Power tool

I had to buy a cordless power drill today. I’ve used a corded power drill forever but I really wanted the convenience of a cordless. Anyway, the package I bought came with, among other things, this little tool bag:

Now, that tool bag is about one foot wide, eight inches deep, and about eight inches tall. It’s a small bag…really about the size of a lunch box. I was looking at it and started wondering…..hmmm. Let’s see if this will work.

It’s been a long day of being in the office and as 6pm rolls around you hear the zombie hordes marching down the street, with their black hoodies and baseball bats. You reach into the bottom desk drawer and next to the bottle of Old Grandad you have this little tool bag that you unzip. And….

Remove the contents….

And you’re position on the food chain just shifted upwards in a dramatic way….

And there’s still room in the bag, but barely, for two 50-rd boxes of ammo, a good light, and a couple more mags.

I like that little Ruger PC Charger a lot. I’ve wanted a little packaway carbine for years and the Uzi was the first iteration of it, the PC Carbine was the second, but this little charge absolutely takes the prize for compactness. Not my first choice for Omega Man-ing my way out of a tight spot, but a far, far, better choice than just a pistol. And it fits in a tiny little gear bag. How adorable is that?

If you run the Glock 9mm (or .40 as Ruger seems to be bringing out a .40 version soon) you really need to look into getting one of these guns. Right now they’re about as hard to find as an honest politician, but very worth it IMHO. Figure close to $600-650 for the gun and another $200 for the wrist brace.

It’s funny…every time I pull the PC Charger out of its storage container and assemble it I have this scene from the old “Lost In Space” movie play, unbidden, in my head.

  1. I keep a braced 1022 Charger and a SR22 pistol in a similar bag for a quick grab and go range setup.

  2. YES!!! I have a couple of those bags. Wouldn’t have thought of using it for that. I will have to see what I did with them.

What Clear mags are you using there? I’ve mostly stuck to the Glock/Magpul 15 rounders.

PC Chargers on gunbroker run about $850 before taxes/fees. If you find one in the $700s, you’ve done well. I’ve not looked elsewhere. I’ve looked to acquire another.

The braces are getting quite hard to find. I found a 2nd one hidden at my local gun peddler. Had to ask. He said $197+tax. SOLD. $200 is a steal if you can find it. Especially for SB Tactical 1913 model. Probably will save the grand and put this one on an AR to see usefulness.

  3. Imagine some petty thief stealing that bag, thinking they were going to score a pretty decent cordless drill, only to unzip it and find their misdemeanor just became a serious felony.

  4. Have you picked out a sling for the Charger yet? Probably ought to throw that in the bag as well.

  5. I have a pc charger that I put a vortex crossfire on. I’m really happy with it and the brace I put on it. Picked up some of the ETS 40 rounders today gonna try them tomorrow. Good idea on the tool bag gonna dig one out of the shop.

  6. Sounds a bit like a bag I was issued when I worked for the Michigan Department of Military Affairs. Officially it’s a canvas tool bag issued to maintenance personnel and Combat engineering units. But it works very nicely for use as a range bag or to conceal the contents. We normally used these for first aid kits, mag bags and they were just handy as hell when it came to firearms and related gear.
They are available from Sportsmans Guide. They come in black. OD green and tan. Very handy. I’m sure other folks would find a gazillion other uses for them. Including carrying tools.

    • I did a measurement on these tool bags. They are 19 long x 9 wide and 6 high. There are external pockets on both sides. This all has me wondering if a Mossberg Shockwave and a couple boxes of buckshot would fit. Going to try using the mini buck 1 3/4 buckshot and slugs. Those will work nicely for short range work.

  7. Ever wish the charger had a slightly longer barrel? I mean, it’s a PC, but still seems like an extra 4 inches would make a difference…

    • Ok, A) an extra four inches would kinda make a difference for all of us. B) This thing was clearly meant for a suppressor so I think the shorter barrel was to keep the overall length compact after you jam 6-9″ of supressor off the end of it.

  8. Those Home Depot bags are really nice. Heavy duty material, well constructed and metal reinforcement around the top so it stays when opened. I use one to carry ammo to the range.

  9. A couple of other ‘options’ – 1) Keltec sub whichever uses the same mags as your primary pistol – fits nicely in a book bag; 2) Recover 2020 by IWI (about 99 bucks) for your ‘spare’ 9mm Glock (34 or long slide 17) to match your primary (26/17/19) – would also fit into the book bag or one of the tool bags noted above. Likely to be less ‘attractive’ to would be thieves as well but should still be properly stowed……………….YMMV.

    • When I was looking at takedown carbines the KelTec was ruled out because it doesn’t have a track record of durability like the Uzi did. The Ruger is a new beast, but I think its construction and materials are more durable than KelTec’s.

      • I would also say the Keltec has some pretty bad ergonomics. It looks like a neat package, but I found getting a cheek weld and using the sights to be the worst I have ever found in a long gun.

        • Count me IN LINE for when KT releases a Glock mag Sub2k in 10mm. (strong rumors to that effect)
I see these as a truck/buried in the pack backups, not a primary rifle.

  10. Thought someone was looking over my shoulder…
Way ahead of ‘ya…Dubbed mine the “football”
    Also,
The Micro – Roni is a great investment for any Glock

  11. I bought a MCK kit for my Glock, has an arm brace, has rails on three sides, holds an extra mag, flip up sights but they are extra,
    Liking it a lot.
    Cannot post pictures

  12. So many guns, so little will to use them. Quite the opposite on the Left, thats why they are winning so far.

  13. Heheh, I’ve got my takeaway items stored in an old College Board (SAT) logo-ed carryall. My late wife was regularly involved in their test development and she had tons of the stuff. Very innocuous with a big surprise in it. When Ruger comes out with their .40 version I’m definitely interested.

    Regards

  14. CZ,
Maybe hitting that bag with a little black paint is a good idea. DeWalt is a good brand, and a thief might be drawn to the bag simply because of the promise that there is a goodie inside.

  15. One of those binary triggers like a 1022 would make that thing worthwhile. That would be the cats ass for crowd control. Still I just avoid the crowds. It pains me that the Kel Tec offerings are not very…. robust. Getting old makes the weight a real factor. Old geezers need to shoot too.

    • I’ve no experience with binary triggers but I feel that they are less safe than a non-binary trigger. The notion that once you pull the trigger you have to hold it back and then activate the safety to prevent firing another round seems like a recipe for problems. Additionally, as the line goes from “When we were soldiers”, if a time comes when I need something thats full auto there’ll probably be plenty of them laying around.

  16. I thought we were going to get a review of a new drill, I completely forgot where I was for a moment(I wanted to brag about my new Milwaukee over my old Dewalt). One more option is a steel plate in the bottom if things get poppin.
