Back the truck up..Pt. II

Oh merciful Crom….my lower back is barkin’ at me tonight. Why? Because I don’t have enough trusted guy friends to help me load 60 ammo cans of belted .30 and .50 ammo into my truck, take them to my house, and then unload them. Owwwww.

12,000 rounds of belted ammo. Ball, tracer, and AP.

The irony? I don’t even own a .50 BMG or .30-06 at the moment. But..when opportunity knocks, get a forklift.

Some goes into Deep Sleep, the rest…well…capitalism is a beautiful thing.

    • Not much of a story. Estate sale. Guy inherited dads ammo shop and dads dog breeding biz. Dogs need dog food so the guy sold off the ammo to keep the dogs fed. Right place, right time. 20 cans of BMG and 40 cans of .30-06. BMG is 4:1 Ball/Tracer, .30-06 is Ball/AP/Ball/AP/Tracer.

  1. Cmdr, My psychic sense is feeling a .50 cal in your future. Does Barret ring any bells? My I also recommend a back support belt and proper lifting technique.

  2. Good catch! Time to start looking around for a good deal on a used Barrett and a nice hunting rifle. My old boss used to swear by the 30.06. According to him, it can drop just about any game in North America.

    • For hunting, I prefer either the 7×57 or one of my .308’s. Never felt undergunned with my 7×57 and the 175 gr. RN. Trying to find a Serbu semi-auto .50….looks like a Barret 82a1 but is direct impingement instead of long recoil operated…should be much more accurate.

        • And the Armalite AR50 is much more comfortable to shoot than the Barret. I have fired both. The AR50 has very little more recoil than an AR-15 due to the muzzle brake and the weight of the item. Of course, the people on the sides of the shooter do suffer. The blast will clear the table, or if on the ground, throw dirt, leaves, grass, etc,

          I like my AR-50.

  3. Wiow, that is a nice problem to have. Even if a firearm to shoot it is not in cards, the ammunition will be valuable trading stock to others. I’m glad to hear the dogs will get their kibble right on time.

A .50 is well out of my budget and my soon to be 59 year old shoulder is very relieved to hear that. I’ve never shot one myself but was a spectator to watching one shoot bolt action shot off a bench in front of me. Naw, that is okay – too much for me. You have at it.

I haven’t owned an aught-six in 26 years. Like you, a .308 has been a faithful companion since the mid 70’s and with lack of BIG big game in south Texas, no need for heavy bullets here. Feral hog and whitetails. A few immigrant populations of Nilgai present but not where I hunt.

    • The Armalite referenced above kicks less than a 12G. Shark brake + 30# or so make a huge difference.

  4. If you decide to turn loose of some of that ’06 and it’s Garand-worthy, please drop me a note. Thanks for the ammo-erection. I thought this stuff was almost extinct.

    • I traded luxuries like newer cars, shoes without holes in them, HD televisions, non-discount food, and regular haircuts in order to feed my preparedness interests.

      • As long as you dont need the newest one you can often find a good HD television at a thrift store like good will for under $50. I got a 35in 720p for 40 plus 6 for the cost of a new remote. A grand total of $46 to replace my old damaged television and the replacement has non of the baked in data theft the new smart TVs have. I have seen similar deals pretty Often as others upgrade to smart TVs.

  5. Once again you make me feel like an amateur, lol.

    Most excellent score sir!

    *tips hat to CZ*

Peace and blessings to you all….

  6. there are thousands of 30 cal mg’s hanging out in basements. ma deuces will be fairly easy to come by soon.

  7. Dayum, what a score. And I can’t even find primers. Have only been able to find “some” black powders, every bullet I want is/has been backordered for multiple months, some cases available and last I looked, of 376 powders listed, 3 black powder (pellets) were available. I finally did get the last die I needed, after it being backordered for an entire year. Made right here in the US of A

  8. I emailed you but forgot to add: Is the 30.06 US made, or an acceptable substitute? No Turkish or Pakistani, please and thanks.

  9. I’m surprised that you don’t have a M1 in 30-06.
I don’t care what the AR fanboys say, the M1 Garand is America’s Rifle. IMHO every red blooded Merican should own at least 1.

All that being said, I’m happy that you aquired the ammo.
As for the 50 BMG, if the poop hits the air cylinder, might make for some interesting trade opportunities with the local gendarmerie.

    • Why would I have an M1? Virtually no military uses the .30-06 ay more so any surplus ammo is going to be wildly old whereas I can still find battle packs of .308. I’d be limited to an 8-rd clip instead of a 20-rd magazine, and I’d have to limit my ammo to a particularly narrow range of bullet weights and burning rates. It might be a fun range toy but as a practical gun it is a distant second to any modern .308 semi auto.

  10. Ah, time for a ma deuce then, and whatever The belted 30.06 may be fit for. I hear that prices for heavier machine Guns are dropping somewhat due to The expense of keepin them fed.

  11. Shot a Barrett mod 99 in 50 BMG some time ago. The recoil was not as bad as some 12 gage shotguns I have fired. If you look around a mod 99 can be found for around $3000. With scope. That sounds like a lot but with the better grade of ARs selling for around $1500. It is not beyond possibilities. Having a rifle capable of shooting 600 to 800 meters, accurately, is nice. With the extreme shortages of almost all ammunition, the 50BMG is surprisingly easy to find. Not too many shoot it. The US Military consider the 50BMG to be the smallest artillery they possess. Ammo is available in Ball, Armor Piercing, Tracer and many other types. It is the largest caliber, 50 cal, able to be owned by private citizens with out special licenses. At least in most Free states.
