Just another ‘beware the coming bans’ post

Unless you’ve been under a rock the last week, you know some guy in Maine (of all places) went sideways and killed about twenty people before taking his own life. As usually happens after these events, the usual crowd wiped the blood onto their faces and began wailing about ‘commonsense’ and ‘reasonable’ restrictions on…well..whatever they think was at fault.

To be fair, the administration really has it’s hands full right now and is probably not interested in getting into a domestic policy quagmire while it’s in the midst of a couple foreign policy quagmires. But…I’ve been wrong before.

But if they do get some traction on their usual ban-dwagon, you don’t want to be caught unprepared. It’s been 19 years since the sunset of the much-despised ‘Assault Weapons Ban’.  If you bought on pistol magazine and one rifle magazine each month (a very easy goal) since then, you’d have about 228 pistol mags and 228 rifle mags…an amount that almost everyone would agree is a comfortable amount to have.

And if you bought one ‘evil’ rifle every year, again not an outrageous or difficult goal, you’d have 19 AR’s in the safe.

But some people just will not learn. It seems like every time some whackjob shoots up a 7-11 and the media starts their campaign about ‘high capacity magazines’ there are people who sudenly think they need to buy. Dude…you should have had your magazine issues settled shortly after the ban expired. I encounter way to many people who think that “Oh, I have a dozen mags for my AR. Thats plenty.” That is wildly shortsighted thinking that fails to account for what perils the future holds. I’m not going to elaborate about that because I’ve covered it elsewhere on this blog more times than I can recall.

TL;DR for todays post: one of these days, these gun/mag bans will come back and you don’t want to be caught with your pants down. Stack it deep. And if you really want a positive habit to develop, buy one pistol mag per month, and one rifle mag per month. They are money in the bank. (Not that keeping your money in the bank is a good idea, but you get my meaning.)

    • They halt sales to foreign buyer excluding about 40 countries. Does not affect sale within the US.

        • And it will never come from the Commerce Department, ever!!! If Biden thought he could get away with it, he would have already done it.

          • The only truly infinite is the amount of stupidity. What would prevent Biden from stopping ammunition sales to all civilians TODAY if he declared the threat of imminent war required sacrifices from U.S. citizens. For the forseeable future, all ammunition production will only be to build up U.S. Military needs. The 2nd Amendment will not affecting firearm access at all, only what they use to be effective. Not covered is it.

Now look at your ammunition and realize that is all you will be able to purchase. These warnings don’t seem so crazy now, do they ?

  1. The old idiot is on vacation again. It’s these moronic Governors that worry me. My own here. And other idiots lime the idiot in New Mexico and New York. BTW. A federal judge just shot down the magazine ban in Commiefornia…… Again. Guess Governor Hair Gel will never learn. But he is busy right now getting Chairman Xi blessing to replace the old turd in November of next year. Seeing as how the Democrat party is now being run out of Bejing.

  2. Correct. Most readership here is think for themselves types that are way ahead of the curves concerning bans, rationing, barb wired layers of regulations etc. There is indeed a closing window of opportunity right now to pad up supplies and attend to matters of need. Expect summer of love 2024 spicy activities and follow on political tomfoolery in yet another ‘Merican election season. Having already worked quite hard at preps all these years, most folks should now just be coordinating their apocalypse attire wardrobe and accoutrements to aspire to being the most dashing and memorable of characters when the final exams take place. Stay stocked, prepped, as well as always ready to roll out. So as to stay frosty.

  3. Commander:
If he had run these people down in a pickup, would they be talking about a licencing ban?
    I don’t think so!
    It might hurt them…

    Ceejay

  4. the ones that scream bloody murder about ammo prices going up, “price gouging” , piss me the heck off the most. they had years now since the sandy hook shortage to stock up but they sat on their ass waiting for pre-pandemic prices to return during an inflationary spiral. stuff’s not getting any cheaper folks, stock up! what, they didn’t think anything else would ever happen? i think this is an intentional squeeze before the ban and confiscate plan. don’t wait, it won’t be available at any price soon.

    • I bought a bunch early summer… I figured inflation would soon counter dropping prices.
I didn’t expect war, but my timing was still good!

  5. The real Patriots have already stocked-up. The folks complaining are not worth the effort and will perish in the streets and camps.

    • The only people that get a pass are that 18-21 year old that is just now able to buy this stuff for themselves because of laws and budget constraints. Sorry about your timing!

  6. this is somewhat off subject, but don’t rely on using cash after a SHTF moment. Shoppers at a Meridian’, MS Walmart near Bonita Lakes are being turned away as the store closes late Saturday morning.

Staff are telling shoppers their systems are down, and they cannot accept ANY- ANY form of payment. cash or any other forms of payment.
when the computer systems are down, all large retailers will just shut the door’s.. better have what you need on hand at home before an emergency happens, not to mention the roads and the desperate people you will encounter along the way.
best to have it before hand and stay at home and take care of you and yours if that were to happen. let the unprepared slug it out.
    best of luck guys.
BTW Commander, i really enjoy your site, Thank You!!

  7. I went yesterday to local Academy and noted thought there were a decent amount of handgun ammunition, all of it was FMJ Ball. Not a single box of SP / HP ammunition for sale. Any one else noting the same ?

    • I’ve noticed the opposite – regular FMJ is light to non-existent, but HP and special loads are widely available.
In 2020, FMJ dried up first, I assume due to price.
I’ve seen pistol calibers go up some but .223 a bunch and 5.56 a huge amount, if you can even find it.

    • There’s no shortage of ammo in my area (central midwestern Red State medium-sized city). Plenty of all brands, grain weight, and bullet types across all mainstream calibers. Places around here are even running sales.

  8. I don’t worry as much about the guy who thinks 12 magazines is “enough” as I do about the guy who doesn’t have enough ammo on hand to even load 12 magazines.

So many gun owners think ammo is what you buy the day before you want to go shooting.

  9. Another tip: If you are squared away on a stock of evil “high capacity” magazines for the guns you already own you may want to pick up some for guns you either plan to buy or know are very common. I think you’ve advocated for this here before.

For example, I had bought some Hi Power magazines even though I did not own one, I wasn’t sure I wanted one but 10’s of thousands of Americans do own one and so that makes for a great barter item down the road.

Well, Turkish EAA started make a version of the Hi Power as it should have been made (extended beaver tail, aluminum frame, commander length-like slide, red dot ready, etc.) and so now I own one and I’m instantly set on mags for it.

  10. Couple of updates. The family of this mentally deranged individual warned the local Sheriff’s Department back in September that he was like a ticking time bomb. Then again last week the again made contact with the local Leo’s concerning Mr Cards mental state and the fact they believed he had obtained a firearm.
Interesting how that works. The FBI in most cases allows the purchase to go through with the end result being a mass shooting. The guy in Texas that shot up the church. This guy last week and in about 90% of the cases they give the okay on the purchase. Me thinks they need some new people doing the checks. Maybe living with all the tree huggers in Maine was what set the guy off. I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of it. It is funny that one specific that is almost always done in these cases is a psychological autopsy. Normally those would be used in court but either they have stopped doing them of they aren’t released. For obvious reasons.
