Price increase

About two months ago, back in July, I made a post about Winco having gotten in a bunch of Augason Farms products. Please pay attention to the butter powder: Twenty bucks a can for the butter powder. Hmm..okay, seems reasonable. Cut to today at Winco:

Thats about a 66% increase from what it was two months ago. Maybe the original posting was of a special promotional price. Or maybe that ‘transitory inflation’ has been busy. Or maybe Augason marked the MSRP up a whole bunch. Beats me. But here’s what I do know: if you had bought it back in July, your hundred bucks would have gotten you five cans. Today, you’d get three. Strike while the iron is hot, mi amigos y amigas, because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

ETA: Yes, I know I can get this stuff cheaper on Amazon. The point of the post was to illustrate that sometimes savage price hikes occur with absolutely zero warning.

  1. Yes. My own salesman quote to those folks on the fence dawdiling over the sticker shock price of a quality firearm purchase to arm themselves up for spicy was “whatever you pay today is certainly to be cheaper than what you must pay later on”. (Inflation is regular like the weather) That usually got those wheels turning in their heads. A follow on proverb of “a bird in the hand is better than a bird in the bush” usually trips mental circuitry as well.. Another Farengi rule of aquisition is O.P.M. “other people’s money”, on key strategic buying decisions pry out that credit card and use it to secure the goods and merchandise into your own possession, then and there, don’t waffle about on those primacy items. Be disciplined and pay down and clear that debt a.s.a.p. for any other future needs or opportunities. Most readership has indeed seen this crappy movie play out the last few years, and over decades as well. Any one with a stable or secure base, compound, hermitage etc. Should probably be set up like a quartermaster depot, and stacked to the rafters like a cold war bunker. The current trajectories do not bode well at all.

    Stay stocked, stay frosty.

  2. Anyone who buys the groceries knows damn well ‘inflation’ isn’t anywhere near 8%.
It’s easily 17%, and very many things are up over 30%.

    • yes, i just bought 3 cans for 17.50 on Amazon, powdered eggs were 60 bucks, i took a hard pass on the egg’s.
Augason Farms can and will price themselves out of my business eventually, like many other company’s have.
they have good products, but damn who can afford em.

  3. While America has been sleeping, food processing plants are being destroyed, dairy farms are shutting down and fuel costs have more than doubled. The Soros goons, Deep State and Federal Reserve have all been very busy.

    • Great price on Amazon for the #10 can of banana chips – $8.98 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096EVMTE). They only let you buy four but I’m going to ask a couple family members to buy the max for me so that I can put a couple cases of these away.

I’ve ordered these half a dozen time since 2018 (tasty treats!) and the lowest they’ve been over the past 5 years is $9.09.

Just thought I’d share that with you…

  4. I’ve recently been following https://m3melody.substack.com/, a blog that covers residential and commercial real estate (including short-term and long-term rentals) focusing on the Sunbelt.

Our various layers of government…and the media…all tell us we’re in a housing crisis because we have a shortage of housing. This “shortage” has driven investment in residential and commercial real estate, and now…due to a number of factors…the bottom is falling out.

Melody’s position is that the data clearly shows an oversupply of housing across the board, even in destination Red-ish states like Florida and Texas. And if I read it right, her implication is that we’re heading for a real estate – residential AND commercial -collapse greater than the magnitude of 2008’s party.

This time driven by not so much crazy loans, but by a general economic pullback in conjunction with sky-high inflation and a decrease in the demand for CRE. In short, a perfect storm.

And our government lies to us about the economy every darn day. IMHO we have the worst political administration in the history of the country right now, “running things“ during some very bad economic times…bad economic times were caused by the very policies they enacted. So…it ain’t gonna get better until there is a change in direction. And that needed change is being actively fought by those who want to retain power.

Normalcy bias gets all of us. We need to stock up on FOOD, for God’s sake?

    Well, yes. Yes we do.

    • get out of town, get out of debt, have your own water supply, plenty of food stocked until you can get a large garden up and going, i’m talking acres planted JIC… oh and stay away from crowds!!
it’s a lot of effort, but it’s worth the peace of mind that comes with it.
to walk outside and hear the birds singing rather than the neighbors and the traffic going up and down the street. it took us 30 yrs but it was worth all the effort. it can be done, you just have to take that first step.
if a person like me can do it on a plumbers wages so can others.

  5. On the topic of long-term storage food prices, here’s one I found hard to believe. I’ve bought a fair amount of Mountain House #10 cans, but most of it was 10-12 years ago. So maybe a month ago I got an email from Mountain House saying they were having a 50%-off sale on #10 cans. I assumed it had to be a scam, somebody pretending to be MH, so instead of clicking a link, I opened a browser and went straight to the MH website from there. Sure enough, big ribbon graphic announcing #10 cans for half price “for a limited time.”

I placed an order on Sept. 12, but didn’t get an acknowledgment email. A week later, on Sept. 19 I emailed MH Customer Service and got a response the next day saying the sale had overloaded their order intake system, but I should be getting an email in a day or so. Sure enough, the next day I got an email acknowledgement and a tracking number. I’ve checked on the shipment in the UPS system and it’s due to be delivered to me tomorrow, Sept. 25.

If you like Mountain House freeze drieds, you’d better hit that site soon. A few of the varieties are gone, but there are plenty left. Honestly, I can’t believe the sale has lasted this long. Half price on Mountain House is unheard of as far as I’m concerned.
