Peripheral notoriety

Friend of The Blog ™, Tam, over at View From The Porch has a post about the Ruger P-series. I have a few P89DC but my favorite is the P95DC. It’s clunky, bulky, primitive in a pre-picatinny kind of way, with a DA/SA system that leaves a bit to be desired. Why do I love them so much? Because they are utterly unkillable and reliable. For $200 you can’t buy a more reliable and durable gun. Its prolific nature in evidence lockers throughout the US attests to the staggering number made, the low price point, and the abject immortality of it.

The notoriety? That ugly evidence-locker P89 on the cover of the book used to be mine.

Nowadays, the Palmetto Dagger is leaning towards my choice for cheap-and-reliable tertiary level of gun, although I’m not sure about it’s durability. But, compared to a P-series, the only thing more unbreakable is a lump of depleted uranium.

I should pull one of these Daggers off the shelf and send it to Tam for her to bang around.

  1. I have a few Ruger DA and SA revolvers, but the only Ruger Auto I have is the Mark II. Strange that – Ruger in my youth was always my choice, but not the autoloaders.

  2. Never cared much for the Ruger! Just never felt right in my hands. More of a Glock and Sig guy these days. Just a little fun fact, it’s reported that the 20th million Glock was sold in 2020. Probably just hair more than all the Rugar pistols ever sold. Glock is probably the most prolific handgun ever produced to date.

    • Most prolific handgun or most prolific handgun brand? If its the most prolific handgun, then which model is it? Or, do you mean the brand is the most prolific.

      • It’s important that you like the same handgun I do and acknowledge its awesomeness. I have a lot of ego tied up in this couple-hundred-dollar commodity good!

      • I would say the most prolific and successful brand of handgun in the world, along with the Glock 19 and the 17 probably being the most prolific 9mm handguns in the world. The Ruger P series had an estimated total production number of between 1 and 2 million. You can think all of us Glock and Sig purchasers for driving down the demand and price for Rugers. You’re welcome!!!

        • I would guess Glock is probably the most prolific handgun around the world, and I would guess the 17 or 19 is the most prolific particular handgun. But I wonder…Glock has only been at this for about 45 years or so.. S&W and Colt have been at it for twice that, and Beretta has been around darn near since the time people figured out saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur go boom. Regardless, I don’t dispute that Glock has made probably a record number of pistols.

  3. I don’t deny the Rugers are fine handguns and especially for those prices. But I like to shoot what I carry most frequently and that is a Glock 48. That thing just seems to really point on target naturally for me. Also like the thinner profile for IWB carry and light weight. But some days when the weather is cooler I also carry a Ruger57 or a S&W M&P in 10mm. Call me capricious.

  4. Send one to Tamara to wring out! She’s probably one of three people left in the industry who actually will say both pros and cons about a certain firearm and you’ll get a well broken in handgun in return. Plus, she’ll take some cool pictures of it too.

  5. My new copy of Handguns Magazine arrived this week. They have the Ruger P85 featured. Kind of clunky looking. But better then nothing.

  6. I’m glad to hear that people have had good luck with P-series Ruger. I had one a long time ago (Don’t remember the model, it was a DA/SA .45 if that helps) and it was an unreliable piece of shit. Light strikes, jams, not as accurate as my 1911. Plus being big, heavy and clunky. Never liked it. But it’s good to hear that mine was an exceptional experience – I do encourage gun companies to make guns us poors can afford. 🙂

    • Well, most of these people are talking about the 9mm Ruger which was a somewhat different variant than the .45. You’d think theyd be pretty similar except for caliber, but sometimes when you switch to a different caliber than the one the platform was designed around, weird stuff happens….9mm Glocks made into .40 Glocks, for example.
