Cold, 22/45

I’m amused that pretty much everyone interpreted the last post to be about water storage when, clearly, it was not. It was actually about the gulf of ‘repurposing items’ vs. ‘purpose-built items’ and people’s attitudes on the two. But…you get your blog fodder where you can.

It got icy last night. Snow isn’t that big a deal here, but ice is what kills you. Or, at least, makes driving an exercise in applied physics. Fortunately, the roads I had to travel were major thoroughfares so they self-groomed pretty quickly. nonetheless, once the necessary driving was out of the way I stayed put. There is no point in taking unnecessary risks for little reward…I can just as easily head to Albertson’s the next day to pick up a some English muffins or orange juice. I’m not totaling a vehicle and rearranging a vertebra over some Tropicana. Pick your battles.

And, once again, temptation triumphed over common sense:

It’s like some sort of John Wick starter kit. Just the thing for a little trash panda remediation..I call it ‘Racoons Unlimited’.

  1. Good choice Commander. You could go a long way to find a better combination than a Ruger mk4 and a silencerCo Sporrow. The 22/45 was not available when I was looking for a host. Settled on a stainless Ruger mk2 with 6 inch tapered target barrel, had it cut to 4 inches and threaded. Front sight replaced as well. As it was already drilled and taped as a target model. No additional need for that. Looks good and shoots good. No complaints what so ever. The Sparrow is user serviceable, durable and simple. Will give years of service. To your grand kids if they can have such things as these. Not all that necessary to use suppressed ammo as short barrel will slow most projectiles below speed of sound. Just watch for shift of impact with the suppressor. More than a toy. I use it to eliminate squirrels, or tree rats as they are called here, from my wife’s bird feeder. With out alerting any neighbors. Suppressor rated ammo will not function at times due to short barrel. Watch out, it will lead to more hosts for the sparrow, if you are not careful. An old Remington 511 bolt action box repeater worked great. Shorten barrel to 18 inches and thread. A beauty with real walnut. Do not pick a tube repeater as you must remove suppressor to reload. Simple, I know you know that one. Can use CB caps to 22LR. Very Quiet! The MK2 is a little heavier than the 22/45 but feels good in hand.
    Good Shooting Commander!

  2. That looks like fun ! If your targets are within 30 yards and are small bodied, put a red dot sight on top and call it good !

  3. Commander, I have to say that you get some of the nicest toys. Not having an FFL and living outside the US of A, all I can do is watch like a little waif at the window as the party goes on inside. Oh well, such is life.

  4. I bought an ACOG in 1998 it still glows just fine, little orageish and less reddish but perfectly fine for low light shooting.

    • Using candles with small children in the house? Has she never heard of battery-operated lights? So much safer! When the kids were little & we also had indoor pets, I didn’t use candles at all. As the pets went outside to live & the kids were a little older, we graduated to oil & propane lamps. Now that it’s just us 2 old folks, we figure we’re safe with candles for short-term outages. But I would never have a lit candle by my bed – I fall asleep too quickly. If I forget to turn off the battery lamp, the only problem is dead batteries the next day. But those can be replaced. Neither I nor the house could be easily replaced.
