Compromise

Unfortunately, the environment I work in is full of ‘woke’ types who believe that the answer to every problem is solved by .gov spending money it takes from its citizens. As such, I was subjected to listening to two coworkers in the break room discussing why no one needs an assault rifle to hunt deer and how reasonable compromises need to be made.

Funny thing about those compromises…theyre kind of a one-way street, and not in my favor. In a compromise, no one gets everything they want but everyone gets something, right? So in ‘compromise gun legislation’ what do I get that I don’t already have? Let me give you an example – the lefties will say that they want to ban all assault weapons, nut they will compromise by allowing grandfathered weapons to remain. Okay, so they want a full ban but will compromise on a grandfathered ban. Thats them getting something they didnt have before even though its not exactly what they wanted at the start…thats the compromise. So, where’s the part of the compromise that benefits me? They’ll say the part where I get what I want is where I get to keep my old AR15 instead of having to run it in. But…I already had that benefit before the compromise.

To give a better example: I want to cut off your hand. You, naturally, are opposed to this idea. I say that you should be reasonable …I’ll just cut off three of your fingers and that’ll be the compromise. See the point? You are giving up something without getting anything back that you didnt already have.

To the left, a compromise is great…they get something they didn’t already have…all they have to do is lower the expectations. They want a total ban, they’ll settle for a grandfathered ban. They want a total magazine ban, they’ll settle for grandfathering magazines. They get something they didn’t already have before. But…what do I get? Why, you get to keep your old rifles and your old magazines, they’ll say. Well…I already had those, so what do I get out of this compromise? Nothing, it appears.

Sidestepping the whole of issue of not compromising on the restriction or elimination of a fundamental right, a compromise is supposed to be about both sides getting something they want. If they’re going to take my ability to buy a Glock happystick away from me, they should offer me something I want in order to facilitate my cooperation. Thats how compromise works.

So when some lefty starts saying the ‘gun nuts’ need to compromise, be sure to ask them what they’re willing to give up on their end.

  1. An example of a compromise was the “Firearm Owners’ Protection Act” under Reagan that banned the sale of machine guns to civilians made after 1986, in return there were protections put in place to allow people to travel through any state, no matter how anti-gun, with their guns as long as they were stored in a certain manner.

You don’t have to like the trade but presumably both sides got something, one side forever limited the supply of machine guns available to civilians (yes, they are still an NFA class 3 item and all that) and the other side was given the freedom of movement they did not have before.

An example today would be something like a full 50 state (plus DC) recognition of permit less (“constitutional”) carry for an assault weapons and “high capacity” magazine ban. Some people might agree its worth only having 10 rounds in their pistol as long as they can at least carry it around downtown NYC and Chicago, etc. I wouldn’t take the deal but there you have both sides gaining something compared to the status quo.

    • I am just amazed at the logic here! I have a question. So you “compromise” on nation wide carry. What are you going to “compromise” away when the next month the gun control industry comes back with another “common sense gun safety law” and wants you to compromise again? And the next month after that one? And again until you don’t have anything to compromise? Remember their goal is not compromise. They don’t want anyone to own icky guns. Even government. They live in fantasy land, not reality. I will be so happy when schools reopen. Third graders should be outside playing, not on the net.

    • The 1986 FOPA was NOT a compromise. The ‘no new machineguns for mere civilians’ portion was a last-minute amendment, intended as a poison pill to derail the entire bill. The Democrats assumed that the poison pill would be enough to stop the bill dead in its tracks, and give them political points to be played against both Democrats (“Look, the NRA is so crazy they insist on machineguns for toddlers! And they can’t get anything through Congress! Paper tiger!”) and Republicans (“See, the NRA is in the grip of fanatics! And they can’t get anything through Congress! Paper tiger!”)

We didn’t get anything out of it that we had not had previously — we merely got to enjoy a few scraps of privileges — not rights being restored. A few of the more pointless of the infringements of the 1968 Gun Control Act were removed — the utterly pointless, utterly useless ‘ammunition registry’ for one (am I the only person here old enough to remember having to show ID and sign in the big bound book every time I bought ammunition?) and the bans on mail order (and phone order, eventually online order) ammunition and component sales.

The “right to travel” portion of the FOPA has been routinely ignored by the usual suspects — would you risk crossing New Jersey with a gun in your vehicle? About the only part that benefitted the average gun owner — besides the removal of the ammunition registry — was the removal of the import ban on surplus firearms. And even that was laden with restrictions that did not exist prior to 1968.

And the gun control fanatics promptly set about reinstating as many of the restrictions as they could. At the state level if they could not get them at the federal level. Ammunition registries, bans on mail/phone/online ammunition sales. De facto bans on surplus handguns (so-called “safety” standards based on nothing objective).

No compromise is possible with people who quite literally want YOU in prison or dead for not accepting their hoplophobic worldview.

  2. The words “What’s in it for me?” need to be used more often in life.

    • True.

It’s like when my staff says something like “..but last week I worked an extra shift..”

What did you do for me -today-?

    • I agree – in fact, I proudly wear a tee shirt that says just “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME” in bold letters – and I’ve noticed that people that I’d classify as “takers” (usually but not always liberals) don’t like seeing the shirt, whereas people that earned what they have and don’t wanna share it, seem to really like seeing the shirt.

  3. 4 months. In four quick months, the marxists are going to get shellacked. There’s no point to compromise when we know a tsunami is going to sweep these soy-sipping, green-haired, man-buns out to sea.

    • They OPENLY Cheated and Got away with it.

They ignored, silenced and arrested folks that openly defied their cheating. The mass Media openly supported their cheating, so Joe 6 pack who gets his information from them is actually thinking maybe the cheating wasn’t that bad and that both sides cheat so….

You really think they suddenly got Honest and will walk away IF they “Lose” the next election?

AntiFa and Burn Loot Murder are on leashes right now awaiting their deployment with police protection, just like last time.

Trusted friends are a treasure during times of troubles.

  4. “So when some lefty starts saying the ‘gun nuts’ need to compromise, be sure to ask them what they’re willing to give up on their end.”

It’s long been proven that dialog and honest discussion with Lefties is a completely unproductive exercise because the ratchet they operate goes only one way. Every single “compromise” Americans have made with the Left, on every issue, has resulted in loss of liberty and freedom.

The correct response to them is: “No. We’re not giving up anything.”

  5. Compromise is another term for “surrender”. It may only be a partial surrender, but it is surrender,

  6. “I’ll let you ban assault weapons, but I get to carry grenades.”
    > Liberal head explodes<

  7. I am sure China would love to have their employee Joe B to eliminate our most popular self defense item

    • Redbull:
China doesn’t own Biden – Idiot Dimocrats saved China a fortune by choosing him themselves!
China must have bust a gut laughing…

      Ceejay

  8. My response any more is “What part of ‘Shall Not be Infringed’ don’t you Understand?”. ALL ‘gun laws’ are Unconstitutional from the Start, and we need to throw that in the Faces of the leftist/bolshevik/commie scum at every chance.
I have No Intention of ‘obeying’ any “Assault Weapons Ban” that Pedo Joe and the commiecrats ‘Pass’. I Doubt that they have given any thought to the Fact that if they outlaw Semi-Auto Arms, that the “Outlaws” may just go Full Auto, (and Quietly, too) on their asses….

  9. To the left compromise is one bite of the Elephant, eventually they will eat the whole Elephant and there will be nothing left. So, how do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time.
How do you get total gun control, one bite a time!

Moral of this story, don’t get bit!

    • 3rdMan:
You are SORT of correct – Instead of saying “Don’t get bit”, say “If you try to bite ME, I’ll bite YOU!”

      Ceejay

      • Don’t just bite back, get your teeth in their nose and pull all their teeth while they scream. Nothing is more feared than being eaten alive, make them very afraid.

  10. I usually counter the whole concept of “compromise” by telling them that they have the wrong interpretation of the word. I then ask if they would take a flight on an airplane whose structural integrity was compromised?

  11. I’m tired of giving up my rights little bit here a little bit there , No Compromise anymore .

  12. I’ll compromise, I’ll give up nukes but keeping my single shot 155mm howitzer. Concealed carry might be a little tough but nothing compares to being able to reach out and touch someone that deserves to have their day ruined. Makes everyone elses Independence day fireworks look lame(don’t stare at the illumination round). Don’t forget to ask for their speech permit and tell them STFU until they can produce a Assualt Speech Permit. I feel sorry for you Commander but is a check worth such a Hostile environment (document these occurances and consult a qualified attorney). Sometimes you have to go full Fight Club and don’t be afraid to punch low.

  13. “What’s in it for me?”
    ” you’ll get more safety!! ”
Somethin, something some old long dead founding father quoted long ago comes to mind.

A meme going around on the left saying stuff about ‘freedom is going to school and not getting shot by an assault rifle. Freedom is choosing to do with one’s body, etc etc. I posted “nobody said freedom is supposed to be easy, sometimes freedom is a little dangerous.’
