Age come on apace

Liberace, back in the day, sued a tabloid for implying that he was gay. (And, of course, he was but back then it was a secret. A poorly kept one..I mean, look at the man…but a secret nonetheless.) So Liberace sued and won a judgment against the tabloid. When asked if the stress and spotlight of the scandalous trial was upsetting to him, Liberace famously said “I cried all the way to the bank.”

Fast forward to the other day when I was hitting the bargain meat bin at Albertsons…which I do every day on my lunch hour since they are nearby. So I found a half dozen pork tenderloins marked down 50%. Ok, protein is protein..lets head to the check out. The guy working the till asks me how old I am. I ask him why he needs to know. Turns out, the first Thursday of every month is ‘Senior Citizen Day’ with a 5% discount. Apparently their threshold for senior citizen is a rather low bar and I qualified. So, on one h and, I’m pretty jazzed about getting 55% off on bargain meat, but on the other hand I’m pretty annoyed that I look old enough that someone would ask me if I’m a senior citizen.

I cried all the way to the deep freeze.

  1. I was barely over 40 when our crew stopped at a Golden Corral in Illinois. We were all kind bugged–me because I was the youngest & got the senior discount (unasked for), and the other two because they were older and didn’t.
All those hard miles in my past, I reckon.

    • Yeah. My wife and I were driving cross country, stopped at a Golden Coral for lunch.

As we were finishing, she noticed the receipt and started laughing because they had given me the senior discount.

She stopped laughing when I pointed out that they gave it to her as well..

  2. I mentioned the senior discount to a kid and asked if I was old enough. I guess 70 does not look like it used to.

  3. I have come to the conclusion that aging increases your “grey man” quotient (hair color notwithstanding). You are less remember-able and and lower on other’s threat quotient. On the other hand, some people may see you as a potential prey (see “snow-balling”). However, I seriously doubt that would apply to you. The only real downside is you are way down on the dating ladder, and of course the back pain that just never goes away.

      Thank God for Daddy issues!!

  4. I just got my first senior discount earlier this week at a thrift store. Discounting started at 50…I just turned 55. Plans need rethunk all the sudden. lol

    • I don’t ask for most discounts – senior, veteran, whatever…Frankly I don’t bother, and thankfully I don’t really need a free coffee at McDonalds, or whatever..

But when it’s offered? Well, OK

  5. Hmmm… I’m thinking that I will start asking my doctors and surgeons for my “Senior Citizens Discount”…. Might get a few strange looks but I guess it couldn’t hurt to ask….

    • Ask for a cash discount instead. A lot of practices will discount for cash since it saves them the time and expense of dealing with insurance companies.

  6. Sign above the marked-down meat at my favorite foodmart: Do not ask for a discount. Do not ask for the manager.
    Tangential rant follows:
We need some consistency nationwide concerning age limits.
In Wisconsin, any age is allowed to sit at the bar.
In Indiana, my 5yo wasn’t allowed to enter a restaurant because they served alcohol.
My 70+ self was in Walgreens weekly buying cancer sticks and Rx drugs for clients; they required a scan of my DL every time to verify my age. Another drug store next door didn’t even blink when I picked up NARCOTICS.

  7. Coming up on 70 and I will take every discount they have! The wife routinely got carded for alcohol into her 50’s.

Liberace was a great talent and one of the all-time attractions and major money makers in Las Vegas. Personal habits aside, he was a nice man and world class piano player. Unfortunately never got to see him but all the old timers raved about the fantastic show he put on.

Something I admire in people, be good at your job, no matter what it is.
