Winter arrives

Well, after a lovely week of wonderful warm days and crisp fall nights, winter came in last night like the KoolAid man. Heavy blowing winds, light snow, and the thermometer making a run for the bottom.

Time to transfer the winter gear to the truck, make sure the winter module is in my Bag O’ Tricks, and drive much more carefully.

And, you know, part of driving carefully means knowing when not to drive at all. Is picking up a couple frozen pizzas at Winco when the roads are icy really worth a trip to the ER and buying a new truck? Probably not. Thats one of the reasons we stockpile food to begin with – to eliminate risk.

Not sure what this winter is going to look like. (And, really, no one does…the notion that you can forecast how severe a winter will be seems akin to telling the future by squeezing the goat’s scrotum or something.) But you usually can’t be too wrong with “cold and snowy”. Really, the only variable is the quantity.

With all the stuff going on (and about to go on) in the Middle East, perhaps stocking up on fuel for heating mightnot be a bad idea this winter.

  1. Took my motorcycle out for a cruise here one PDR-NY. Heavy sweatshirt and leather vest. Nice day for a ride and probably not many left.

Lucked out and found a fuel oil supplier who is average if one dollar per gallon cheaper than the local guy. I run 2 daisy chained 275-gallon tanks, so that’s a decent savings.

  2. Freezing here in Florida also, Going down to 73 tonight, Yup, Sweatshirts and long pants, Yuck,

  3. Winter can’t come soon enough in south Texas. Next Monday, they are forecasting 40’s for the lows. !! Hell yeah, way more like it. Winter is only about 3 months of intermittent cool with a bit of cold nights. Rarely freezes, even overnight and snow is a very rare event.

This is waaay the hell down there, along the Rio Grande River (border w/ Mexico), about 60 miles upriver from mouth of RGR. A lot of seasonal visitor from the North who don’t like the Cold. So we get hit from illegals from the south and snow birds from the north.

  4. 85 today, 26 by wednesday they say and possible snow. never had snow before veterans day here. sky was red this morning, but weatherfools aren’t calling for anything. have to ready for anything when you leave the house these days.

  5. New tires and 4 new jerry cans for more k-1,the list is really long with a new place in the Great Lakes snowbelt. Anyone have recommendations for snow chains/ traction devices( regular snows of 3-12+ inches and plows can be late getting out)?

  6. My location on the Eastern Edge of the Virginia Piedmont had a Week of Summer, temps in the mid-80’s and Humid. Horses already with Winter Fur were Sweating and had to be rinsed with cold Well Water every Evening. Then yesterday, it went from 81 degrees at 1300, to Windy, 55 Degrees and Rain by 1700. Fastest Cold Front changeover in a while. Now back to Normal, nice Dry Sunny Days in the 50’s and just around Freezing at Night; a long ways before my lazy, 2,000 pound Dutch Warmblood will be trying to Hide under the Bed…
All the Rabbits in the Yard have Vanished, and the Mice are Pouring In to the Barn, Shed and House. Pro Tip – you can find a Chinamart, Plastic version of the “English Bucket Trap” that fits a 5-Gallon Pail – it’ll Drown 6 to 10 of the little buggers every Day.
