Its a short article, so here it is:

Missing hunter found after 10 days
By Gazette News Services
WISDOM – Search crews on Friday found a Hamilton man missing for 10days after his vehicle broke down while he was coyote hunting in theBig Hole Valley, authorities said.

Roger Nagy, 55, was found in a mountainous area 12 miles north of Wisdom.

He flagged down a search plane about 1:30 p.m. and was picked up by rescuers about a half-hour later.
Nagy, who was suffering from exposure, was airlifted to Community MedicalCenter in Missoula, said Russ Sigman, a member of Beaverhead CountySearch and Rescue.
Nagy’s dog accompanied him through the ordeal, during whichtemperatures dropped to 45 below zero, said Beaverhead County SheriffJay Hansen. Nagy apparently survived by eating provisions that he carried in case of emergencies.
“People don’t live 10 days out in the wild, so we were excited we were able to find him and he’s doing well,” Sigman said.
Nagyhad last been seen Jan. 2, when he told friends he was heading on ahunting and trapping expedition. The friends notified authorities thathe was missing on Jan. 6, and a ground search began the next day.Weather precluded an air search until Thursday.

No word whether he will be lobbying for laws marking roads, barring media from S&R efforts, demanding radio alerts about how to survuve, etc. like the family of the late Kim.

Moral of the story here: be prepared.

  1. I love the “apparently” in that sentence. As if his emergency provisions might not have helped him survive.

Ten days in subzero temperatures. That’s one tough, smart, lucky man.

  2. It’s a clear example of what not to do and how to get yourself killed. Sad, yes, but it’s still a bloody good example.

If someone gets in an open boat without a radio or provisions and sets out for Texas from Florida and gets themselves killed in the process, what do you say? “Don’t pick on them because that’s mean?

Winter is cold, it can kill you. Soft pink city people don’t keep extra food and don’t think ahead on things because everything is super convenient. In Kim’s case, his habits endangered his family and got himself killed. The Montana man was fine for 10 days.

  3. Course there was that possibly apocryphal story of a Slovak man who had the 2 cases of beer along when his car was buried by an avalanche. He used to get out of his snow buried car. Drank the beer and peed out the window to melt snow he was digging out. Good way to stay carbed up and hydrated in a way. Of course rescuers found him staggering down the road nearly drunk off his feet. 😉

  4. Pointing out what he did wrong is fine.

Implying that the Kims’ actions following his death are worthy of scorn, whether you agree with them or not, demostrates a lack of class.

  5. “People don’t live 10 days out in the wild…”

Horseshit. People have been living their entire lives “out in the wild” for millennia. Foolish and unprepared people don’t live 10 days out in the wild.

  6. I don’t think he’s scorning the actions as much as he points out that the Kim family’s proposals are geared more towards victimization (helping people who have become victims of a backroads mishap) and that this fellows actions are more towards taking personal responsibiltity for one’s self and loved ones.

  7. ah

another good example of being prepared. yet his story be lost on so many more that stupidity is a good survival trait. nuff said, Wildflower 07
