While Im pleased that Im 99% done with my purchasing of FAL magzines (officially) it occurs to me I have absolutely no magazine pouches suitable for the FAl mags. My magazine pouches are either for AR mags or AK mags. While I’ll undoubtedly pick up a few high-end .308 pouches from Tactical Tailor or some of the other outfits, I was thinking about purchasing some of the surplus HK G3 mag pouches that are on the market. Cheaper Than Dirt has them for ninetynine cents for a dual mag pouch. Rubberized plastic very similar to whats used on an entrenching tool cover. What I’d like is about a dozen of these things I can string to gether to form a bandoleer of mag pouches I can just throw over my shoulder and grab the FAL with.

So 2004 was, from a terrorist activity standpoint, a bust. All well and good, as far as im concerned. Im in no hurry to eat freeze drieds, drink stored water and spend my nights huddled around a radio. At the same time we have…hmmm…North Korea doing their usual thing, Syrian and Iranian concerns, the ongoing nastiness with the fanatics and of course, our own homebrewed gestapo state. I seriously need my own country.  A nice, quiet, extraordinarily well armed and defended little isolationist state….completely indiferrent to the outside world, trading and dealing with all nations equally and ready to roll up the welcome mat the minute someone gets too friendly.
=====
I need to do some travelling this summe and find a nice little few acres in the Middle Of Freakin’ Nowhere to lay claim to. Theres parts of this state where you can literally buy a house on a lot for less than $12000. But Im not looking for that…No, I want some acreage about as far off the beaten trail as I can get while still being able to access it in all seasons. (Although the form of access is negotiable…I’ve no qualms if the only way to get into it in winter is on a four-wheeler. Better for isolation.) Just a nice few acres that later on a small and remarkably well constructed little oasis can be built on . Ideally it would have a little elevation so I could build into the side of a hill, have reliable water from either well or, best, a year round creek (which unfortunately would shoot the price into the uncomfortably high numbers.) which would be lovely for mini-hydro, lotsa cover to remain hidden, some area to grow veggies, and just genearlly a nice little pocket of homey-ness in the middle of nowhere. Then when things finally get Majorly Wierd I can load up the vehicle (another project in itself) and head to my happy little redoubt.

When I was 19 had fantasies involving Nicole Kidman and a tub of Crisco, now my fantasies involve real estate. Infer what you will.

Speaking of vehicle, thats another vastly expensive and complicated project that needs to get tackled. I very much would like a nice, easily maintained vehicle for for just such an occasion but that vehicle by virtue of its properties would also make a great vehicle for hunting season. Older Bronco, Land Cruiser or some such.

Snowing here today. I should get out the winter camo and get pictures.

  1. We’re looking for land, too. Unfortunately, “out in the middle of nowhere” is getting harder and harder to find within bug-out distance of here. Of course, we’re getting kind of tired of the city anyway, and may just bug-out prematurely and permanently.

  2. Same here on the real estate fantasies. For mag pouches I’ve been trying out a couple of surplus options: canadian fal mag pouches, and these totally too-big US pouches of some kind, I forget what they’re for but they were recommended to me and are entirely too bulky. The canuck one is alright, though, if a bit unweildy with the straps. I’ll have to try out those you mentioned since I’m not real happy with either of the ones I have so far.

  3. i kinda like kurt saxons rule for survival. he says to only get a few things that are helpful in any situation (gun/ammo, reliable truck that sort of stuff) the only other thing that you really need is cash, the more the better. the theory is its really hard to plan for everything an even if you could you might not be able to get to your supplys. Enough cash however will get you everything you need when the time comes.

  4. I’ve got a couple of those HK mag pouches. I like them and I’ll buy a few more the next time I order from CTD. I’m thinking about cutting the top off a couple to use to hold FAL mags in a 3 gun match.

    You got any reccomendations for a shoulder bag for FAL mags? Something that holds 3 or 4 mags that I keep by the rifle for very quick “Grand ‘n go” gear?

  5. Off the top of my head I cant come up with any ‘dedicated’ bags, although Im sure there are some out there. Were itme, Id get a buncha single or double magazine pouches that use PALS or ALICE webbing and attach them via the webbing to a ‘general purpose’ type bag that features similar webbing. My Tactical Tailor backpack, for example, has layers of PALS webbing on it so I’d just stud it with a buncha attached mag pouches. I think Blackhawk makes a carry bag specifically for mags but I really try to avoid their stuff since its made in Vietnam.

  6. Commander, i don’t know what your policies are on entertainment items for the Zerobunker, but if you don’t already have one, i would like to reccomend a card game you might find enjoyable, the game is called “Skip-bo”

  7. Hmmm…bunker entertainment is usually sitting around talking about which state we’re going to take over after the radiation count falls, but I suppose card gams may have their place. Got a link to some info?

  8. Mounting pouches on a backpack would make it troublesome to reach for reloading. If you’re looking for a sling-over-shoulder-and-go, try looking at a chest pouch with detachable shoulder straps. You can replace them with a padded one from most luggages that’ll allow you to sling it accross your body one shouldered, and the waist strap would secure it when time permits. If you get one with PALS webbing, you could attach a few mag pouches along with some small GP pouches for items such as first aid, food, etc. Just remember it’s grab-and-go, and not a long term solution, when you put it together.
