Blast from the past

I’m still going through the goodies from the estate sale I fell into the other day. I went and looked at some guns that were up for sale and they were very, very nice guns at very, very expensive prices.

Sifting through the ammo turned up this fun little blast of nostalgia. “House brand’ guns arent anythign ew…Sears, Western Field, Montgomery Wards, Woolworth, etc. all contracted to have rifles and shotguns made with their names on them. However, this is the first time I’ve seen house-brand ammo:

I knew Sears sold a lot of Marlins, Remingtons, and Winchesters with their name on ’em but I’ve never seen Sears ammo before.

One other thing of note, there was a like new Dillon 550B that I’m going to have to find a home for. If you’re local, and want a nice deal on a 550B, HMU.

  1. Worked at Sears in the mid-70’s. Bought a 30-06 ‘Ted Williams’ bolt action. Didn’t know anything about guns back then but when I took it to a gunsmith to have a scope put on it he said it was a Winchester model 70. Probably a factory second with some minor flaw that Winchester didn’t want to stamp their name on.

Some of those old ammo boxes can go for good money.

    • It is a great urban legend that the house guns were factory seconds; they weren’t.

  2. I have an old box of 20 ga. Montgomery Ward shells from the sixties…..

  3. I have a “Western Auto” tube fed 22, same as a marlin model 60. And a box of Western Auto 12 gauge 7 shot.

  4. 300 Savage? I could use those. Too bad it wouldn’t make sense to ship. I hope you have the matching rifle in the pile! I love my Model 99.

  5. I have an old Ted Williams lever rifle that’s actually a Model 94 Winchester. Shoots just fine.

  6. Let me know how much you want for the Dillon. Being in North Central Idaho, we are practically neighbors.

  7. Funny.
I have an old Western Field 12 gauge side by side.
    (Made by Stevens)
It was bought on a whim, but came without a trigger guard and forend wood, and it’s also lacking a buttplate.
    So…
    Project.
    Maybe.
    Or maybe not.
I do enjoy buying things from an FFL that have, where noted, “N/A” in the “Serial Number” spot.

  8. I remember going through my Dad’s ammo can after he passed and finding a bunch of boxes of Winchester .22’s. 50 to a box, 75 cents per.

    Good times.
