Albino brain chiggers

In case you don’t get the reference.

It snowed, technically, yesterday. Just enough sleet and flakes to qualify as snow. But, like a positive test for Wuhan Flu that sends your school into pants-crapping panic mode, first snow sets into motion the winter stuuf that needs doing. Stuff gets put away, winter stuff gets taken out of storage, etc, etc….and on an emotional level we resign ourselves to the fact that, yes, the year is coming to a close.

For me, the biggest takeaway for this year is that it started under Trump and ended under Biden. I’ll let you figure out which one I think is going to go down as having caused more damage to the nation.

Time to get the Filson wool outta storage, dust off the boots, get the ECWCS underwear out, put the air conditioners away, put the winter module into the Bag O’ Tricks(tm) and get ready for the long, dark winter of my soul Montana.

Ah, fall…we hardly knew ye.

What with ‘supply chain disruption’ and various Wuhan Flu restrictions, this should be an entertaining holiday season. Fortunately, my resilience is at the point where supply chain disruptions mean very little to me…either I already have plenty or I have a way to deal without out. Hopefully, you are as equally resilient. We shall see, no?

Bring on winter. Let’s see who makes it to spring.

  1. “Albino brain chiggers”???

They prefer to be known as “chegros”, TYVM

    🙂

  2. I know how you feel.

Actually turned the heater on this AM, and put on long pants and a sweatshirt.
I was actually cold yesternight outside in shorts, after the sun went down.

    Brr.

    Winter is Hell. 😉

But I’m planning on a lot of actual winter work in the Sierras this year.
So some of that ECWCS and Filson goodness is coming along for the ride.
Just not down here in the flatlands.

    That’d be silly.

  3. Here in the Wild, Wild West, the temps are flip-flopping like a RINO Republican. The A/C ran a little over a week ago. The first four days of October were in the mid-90’s. Yesterday’s high was 69*. What a difference a week makes in teh desert! I turned on the furnace two days ago. My wife was cold. The thing needed to be test-fired anyway. I dragged the kerosene heaters out of hibernation, cleaned them off, tested them, and brought them up from the barn. We prefer the kero heaters to running the furnace during the day. They don’t use much fuel, and they use no electricity at all. Kerosene is supposed to be in short supply this year, so if you need it, panic early and beat the rush. Given what’s going on in “the supply chain,” that pretty much goes for ANYTHING you’ll need this winter.

  4. doesn’t get that cold here but I do enjoy my investment in heavy wool blankets, Italian military, like getting a hug from your bed and stay toasty warm all night even without the heat on.

My brother in law was in the Army and stationed in Germany during the winter, said he slept ON the snow with just two wool blankets, pre-gortex sleeping bag system days.

  5. Watching news and events unfolding around us seems we are living initial pages of Rawles Patriots novel…

  6. Up in the Great White North fall refers to the thermometer as well as the leaves on the trees. I am awaiting delivery of my Wind Lilly generator to augment my solar panels on my solar cube. The winter brings short days and weak sun but maintains a fairly steady wind. With that system and my little Honda genset I should be able to survive the few power interruptions. My supplies are good and I can survive most short term supply chain disruptions. So….I’m good TTFN
