‘Pawn Stars’ off grid home

I was watching ‘Pawn Stars’ the other day and the main character bought himself a fire truck to use on his ‘off grid property’. The show then cut to a tour of the property in question and I was mightily impressed. A water turbine, outbuildings, pond, steel roofing, etc. A really nice looking setup. The best tour of it I could find available is a commercial promo from the battery company that supplied the batteries for the powerhouse.

How cool is that? And I rather like that little aqueduct at 0:48. Its a nice looking piece of property, I’d like to see more of it and get some detail.

I try not to be jealous of other people’s success…after all, they’re not doing anything I couldnt do if I really tried…but, boy, thats a sweet looking setup.

  1. His son Corey said ‘…so you pretty much have your own miniature Hoover dam set up…’ How cool is that. Must be a lot of water up there.

I’ve done that same ride up to Oregon from Vegas on a motorcycle, very worthwhile.

  2. A couple of years ago I lived about 20 miles or so from where he is located…he is up the Elk river East of Port Orford on the southern Oregon Coast…beautiful country as you can see. The big downside is that it is in wildly liberal Oregon. I was raised there back when things were ‘normal’ but they are trying so hard to out California California that we left and moved to Arizona.

    • Oregon, Washington, and Colorado are such interesting places. Outside of the large urban areas, it’s some of the most right-wing country you’ll find anywhere in the US. But the deep blue major cities dictate policy for the entire state. In that sense, they’re really microcosms for the entire US.

I think it would be fascinating to study what happens when rural areas of the state begin refusing to enforce laws crafted by the urban population centers. Does the center hold, or does there just eventually end up being two different sets of laws–inside city limits and outside city limits?

  3. It’s hard to feel jealous when Rick Harrison just seems like such a genuinely likeable guy.

If civilization ever collapses, with a compound like this he’s going to be set up like Stephen Bullock in “World Made by Hand.”

  4. That dam, tho…really worthy investment regardless of the size of the property being supported. Great video and he seems far more likable than on the (IMO unwatchable) program.

  5. It’s nice for him to have this level of success. One thing that bugs me is that few people know that “Pawn Stars” is a show that uses actors to pose as buyers and appraisers. I was once asked how much I would charge to get something I owned to Las Vegas the next morning by 8:00 for the show. I asked, “Why? I’m not selling or pawning it.” In any event, I quoted a price, and was then told that it was too high.

I have heard, but do not know for sure, that the program is filmed on a set that duplicates the real store in Las Vegas. That makes sense, because trying to film transactions among tourists who flock there would be very difficult. Nevertheless, viewers think that they are seeing the “real deal.”

    • Politics is staged. Hoax hate crimes are staged. Turns out cable tv is staged, too.

      Who knew?

      • I know a well-known actor who I will not name. He mentioned that he went to a party and was introduced to a fellow. He asked what the fellow did for a living. He responded that he was a “reality show screenwriter.” The gullible don’t realize just how phony these so-called reality shows are, but they are cheap to make and people watch them.

    • Apparently there are laws in Las Vegas barring any filming inside pawn shops and other businesses. That was the reason for the duplicate setup.
I suspect that part of it is to keep what happens in Vegas, in Vegas. Tourists/gamblers might not be happy with their faces being seen back home.
