Well, Ive given it much thought and care and although Im not 100% on the matter, it looks like Im going to go with the IOR 2.5-10x42mm scope with the Dragunov style reticle. Of course, the trick now is to come up with the $600 its going to take to buy the bloody thing. Sadly, it wont end there…then I’ll need a good case, cleaning kit, sling, bipod, etc, etc. If I start saving now, and dont stumble across a cheaper one on ebay, I might be able to afford a scope around, oh, March.

Sportsmans Guide got back in some of the German Flectar parkas with liner that I am a BIG fan of. And, check it out kids, theyre a mere $20, And they beat the US field jacket combo on so many levels. You really should trust me on this..get one. I’ve worn mine in some mighty cold Montana evenings and its warm, comfy, roomy and just a great piece of gear. And only twenty bucks! I ordered three more. Most of the time, the Western European surplus (esp. the ‘Aryan’ countries like Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway) have much better milsurp than the US stuff. By the way, the Flectar pattern really does a nice job of camo
=====
I received some Blackhawk gear the other day. Some of it I like, some I don’t. (I dont like the fact that ALL of it was made in VietNam). I like the Tactical Tailor stuff as well as theg ear made by Kifaru and a few other smaller US outfits. Anyway, I’ll be posting a review of some of the Blackhawk gear later.

I’ve 2 15-gallon water drums that need to be cleaned and filled. I need to work on that over the next day or two. Also have another SKS that needs degreasing. If youre going to get an SKS (and why wouldnt you???) definitely hold out for the Yugo SKS. A fine example of an inexpensive but high quality weapon. The SKS is not my first choice to run out the door with, but its cheap enough that its my first choice for what to leave in a truck, hidden in the rafters of a cabin, buried in cache or handed out to underequipped party guests. And ammo is less than ten cents a round. How can you beat that? Only thing even comparable in terms of price is a 10/22 and I’d much rather punch holes with the 7.62×39 than the .22 LR.
=====
I should take advantage of the relative quiet of winter to start working on replenishing my ammo stores. Shot off alot of 9mm, .45 and .223 this year and I need to sit down in front of the reloading press and crank out some replacement ammo.

By the way, speaking of camo…Ive a set of the German winter camo. You know, the reversible stuff that goes from solid white to white with pine splotches…not bad. WIll try to get some pics up later in the season.

  1. Zero,

    Unless you are really set on a variable power (and I wasn’t) I can highly recommend the Super Sniper.

    Yes, was originally built for Tasco, but Tasco is a contract manufacturer- they build them cheap or they build them nice, depending on the specs and the intended market. This was not one of the cheap ones. They were trying to win a Navy contract. It doesn’t even have Tasco anywhere on the scope, because SWFA took over the production contracts after Tasco fulfilled their government contract.

    Read some of the reviews. It is a really good scope, especially for the money.

  2. Yugo SKS – It looke like the grenade attachment is just pinned on. Have you tried to remove that yet? I’m not sure if I’d like it better with a bare muzzle or threaded for a FH… ??

    Interesting SKS models… what about the Albanians? They look like an interesting yet reasonably classic looking variant.

  3. It is, as far as I can tell, pinned on. However, I am leaving it there for several reasons:

    * Lack of a compelling reason to remove it
    * It protects the muzzle
    * It offers some flash supression ability
    * I might come across grenades for it
    * Adds a bit of weight to the end of the muzzle for recoil control

  4. As I understand it, Tasco doesnt make *anything* they simply contract out to a manufacturer and then slap the Tasco tag on it.

    I’ll look into it, but Im really liking that waterproof, shockproof, nitrogen filled, reticle-etched-on-glass IOR scope. Doesnt hurt to look though.

  5. Do you think that scope’s better than the competitive offerings by Leupold?

    Thanks for the tip on the parkas, I ordered a couple too. Hell, for that price, the only real issue is storing them.

    I’m starting to loathe Blackhawk in general, simply because of how much they’ve expanded in such a short amount of time. I think their offerings are all over the map, quality wise, because of that. Regarding Tactical Tailor, I like the TT backpack quite a bit. That said, my man Helmie said he was less than impressed with them, as compared to some other retaliers. He mentioned one, but I forget. If you’re dying to know, I’ll go ask him again. Regarding Helmie, he started offering some higher end gear, and is prototyping more as I write this. His first in the new line (SERT systems) is a carbine case:

    For what it is worth, his gear is produced in Vietnam as well. He just can’t be competitive, price wise, if it is made in the USA. That said, if he picks up a govt. contract, he’s going to have to start getting some made here, but that will likely add a minimum of $100 to any single offering if made here vs. overseas.

  6. I’ve got a Romanian SKS and really like it. It’s a nice, compact semi-auto rifle and 7.62×39 is a real rifle round. I’d get my park’d, but the bore sucks, and there aren’t any drop-in replacements. If I ever get a lathe, I’ll buy a blank and make a new one for it.

    Unfortunately, the biggest parka is L. I seriously doubt that’d fit me. I’d really like one, though.

  7. What do you think of Eagle Industries? When Blackhawk came along, I couldn’t believe how so much of their stuff appeared identical to the Eagle products… I’ve got some of their stuff, and I like it a lot. Besides, it’s made in the USA…
