Kurz II

Ok, I guess that , for some reason, you savages wanted some detail…

It’s a PTR9T which is pretty much a copy of the HK MP5K. I bought it for absolutely no good reason. In it’s current configuration it is less useful than a Glock 17 with a 33-rd happystick in it. In fact, in its current configuration it is fairly useless as a handgun. However…drop an ‘arm brace’ on it and you’ve got something.

But, honestly, the reason I bought it is for the cool factor. If I want a compact little package I have a CZ Evo. The gun is 1/2 the price of the PTR, mags are 1/3 the price, and the weight is less as well. But….it doesn’t have the cool factor of the MP5K. Heck, this thing will even fit in an operational briefcase. My plans are a lot less sinister. I just wanted one. With the moron in the White House getting more and more mouthy about ‘assault weapons’ bans, it seemed like a good idea to get anything I wanted that I didn’t already have….and that, my friends, is a short list. But, a little MP5 clone has been on my list for a while.

It does conceal nicely, though. Pretty cunning, dontcha think?

Original mags will be spendy, Magpul does make a drum but no sticks, and the only real aftermarket mags are either ETS or Unity (the same guys who made those AK mags a few posts back.) Honestly, I think I’m just going to tuck this away in the closet for a couple years and see if it appreciates in value as a result of a new ban. But….I might order up a few accessories for it just in case I decide that it’s just too shiny to not shoot.

So there you have it…..it’s not some deeply thought out part of a greater preparedness plan. Its an impulse purchase for no reason other than simply “I’ve always wanted one.”

  1. I got excited when I saw the red “F” on the selector but thought better of it and, checking the review of the gun on the Military Arms Channel, I found out that the full auto feature is disabled…
Here in Italy I had a chance of getting a good MP5 clone in 22lr for plinking, but magazines are awfully expensive. I should settle for a Ruger 10/22 takedown or a 22 conversion for my AR.
    Thanks,
    Daniele

  2. I have the PTR 9C and have had great success with KCI’s MP5 mags. Have about 30 of them and never ran into any issues with them in the past year or so.

  3. Hard to see but the folding stock looks very much like a Samson
mini-14 stock…which is an exact copy of the ruger military folding stock.

  4. Congratulations. I got an AP5 recently and I love it. The AC Unity mags work well, but they’re a little bit tight in the magwell. If you want to stick with steel mags, Gun Mag Warehouse has the MKE ones on sale right now and they work great.

  5. I would check if the folding stock that Choate made for the original MP-5k would fit (it should, if you get the steel end cap to mount it). The -5k was near worthless when handheld. In the late 80’s, early adopters for SWAT type use termed it a “room broom”, and thought it was okay for fights in a phone booth. Seems it took them about 7k rounds to get competent with it.

It was near the bottom of my list of subguns to shoot. However, with the addition of Choate’s swing out stock, to create the MP-5k-PDW, it became my favourite. There is/was a nylon shoulder rig for it, that hung a handful of 33 rnd mags on the off hand side.

Note: very early versions locked the stock both open and closed. The closed position is not needed or wanted, unless you are maybe parachuting with it. IIRC, you can file/grind the stop to release when pulled. HK marked stocks bring 2x or 3k the price of the Choate marked stocks. Latest versions may be shorter or have adjustments.

    • Oh, there’s an ‘armbrace’ in this things future, no doubt about that. Otherwise, it’s pretty worthless…or rather, its no more useful than a Glock with a 33=rd mag.

      • Yeah, the G18 is my favourite Glock. The benefit of the -kPDW over the G18 is it is more stable, so you have the ability to accurately hit at a greater distance, and can also hit a target with more rounds in a single burst.
The G18 will fit in any Glock holster, so more concealable if that is an overriding factor. The newer ported G18 may extend it’s capabilities into the -kPDW coverage a bit.

        • Yeah, but you have to compare apples to apples….the MP5k without the stock against a stockless Glock 18…then, in my opinion, the Glock has the advantage for being a holsterable gun. But when you add a stock to the MP5k, then you get a utility that the G18 (unstocked) does not have.
