Link – First Aid: Food Storage and Food Poisoning

A comment from the previous post on “I ain’t eatin’ that” generated a very concise and useful blog post over at Aesop’s. In a world where emergency medicine is wishful thinking, and you’re eating food that might not be up to First World standards, your first bout of food poisoning might be your last bout of food poisoning. Aesop tells it like it might be. Go read. Hall of fame post right there.

  1. Good article, Aesop is a talented writer and the medical knowledge is astute. Would love to have a combat medic like him (or her) in the group.

One word of caution. The vomiting and diarrhea can be the body’s way of getting rid of the toxins. Taking OTC meds early on like Immodium AD can keep it inside and possibly cause more damage.

I recall an article, can’t find it now, about a boy on a road trip to Florida with his family. Got GE and mom naturally gave him OTC meds to counter it. Wound up dying of renal failure, very sad.

    • I personally wouldn’t take either med until the signs/symptoms had gone on for 6+ hours.

But at some point, you want to end the misery, because there’s nothing left to vomit/squirt out.

      YMMV.

  2. Who’da thought an article about botulism and GE could be so entertaining ? Very informative, though.
