Late to the party – the end of ZS

Anyone remember Zombie Squad?

Briefly, Zombie Squad (ZS) was a forum that used the metaphor of zombies to promote preparedness and survivalism. A very good strategy, in my opinion.

Anyway, I’m apparently the last to know but it seems they shut their operations down last year, including nuking their forums. Too bad, their tongue-in-cheek approach to things was actually rather clever, I thought.

They did a good bit of community services such as advocating for people to be more prepared and ready for whatever comes. And, once in a while, they put out some enjoyable videos:

Having been founded in 2003 (same year as this blog, interestingly) it may have run the course of the ‘zombie craze’ (Remember Hornady’s anti-zombie ammo?). But, the goal was pretty noble.

And although I think that couching preparedness in a fun and entertaining way like ZS did was clever, I have to wonder – if the only way you can relate to being prepared is to use the fantasy of zombies, then are you really serious about being prepared? But, I suppose it might have been a good way to move people who had been ‘prep curious’ into a more pro-active mindset.

Regardless, it was entertaining while it lasted.

  1. CZ, maybe one reason it shut down is lack of web traffic. You said that you hadn’t visited it in more than a year.

Alas, I never heard of it, and this “ain’t my first rodeo.”

  2. Zombie Squad was fun for a while there. I liked that they didn’t allow text-style abbreviations. I have one box of Hornady 9mm Zombie ammo.

  3. Still have my box of “ZombieMax” in .223. Only difference from regular ballistic tip is that the tip is green, not red. I got it just for the amusement value of “show-n-tell”.
I don’t recall ever seeing ZS, but I’ve been into preparedness since I was in scouts in the 1960’s. We became “preppers” because the media demonized the word survivalist to be the Rambo wannabe nutjobs. Real preparedness is about the mindset of being able to handle ANYTHING that happens, be it a flat tire, or a fridge that dies. If you’re prepared for TEOTWAWKI (or zombies), any lesser disaster is easy to handle.

  4. I was a member there for a while. I lost interest a few years ago. I was into in more for preparedness than the zombies, but just moved on after the posting became repetitive…as many message boards have.

  5. Zombie Max ammunition was another outstanding marketing campaign from Hornady. The 6.5 Creek More is yet another. Marketing, like timing, can be everything, but I roll my own Zombie Max ammunition. However, instead of Hornady’s V-max bullet that is used in their Zombie Max, I’m using their SST, or Amax bullet, in Lapau brass.

The appearance is almost the same, yet the V-Max bullet used is designed for varmints, or hits on decaying Zombies at closer ranges. It is ideal for SBR AR’s in 5.56, however. The SST is more versatile and reliable on all targets, at all ranges. The heavier Amax (ELD) are a good compromise in terms of bullet construction and terminal performance, and has an appreciably higher B.C. (ballistic coefficient). As Zombies shed the contagion, it best to deal with them at extended ranges.

Speaking of extended ranges, my Arken 4×16-50 Gen 2 turret scope may arrive tomorrow. For only $289.00, this is an exceptional value. I am telling all my friends about this scope. And from the same expert opinion that recommended the Arken scope, here is yet another outstanding recommendation from TiborasaursRex. I now gotta git some of this “snake oil” to lube up my old Swedes to further reduce reduce extreme spread, and the get them closer 1/4 MOA. Velocities are said to be increased 58fps in Federal’s .308 Match ammunition. This old Swede could also use more velocity as well.

Fortunately one of my Swedes is a ‘zero bore’ that has less than 100 rounds thru the original 1915 barrel, so it is an excellent candidate for Rex’s Snake Oil.. And I will share the Secrets of the Swede, the old 6.5×55 Swedish Mausers. Do not cut these barrels down, but take full advantage of the very long barrel to get 6.5CM velocities, and the extended barrel life that comes with the lower pressures under 51.000psi. 6.5CM has a max pressure of 61,000psi. This is a significant difference in pressure and the heat produced.

Higher pressure means more heat at the throat and subsequent throat erosion, and generally, thermal accumulation in the barrel. Heat wears out barrels. The original 29” barrel will soak up the heat better relative to typical 22 -24″ barrels. In addition, the Swede thrives and tends to develop it’s precision and maximum velocities with slower burning powders that produces the maximum pressures further down the barrel, that spare the throat by reducing heat erosion. This is an additional and important factor that contributes to the remarkably long life of Swedish Mauser barrels. The combination of factors, including of the lower pressure round, slower burning powders, and an extra 5-7 inches of length that acts like a heat sink, reduces the rate of heat built up and mirage seen through the scope making the Swede a more efficient tool for Zombie management. This rifle and ammunition is not used for the taking game animals. ;O )

  6. I was a ZS member for several years.
I wish they hadn’t zeroed the forums there was some very cool things in there.

  7. Oh yeah, I was a member there for a bunch of years and met a bunch of people whom I’m still friends with in real life today. I left soon after they started to start lean to the left and really shutting down some beliefs.
It was a good run, they did do a lot of good with the Red Cross and local food banks.
