Rack numbers

Went shooting this morning and I was going to take one of the 870’s that I picked up a few months back but hadnt had a chance to shoot. I opened the shotgun cabinet and looked at the row of identical 870’s and it occurred to me: I actually have to start putting rack numbers on the guns.

Anyone of you who have worn dogtags or badges know what I’m talking about. Those big stenciled numbers on the butt of a stock for quick ID among several identical guns.

Yeah… gonna have to go that route, it seems.

On the bright side, thats a fairly good indicator that I might be done with acquiring 870’s for the forseeable remainder of  my life.

  1. You mean until a really great deal on another 870 jumps up and yells ” take me Bill Tyler, take me!”

    • I put a wilson combat +2 extension on mine. It comes up slightly shorter than my 18.5″ barrel. My dad bought the remington one and I can tell you the wilson combat one was alot easier to put on.

      • Thanks! I’ll take a look at that one. I e got a 20” barrel so I may get a longer extension.

  2. Natchezss sells a nice kit by Carlson. Includes the sling base, extension tube, follower and the longer spring.
Forty years ago in the dark ages when you couldn’t walk in and buy a tactical shotgun you had to build your own.
In those days I used tubes and kits from Garth Choate. I still have my first gun I built. And once it made its public debut I made several for friends in law enforcement. It has never failed me.
I have also used the Carlson kits and they are great. Last fall I completed updates to my shotguns by swapping out the factory stocks with Ramline stock and forearm sets. Natchezss was running a good sale on those in their Summer sale catalog. Thirty bucks plus shipping. Couldn’t be more pleased.

  4. I feel your pain.
    They’re like M1911s, Glocks, ARs, and 10/22s.
(Or SKSs and AKs if I’d had the money sooner in life.)
    And books and DVDs.

If you leave two together overnight, they breed.
I’m still in the single digits on 870s.
    Barely.

But the Castle Anthrax armory will have racks, and rack numbers.
    It’s in my DNA.
