Thai one on

So, the Mountain House order arrived the other day. The cans have always had a long shelf life but apparently that now extends to the pouches as well. Behold:

I will actually be dead before the food hits its Best By date. On the one had, that’s a little creepy…on the other hand, as a survivalist, it kinda gives me a warm fuzzy. Although I ordered a buncha cans  (102 of them, to be exact) I did also wanna try some of the new flavors in the pouches. And…..Chicken Pad Thai sounded kinda good.

It says two servings but…lets be grown ups….you’re gonna eat the whole thing.

In its dessicated state:

Kinda looks like breakfast cereal waiting for milk, doesn’t it?

And after 1-and-1/3 cups of boiling water, and ten minutes sealed up in its pouch:

Yup..had to wait ten minutes. Ten minutes! Say it with me:

And the verdict? Good! Although it was not nearly as spicy as I had hoped. If you can get a tiny bottle of Siracha chili paste to go in your meal kit (as opposed to the mini Tabasco) it would not be a mistake. I understand that when it comes to food like this you need to appeal to the broadest common palate…and that means underspicy is better than overspicy. But…coulda been a little hotter. Still, though….I ate it all and liked it alot. So much so, in fact, that I might have to order a couple more cases. MH has a habit of discontinuing the flavors I really like. (For example, I really, really miss the Shrimp Creole.)

So, when its been a long day of post-apocalyptic scavenging and senseless violence, and the desperate-yet-morally-challenged coeds have been rescued from the Aryan blood gangs, it’ll be nice to relax around the campfire of burning “Biden 2020” placards and enjoy some fine pseudo-Thai food.

  1. Those Coed’s are NOT Morally Challenged they just KNOW what side their bread is buttered.

    Got antibiotics Bro?

Mountain house does make some fine eating. But the price per calorie….

    • The price per calorie of just add water for excellent cuisine still good for 30 years out is justifiable. My intel is pointing to a VERY severe food crisis coming. Bill Gates now own the most productive farmland in the country, China is #2. They are going to use food as a weapon the same way that Stalin did in the Ukrainian Holodomor in 1932-33 that killed ~12 million people. You best have 2+ years worth of food put away if it plays out like that. I’d prefer to have things I like and easy to carry and store in it’s freeze-dried state.

  2. It was a couple years ago they extended the shelf life of the pouches to 40 years. It was when they had pouches they could test that where 40 years old and found them fine. I’m not sure if they have any plans to test and extend the shelf life of any of it past 40 years (not sure it is really worth it for them), but there is no reason a lot of that can’t last way longer then that.

      • not sure what happened but when I ordered the 15 pouch assortment, Item #1362303, it gave me a $16 discount. Got 5 buckets, 75 pouches for $400 or $5.33 each.

        • sorry, correction, it’s hell to go senile. Order came to $319.95 with the discount so it was $4.26/pouch. Somehow it was cheaper instead of the 24 pouch case.

  3. I’ve eaten pouches so old and beaten up you could barely tell what was in them and the food was still fine, though I suspect it lost some flavor over the years.

How did the price go up through your sources? Where I usually buy, the price of the new pouches is significantly higher than it was a year ago.

  4. Despite having to patronage the Bezos beast…Amazon still had the pad thai in stock yesterday. MH was sold out.

  5. Glad to see that Fettuccine Alfredo w/Chicken is available again. Got a 6 pack of pouches for my bride who loves that. She was less than enthused that it was her Valentines Day gift! 🙁

  6. Mountain House extended the shelf life on Nearly all their pouches To 30 years back in 2016.
I couldn’t find the original press release directly on their website but I read it there at the time.

I did find this link which contains all the information for those interested:

    https://theepicenter.com/blog/mountain-house-30-year-shelf-life/

This extension is retroactive to any purchased in the last 30 years.

Here is a partial for those who don’t like links. I have no knowledge of the linked site. Merely the result of a search. I do recall the information as correct to the best of my memory — which is usually pretty good.

“New “Best By” Dates for Mountain House Cans and Pouches

In the near future, you will begin seeing this change reflected in a new “Best By” date on Mountain House packaging, replacing the current “Best Use By” date. Mountain House began printing new “Best By” dates reflecting the new 30-year shelf life on all pouches and cans containing entrees on June 1, 2016.

Note: Pouches containing ice cream and cheesecake continue to have a 2-year shelf life, while the military long range patrol rations (LURPs) and military foil packages (no oxygen absorbers) continue to have a 10+ year shelf life.

Add 30 years to the manufactured date to get the new shelf life “Best By” date. Here is a guide on how to determine the new ”Best By” date:”

    End of quote
There are the usual —store it properly admonishments. In general long term heat and humidity are not friends of food quality or nutrition for any form of food. I don’t care what anyone says, OLD canned food does degrade in taste and texture dependent upon item. May not kill you but some of it can be pretty disgusting. The best by dates may be conservative, but go more than a year past and many items, like fruit, get ugh. Many Beans, creamed corn, refried beans and other items hold up better. That said, everyone has different tolerances under different circumstances. But if you plan on it I suggest you try it now.
