Monkey on my back

I need to get this gun buying thing under control. Or I need a small concrete bunker hidden in the woods. Who am I kidding? I’ve always needed that.

Years ago, my ideal was to have enough guns on hand to equip at least five other people with common arms…same rifles, same shotguns, same pistols, etc. It seems I can field a larger fire team now. Funny thing is, I’ve more guns than friends who can use them.

Ah well…they’ll always hold their value. I almost never buy guns unless theyre a good deal, and when people need a gun they’re pretty much not gonna bark about the price. Silver dropped, DJI got cut at the knees, oil crapped the bed…. but guns and ammo prices stayed the same or went up. Interesting, that.

  1. I believe them thar gunny things you doest speak of are referred to as tangibles. At anytime throughout history, tangibles were alway the “In Thing” to hang onto. Ifn you got it in yo pocket, you got it, nobody can take it away. Ifn you don’t got it in yo pocket, not so much, so to speak.
To many gunny thinga mabobs is always one mower than you already got….. BLOAT!!!! BLOG!!! (Buy Lots Of Guns)

  2. Hang in there with your silver. However, remember if you can’t hold it, you don’t really own it.

  3. “Just one more…”
I just randomly found one that I’ve been looking for for a very long time.
Hopefully, going to have it shipped to my LGS this week.
Time to order up another holster from Ted Blocker.

    • Dude, you cant just drop a comment like that and walk away. What is it???

      • Sorry good Sir.
I had to ask the seller two very simple questions to satisfy my mind. The ad is labeled kind of funny, so I think, (hope), it may be missed by others.
Hopefully, my questions get answered this morning. Woke up well before 5. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
The “buy it now” price is reasonable and I’ve already got the money out of the safe. Checked with the local LGS about doing transfers. It’s all good to go.
You can be sure I’ll be bragging about it if I get it.
P.S.- still haven’t made it to the off site shop to dig out things. Hope to in the next few days.

      • After several VM’s and emails, I got it. Finally got a live person. He was able to confirm my questions to my satisfaction.

I’m now the happy owner of a 1980 S&W 629-1 Five inch barrel .44 mag. It was a dealer exclusive back in the day.
I can return it if I’m not satisfied, but it would have to be in piss poor shape for me to return it.
Price was good. Just gotta find some nice grips and a holster.
I’ve got serious perms-grin right now.

        • Five inch anything in a Smith is pretty rare. I had a beautiful 5″ Model 27 in college that I lost in a cash crunch. Still kick myself. Email me a pic, I’ve never seen a stainless 5″.

  4. Commander, I had that moment recently. “Ooooh, that is a good deal,” and then I remember, it would sit next to the other three already there. Once I finish what I’m building now I promise I’m not buying another AR again. I hope.

As someone else pointed out, excellent tangible goods. Better than cash under the mattress I guess.

    • sounds like you’re on the verge of builder’s syndrome. get help quickly. i’m working on two at a time now. pretty soon i’ll be able to outfit a platoon. only I don’t have a platoon.

      • I think the delivery guy is starting to wonder if “Brownells” is some new food delivery service he hasn’t heard about.

  5. You’re going to be screwed if ammo gets impossible to buy. I know you probably have a bunch of that, but do you have enough to sell with the guns if you decide to sell them? And who would buy a gun if ammo is impossible to buy?

    • Why would a gun buyer expect the seller to provide him with ammo? Even if they did, it’s probably not what you want anyway, unless you just expect some white box range candy.

      • Im asking who would buy a gun if ammo was very scarce. If you buy a gun with the idea that you can always sell it and at least get your money back, you can’t if buyers can’t find ammo. And we know that ammo can be hard to find sometimes. It could get a lot worse.

  6. If one were looking for investments and worried about the ammo situation then stock up on reloading stuff. When people start getting desperate, which should be soon, the price of presses, dies, brass, bullets, primers and powder should be low enough to buy cheap and stack deep.

A few years back I picked up 8 pound kegs of powder for less than $10/lb and free shipping. Looks to be a pretty good investment now.

  7. A friend of my dad’s was into this kind of stuff when I was a kid and I remember thinking that he was kind of “out there”. Now that I’m about the age he was then, what I remember doesn’t seem so out there.
One thing he had that I still kind of would consider (if I didn’t live in a place with water 3 feet underground) was an in-ground safe he’d dug into his garage floor. To expose it, you had to back the station wagon out of the garage and lift up a piece of plywood and rug where the car had been.

  8. Commander….can I be your friend? HAHA! Seriously, like you, and others, have said. It will all only go up in value/barter.

  9. CZ, you need more friends.

Cultivate them like seeds in the garden.

P.S. you might also need more seeds.

  10. You have more than enough for a fire team, are you at squad level or platoon? Are you ready to trade in the safes for building vault/ armory?(sarc) Fondly remember the weapons draw for my security team for the arty battery(integral security and react forces in battery) made a heavy weapons platoon look lightly armed. Got the warm and fuzzy feeling from the new box of 80% and a jig.
Selling a rifle with a carrier full of loaded mags already zeroed for that load and cleaning gear sounds like a good way to do business. Caveat Emptor.

  11. Im asking who would buy a gun if ammo was very scarce. If you buy a gun with the idea that you can always sell it and at least get your money back, you can’t if buyers can’t find ammo. And we know that ammo can be hard to find sometimes. It could get a lot worse.

    • Ask yourself this question. How many people buy guns and only buy one box of ammo or only have the magazine(s) that came with the gun. The answer: a lot.

    • If times get spicy you may want to be very careful to whom you sell a weapon AND a supply of ammunition, you may find yourself getting the ammo back at around 3000 FPS. Using the spare armaments as CZ has mentioned, to outfit and equip trusted allies that didn’t have the foresight to prepare themselves adequately may well prove to be a far more judicious use of your resources.

  12. right there with you, finishing up 2 more ar’s when i have a crap ton already. but the value here has dropped. i have more in some than i can get out now b/c the markets flooded. a guy offered to trade me one for a couple of mega packs of tp the other day. its an addiction. there’s other stuff i want but still can’t stop building damn ar’s. make no sense….on another note, my neighbor who preps had a guy tell him he’s coming over to his house to get some toilet paper because “he heard you have a whole room full.” neighbor was so shocked at the guy he stammered something to the effect “you’ll get a facefull of lead instead” and the co-worker got pissed. neighbor says he only told select like minded trusted friends about his stuff. friends- them and women will get you killed every time.

  13. Just a reminder to all, who already know this, but worth repeating.
“If you want it, have the money for it, whether you need it or not, it’s always a good deal”…… Whether you already have a dozen elevendythirty doesn’t seem to matter much…..

  14. I showed TDW-Mark II your cartoon. She LOL’d, and then noted, “It’s a pretty poor likeness, but otherwise captures you pretty well!”

  15. An alternate strategy is a less capable weapon with a modest amount of ammo: less of a threat to me but in great demand by the completely unprepared. For example, my area has a number of used Marlin 30-30s for a good price. Buy cheap now, then package with 100 rounds of Remington Core-Loct and sell to the unprepared (or trade for something you need like dental services). Much better than nothing for the newly enlightened unarmed. An additional benefit: these will be among the last firearms to be banned (unlike that supply of AR-15s that will have to be sold on the black market because they are the first firearms outlawed).
