Guns guns guns

I’m starting to wonder if the guy who texts me the messages about new guns that have come into his shop for sale is really doing me any favors when he does that….

I get the usual “Some guns came in. Come on down and take a look” message.

What I didnt get were two 1940’s era Model 70 Winchesters. One in .30-06, which was nothing remarkable…zillions out there, and the other was a .257 Roberts. Hmmm. I would have bought them with an eye for resale, but the prices were higher than I felt comfortable gambling on. What did I get?

  • A Marlin 39A which I am hoping to trade to a buddy for a very clean, very pre-Remington 336 in .30-30
  • Yet another Remington 870 12 ga.
  • A lovely 6″ S&W 17 K-22 from the 70’s
  • A 6″ S&W 686

Price? Well, I think its a good deal. $1100 for the lot. The 870 goes in the rack with the rest, the 39A gets traded for a .30-30, the K22 is probably going to GunBroker, and the 686 will get flogged around to see if I can trade it for a GP-100.

:::sigh::: I was so sure I wasn’t going to make this as gun-heavy a year as last year.

  1. I bought a GP-100 the first year they came out. I ran some pretty heavy .357 reloads through it and shot a fair number of competitions with it and finally sold it to a buddy of mine who has since passed and his son still uses it. I do like Rugers! I recently bought the GP-100 Competition Match in 10mm Auto and will take that out to the range once the weather breaks. Good luck getting a GP-100.

  2. Quote a price on either Smith sir. Assuming good condition as you wouldn’t mess with a rust bucket.

  3. Just remember, one more than you already have is one to many….. Juss sayin.. Oh yeah, don’t forget the BLOAT….

    • That seems like some rather…short sighted…logic. Is one more dollar than you already have too many?

  4. Those are all nice weapons. I myself have a weakness for Remington shotguns, what can I say? At least you will never have to sit there and say “Scheiss, why didn’t I buy that damn (fill in the blank) when I had the chance!!!

  5. I notice that you talk about your acquisitions quite often and openly here – are you concerned about any kind of records or traceability?
While I don’t think it is likely to be a national issue, I don’t rule it out completely and think any prudent person would also consider it possible.

    • I’m not sure what the relationship between blogging and records/traceability you’re referring to.

      • I’m talking about buying guns in store versus private party, and know that you bring it up, discussing either online.
I tend to not discuss my purchases online and prefer to purchase without paperwork when I can.

        • According to the MSN we would all be terrorists if we were ever arrested…the cops would take one look at the number of guns over 1 and crap themselves…more than a 20 round box of 9mm? Terrorist! Just look at the picture of the “cache” of guns in the oh so convenient recent news story of the white supremacist coast guard lt…mediocre compared to most prepared individuals… completely dwarfed by others…most deer camps have that much firepower…but he is a terrorist… suspicious timing of that story btw…

          • Yeah, I’m suspicious too – I think that was a drug investigation that got upped because of the guns. As of when I read it, the feds had not been involved, so I doubt they were known about before hand.

True, while I like to keep somethings quiet, there are so many lists with so many people on them that in practice (at this point!) there is nothing to worry about.

Ok, this was about a guy that had a hit list. The guns were the tools he was most likely going to use to carry out his plan. I noticed you left that part out and created your own alternate story line!!! Believe it or not there are bad people out there who use guns!!

          • To 3rd man…I don’t really believe he had a “hit list”….I think the media make alternate story lines all the time…Covington kids, Smollett coverage, Russian dossier…I could go on but it would get redundant…but hey…you can believe whatever you want…

          • Until I see what they claim his ‘list’ was, I’m going to ignore it. For all we know, his ‘list’ could have been people he didn’t like or a list of headlines mentioning those politicians. When I see a picture of a list that says something like “people I want to kill”, THEN I’ll believe he had a list.

          • Neither of you have to worry about that I guess, unless you’re picked for his jury. This is nothing like the ones you cite! So, move on nothing said here will convince you otherwise including publishing a photo of his hit list. You will just say the .gov made it!

      • I don’t want to be “that guy” but let’s try and stay civil here and not take this sideways and turn it all political. There are enough blogs like that. That’s one of the reasons WHY I check in here every day. Great info without having something shoved down my throat.
Sorry just wanted to get that off my chest.

  6. That is a great price for that package deal especially that K22 if it truly is “lovely” !!

  7. I love my 686, carried it for years before transitioning to Glocks….. I will say the GP 100 is built like a brick s@&$ House, drop it off a 3 story building and you are still good!

          • First, I was making a joke about the toughness of a Ruger Revolver….Secondly….I think Jonathan was busting my chops, jokingly……And I’m a Glock guy…..carried one daily for 15+ years. I’m on board with Glock’s!

          • That chopper pilot (NYPD) was hired by Glock afterwards. He ran their Armorer’s Course at SHOT Show in the early 00’s. They threw a hell of a party (invite only) then.

          • There are other chopper test as well. You can see them on Youtube. The NYPD one is believed the first one though.

  8. Considering your skill with recognizing a deal and finding homes for your acquisitions with people who can appreciate their value iI would say you are talented rather than addicted. I do the same thing with old video games, there is quite a market for functioning vintage game consoles. I work with electronics by trade and there is a currently vast number of video games/ consoles sitting in pawnshops or on ebay that don’t work due to a lack simple maintenance. A thourogh cleaning and some contact cleaner is often enough to get them ready for sale. I dont know if you feel the same with your acquisitions but I enjoy the process more than I expect to make money from it even though I rarely take a loss.

  9. Heck the $1100 cost was probably made up for the two S&Ws, the rest were gifts. The 870 is around $200 – $250 (you didn’t mention if it was a Wingmaster or less expensive Express) and the Marlin 39A – sweet gun, though a bit heavy for my taste – I prefer the Mountie carbine. But a vintage Marlin is a joy to shoot.

You did very well I think – congratulations on your good fortune.

    • The only thing I can’t figure out any time CZ posts one of these stories is this: why doesn’t the “shop owner” who calls up CZ about such deals recognize the deals for himself? I mean, I’m sure he’s making some profit off of buying gun collections from grieving widows (or whatever), but at the prices we’re discussing, the guy is either completely scamming the original owner or passing on the vast majority of the profit potential to CZ for nothing.

There has to be something more to the story, I’m sure.

      • You’re making assumptions about the motivation of the person selling them.
He works in a coin shop that happens to take in guns from time to time. He’s not a gun guy and hates dealing with guns…the paperwork, the physical work, etc. So, if he can make a fast flip for a profit to someone who will even do the paperwork for him, like me, then he’s all for that. I don’t buy everything, and sometimes the price is too high for me, but at least I get first crack at things.

        • That makes sense, and thanks for the background. I had inferred that he was a gun shop owner, but I can see how a coin shop guy would just rather steer away from firearms business and all the paperwork it entails.

          • Yeah, if it were up to him he wouldnt sell guns because he hates the paperwork and whatnot. But…the owner wants to sell guns too, so….

  10. Stainless GP100 was the first gun I ever bought. Still my favorite one I own. This is my go-to when working with folks who’ve never shot before. If you’re looking to hook newbies- this works everytime!
