Last Blogger Standing

Well, it happens from time to time….a couple of my frequently-visited blogs have decided to hang it up and go from ‘survivalist blog” to just “survivalist”. They’ll be missed, but I hold out hope they’ll be back someday in one form or another.

One of the reasons I don’t have a blog list on this thing is because they come and go so fast. I’ll go to someones blog, check out their list of other blogs, and half of them are either 404 or haven’t been updated in five years.

Blogging is not all groupies and lucrative endorsement contracts. Not even close. Not even close to being not even close. Sometimes it’s just a chore that borders on being a pain in the butt.

Me, I’m ambivalent. There are times I don’t feel like posting, and sometimes I can let a week go by without sharing my brain droppings with the world, but I try to post at least a few times a week. Some more, some less. But it’s been a good way for me to stay focused and informed on preparedness. I’ve been doing it for over 15 years now, and I’ll probably keep at it until the FBI snipers get lucky, or I’m drafted to a cabinet position with FEMA.

In the meantime, I wish for the best for those bloggers and I thank them for their years of work. And, if YOU think you’ve got what it takes to blog…go do it. There are plenty of blogging websites that will give you everything you need. Who knows, you might be the next Big Thing in preparedness blogs.

  1. Thank you for doing a thankless task. I don’t know how bloggers come up with their subject matter – I’d run out of things to say in less than a month I think. Blog writers and the feedback given often inspire great ideas and ‘never thought about that’ brain material to roll around in brain pan.

  2. Your blog survives! That’s walking the walk, right there.
Tell me again why you ashew advertising? I understand not doing AdSense or some other such nonsense but why not just a few well placed ads of awesome products that you believe in?

    • “Ewschew”, actually.
I don’t really eschew it, I just never got around to doing it. A little part of me thinks that, for me, it’s a little…I dunno….crass? I’d feel a tad disingenuous. Like I wasnt blogging because I want to, but rather because I aw it as a way to make money. I dunno.

      • Well, with my first attempt autocorrect tried to make me write achoo. I’ll take what i can get…

Quality advertising is not crass IMHO. Go for it. You deserve to make a buck.

  3. And then there are those blogs whose owner never watched Seinfeld, where they would have learned how to go out at the top of their game ( we do NOT discuss the series finale! ). Instead, they jumped the shark and are pale befouled shadows of their former selves yet insist on continuing to post as if they were still worthy of consideration. I won’t embarrass anyone by naming names.

  4. Hey, I don’t plan to go away. Just not blogging anymore. My plan is to put more energy into my life and preparations. If the creative juices start flowing I’ll probably write, there are a couple books in my head.

        • It would be really nice to read something from you again… you’ve got a style with words that I appreciate. Anyway – while I ‘get it’ and understand your shift please know you will be missed. Cue Music: Thanks for the memories…

    • Was there a reason why you decided to close up the blog entirely? Soooo much great info there.

And speaking as someone in the publishing industry your book is likely already written on your blog. Your further ahead then most. Repurpose a few articles, update old info on some others, add some new content, tie it all together and you are most of the way there.

      • No single reason. A combination of things including better using my time, focusing more on my own preparations and shrinking my online presence. It has probably been brewing for awhile.

        You have a point.

A book of articles from the blog that are cleaned up a bit is a good idea. I have considered it (as well as a couple of fiction books) but maybe now I will get it out of the idea phase.

If you would be willing to potentially advise on some things in this arena please drop me a line @ theotherryan@yahoo.com

  5. As paranoid as I am, just reading the things I do I feel like I’m already on half a dozen watch-lists hahaha

  6. TOR, I hate to see you go. You and Zero have definitely been two of my “go-to’s” for years now. Always loved how you both bounced ideas off of each other and gave your own perspective on common themes.

  7. This blog inspires me and makes me laugh and think Thanks for your dedication dude!!!!! Keep rockin

  8. It’s WAY harder than it looks, even to just throw the door open to discussion. It does give you an audience when you do feel like you have something important to say.

And, it gives you a quick way to answer the same questions that keep coming up- just point to your previous writing on the subject.

What sucks is if your contribution to the conversation mostly took place in comments on other peoples’ blogs, and then the blog goes away… especially if it does so without warning and you don’t get a chance to suck down the whole thing.

Keep up the good work Commander!
