Zombie burnout

I’m rapidly losing interest in ‘The Walking Dead’. It seems that the writers have gotten lazy and any time they need to come up with a tension-filled episode they resort to the cheap and easy plot device of someone being taken hostage. *yawn*

However, since TWD is over for the season, the companion series, ‘Fear The Walking Dead’, has resumed. Whereas TWD was starting to bore me, FTWD continues to enrage me. The ‘we have to help them!’ mentality, coupled with a stunning failure to grasp the severity of the situation, drives me nuts. In fact the only reason I’m bothering to watch it is for the excellent, subdued, performance by Ruben Blades. His ‘seen it all’ demeanor and weary acceptance of the new way of life is compelling, and his character is played very well by him. Other than that….I’ll be thrilled when some of the main cast members start getting killed off.

At the moment, I should probably be worrying about other things than television programs…it’s an election year with a truly grim outlook. Although election day seems a long way off, you and I both know that the real panic buying starts much earlier. It seems like every election we say ‘this is the most important election ever’..and it is – until the next one comes along.

  1. Also, nobody, but NOBODY is as lucky as the Saviors roaming the woods sneaking up on group members. They all got caught? And they’ve survived up to this point escaping other bad guys in the woods? Green Berets assisted by scans from orbiting starships ain’t that lucky. You’re right, writers got lazy….I’m out. When TWD resumes, I sure hope there is some good Infomercials on…writers for those more believable at this point. Bad guys, captured, escape…Bad guys, captured, escape…Bad guys, captured, escape…

When is it the group’s turn to kick some and take names? Never apparently (pssst, hey Gimple, Hurd…you don’t have to follow comics…just a tip)

Perhaps when it comes back it would be a good time to go to my local indoor range and practice technique.

  2. Ditto here. I have quit watching the show since about a month ago. Just the same thing every week and no longer worthy of my time. And yes, there are much more better things to do with my time and more instructive things to watch.

  3. We watched FTWD and I had to laugh at how my non-survivalist better half was yelling at the TV on why they were doing this or that. Yes, I also am cheering for a few of the cast members to go away, but that’s one hell of a nice boat. don’t understand why it wasn’t already loaded & ready to go. It almost seemed as if the season premier started the morning after they arrived at Strange’s place when Cobalt was to happen.

  4. Last few episodes of TWD were really terrible. People doing dumb things out of character just for drama. The new evil group is over the top in ways that lack credibility (IMO) for the situation (given all the chaos, how could they be that big, well fed, and well equipped, that sophisticated in messing with people?).

The problem in part may be the popularity. They will get ratings even with crappy writing at this point. I don’t have much motivation for the next season either.

  5. I quit watching “The Walking Dead” because it has become formulaic. Run into bad guys, have a war, see which character gets killed. I’ll try “Fear the Walking Dead” for a bit and see how that goes.

  6. “FTWD continues to enrage me.”
Yes. I’m with you on this one.

They have to do it this way, though, as they’re depicting average, every day California liberals during a crisis. Everyone needs help, right now, forward thinking be damned.
Once I came to the realization that they’re deliberately telling the story this way, I calmed down a little, though the gaping plot holes written in are starting to annoy me now. “Here man this short wave and let me know if you hear anything” *20 hours later, no check in from Dad for status updates, kid is chatting with pirates and giving away their location* /facepalm… but I have to remind myself, these people, with the wonderful exception of Colman Domingo, are neophytes, innocent, and completely naive.
Strand’s character is the main reason I’m still watching. He’s got something cooking and knows a lot more than he’s letting on, I wager.
Although, that thought, if reality, leads me to another character plot hole; if he knows that much or is that prepared, where the fk is his team? He should have 2 to 2 people already with him. It would have certainly injected some anxiety for the blended family to see 3 guys show up in battle kit, Strand’s Security Force, to meet the boat for departure.

As for Blades.. they haven’t given him enough to do to connect with me, yet. I think he shined in the episode where he took the solider into the basement. That dark side of his past coming out in such a controlled, metered way was very foreboding. There was not a hint of the possibility of being able to BS your way past that guy. It was tell me or suffer. No middle ground. I think a character with his past skill-set in this current situation may lead to some interesting situations and morality puzzles.. Maybe he’ll get a hold of one of the inbound pirates and… well.. discuss things 🙂

As for Walking Dead? I was disappointed they didn’t give Negan more time. After the second roadblock encountered, they should have been captured/corralled then and then have Negan go off on a 45min Come to Jesus Meeting.

So if you don’t know who met Lucille, who do you think did?
If you think you know, are you basing it off of the comics?

Based on him saying ‘Champ’, I’m thinking it’s gotta be a male, and I’m thinking Carl. Older people call kids Champ and Sport, right? *shrug*

    • K. here.

It was not Carl. Negan said if anyone makes a move to try and stop him “to cut out the kids'(Carls’) good eye and feed it to his old man(Rick)”. So I’m pretty sure they’re both safe bet to not be “the one”…

  7. You must have been listening to me earlier…I had the identical conversation today. As much as I hate to admit it, I’m growing really tired of the same old thing with TWD. Colossally stupid moves like anyone of importance being outside the walls at the same time. Sheesh.

As for Fear, I watch mostly for Ruben Blades. Although I’m taking a liking to the Strand character as well. He should get smart and dump them all overboard, but keep Salazar.

  8. I have been having this very conversation with other people I know who watch both shows. After 6 years of Zombie Apocalypse and fighting other survivors, The group on TWD appear to have learned nothing. Even Abraham, the Army Sergeant, has completely failed to turn the group into a more effective fighting force. Instead, they either all go off in separate directions without telling anyone or, they all get into a flimsy RV and drive from one roadblock to another, until they fail. it has gotten hopelessly dumb.
FTWD, at least, is showing things from the beginning, and that fascinates me. And like you, I think the Reuben Blades character is by far the most interesting thing on the show. I hope they don’t kill him for a while. The teenagers can go anytime. Silly little idealists.

    • oh man….when the teenage girl used tired and worn, “we gotta help them”…the writers must have thought none of their audience had ever watched one of those new fangled whatcha call yer tv sets before. Still, there are 3 reasons I will go back next week, 1…Mr. Salazar, 2…Mr. Strand, 3-see how apocalypse unfolds. Seeing the land of the liberals get bombed brought a warmth to my heart…got a little teary eyed…

      TWD proper…wont be going back.

  9. Enjoying Blades as well as the characters Strand and the druggie kid. But the we have to help them and the pretty but dumb daughter…Man.

  10. People don’t watch these shows with me anymore. The main comments that come out of my mouth when watching are, moron, idiot, kill ’em, leave ’em and nope.

Like most of you I’m still watching for Strand and Salazar. Madison and Travis seem to be coming to grips that the world is screwed, yet still have the horror of each act/scene to beat down that sparkle of hope they hold on too. Nick is embracing the horror, much like Strands advice, being the addict and in that drug house for weeks at a time (Ep 1) he has seen and done things the others just don’t want to see.

As far as that idiot of a daughter Alicia and the “angst ridden” Chris… they get the bulk of my idiot and moron comments and “wth” comments.

I had a glimmer of hope for the series when Salazar did the unthinkable and opened that stadium to overrun the base. Brilliant move. However with his past… why not pick up some of that hardware that was getting thrown around and left on the ground. I can understand the Kalifornians being afraid of the evil guns but with Salazar’s past? Like on the story sync… Tactically wrong and morally wrong.

  11. When TWD runs out of novel plot ideas, we get backstory on characters and horror movie formulas (don’t open the door, you fool!). Both TWD and the spinoff are more committed to the horror show formula than the survivalism themes. Unless you need lessons on what not to do, it does not offer much for a survivalist.

    • This is true, but a TV show where everyone is safe and out of danger wouldn’t be very watchable, would it? Gilligans Island would have been pretty short if the professor had fixed the boat in Episode One.
