” have had it locked up for a long, long time

For serious business….a rifle squad equipped with BAR’s and M1 Garands will get the job done. Time tested.

      Cheers,

      • I had an Iranian MP5 in 2005-2006 when I was in Iraq. Fantastic gun!
As to the M1 and BAR. They will…but why limit yourself to 100 year-old dinosaurs?
The M1 was a fine rifle for its day. I have two. It would almost be my last resort to take to war. Clumsy to load, almost impossible to top off, long, heavy, heavy ammunition…I’d take an M4 (again) any day of the week.
The BAR at least is easy to load. Same thing though. Long, heavy, heavy ammunition-there are better choices out there.

    • The straight 30 round MP5 mags are everywhere if you have the $$$. They look ‘cool’, but offer no advantage over curved.

  10. I can relate to the buying virus, trust your gut and my gut is telling me to buy and I don’t have much longer.

Just picked up two Ruger P-89s under $300 each this week. Neighbor brought over a CZ 52 because he needed the money and the 7.62 x 25 caliber is hot.

Two Ruger SP101s last month because I wanted the 3″ and the 2.25″ barrel. I have become enamored with the Ithaca Model 37’s (found one in the greenish/grey Parkerized military version!) but now that I have five (12ga, 16ga and 20ga) the lust is wearing off.

Sig Sauer P210 carry because it’s the sexy younger sister of the 1911 (with no grip safety) and fits my hand perfectly.

Now I have to work on the full auto Thompson SMG.

  11. Start reading the post…”oh, yeah that’s right I have a Ruger PC Carbine. I need to pull that out and do some shooting.”
Magpul stock? Dammit…now I’ve gone and ordered one of those.
Great reminder though cause I’ve wanted to get a suppressor for 9mm…..dang rabbit holes.
