Range time with S&W M&P .45

Some time at the range today. I had a new-ish pistol I came into that I wanted to try. A S&W M&P in .45 ACP. Historically, S&W autos kinda sucked but I really like the M&P. Whats interesting is that this one, in .45 AARP, is a double-stack magazine but the grip is so narrow that you wouldnt think its any bigger than a 9mm. The interchangeable backstraps are the secret and, I gotta say, compared to a .45 Glock, this thing is much nicer in the hand. Also, it shot quite well.

While Im on the subject, I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you wanna save some money on buying self-adhesive target dots, head down to the hardware store and buy yourself a roll of blaze orange duct tape. Presto – turns everything and anything into a target. And, it does it cheaply.

Tear it off to whatever size you want, slap it onto a paper plate or backing of butcher paper, and you’re ready to go. And….hopefully your target skills will improve. Or not.

  1. Had one of those M&P’s a while back. No complaints!
Traded it for some ESAPIs if I remember right.

  2. Love my M&P… because when I point it at the target it, the bullet hits there. It goes BANG every time, too.

    • ‘Twas a full size and the mag capacity was 10-rd, but larger capacity magazines are available.

  3. I love mine in all calibers, both full and compact. Fits my hand much better than other brands and for most that should be part of the choosing of which firearm as long as it shoots.

  4. I have had one for 10+ years. It’s been a great gun. I’ve always shot it well. It’s not exactly stock anymore. Apex trigger and reset, Wilson Combat sights, extended mag release (short thumbs). About 5 years ago I got interested in 45 Super and an M&P 45 makes an excellent host. Heavier recoil spring and that’s it. The gun has a fully supported chamber which is crucial.
During Covid, 45acp was sold out everywhere. 45 Super didn’t seem to register with a lot of people and it stayed available for a long time at all of the usual big online retailers. I was getting it around $1 a round which wasn’t out of line for what it was. These days the good deal is about $1.50 a round.
Now it’s my woods gun. North Idaho and NE WA have plenty of bears and moose. 255gr hard cast from Underwood at 1100fps. I don’t feel bad about not having a 10mm or 44 Mag anymore. I did end up getting a slide racker, that 25lb Wolff spring resists enough that the slide serrations start to carve up my fingers.
I love guns that can run more than one caliber. I’ve never looked into a .460 Rowland conversion. One day it’ll become an itch that needs to be scratched.

  5. Great pistol. Years ago someone like CDNN or it’s ilk had the 14 rounders on sale cheap, so I have a boot box full of those now. Local guy does slide cuts for red dots so I have been considering that as well. Great shooter.
