Article – Inside the American Redoubt

North Idaho has long been home to those seeking to escape the looming collapse of America. This is a region doused in frontier spirit; a land where people openly carry guns, and where bounty hunters still operate, tracking down fugitives hoping to bolt into Canada. It is here, on rugged fringes stalked by mountain lions, bears and wolves, that the American Redoubt was born.

Yet another article about the ‘American Redoubt’, as coined by Friend Of The Blog ™ ,Rawles.

The article doesn’t really cover any new ground, but I usually read these things with a critical eye because invariably they tend to imply a sinister racial overtone. People see ‘Idaho’, ‘Survivalist’, and ‘Bunker’ and the association is made. This article seems to skate around that but there is this gem “the Redoubt, and the man behind it, have become a threat to liberal America”. I wouldn’t have phrased it that way. Any threat is the kind posed by any idea that has the potential to change a  person’s beliefs.

Its the same ‘threat’ posed by reading ‘Atlas Shrugged’ or studying a new religion – a change to your way of thinking and evaluating the world. And, if someone thinks ideas are a threat then maybe they need to re-evaluate the belief they hold that feels so threatened.

The notion of a ‘Redoubt’ isn’t a threat to anyone except people who prefer that individuals who want to think for themselves be isolated from other like-minded folks. And, here’s the cool thing about living in a somewhat-free country – if you move to the Redoubt and don’t like it, you can move back.

Anyway, interesting article if you can adjust your footing for the slant.

  1. I lived in the Silver Valley after I got out of the Army, and I’d say abput 2004 was the last time it was “wild and free” before the coastal influx and property prices soared.

By “wild and fre” I mean meth being dealt in the bar shitters, local “unapproved” drug dealers ending up suicided in a dead-end gulch with a hole in their head and both hands seat-belted behind their backs, out-of-town drug dealers with $30K in motels being raided on Friday and $5K being introduced as evidence on Monday, only time to find a deputy was 11PM nightly when the Citgo in Wallace was getting rid of the old hotdogs, that kind of thing.

2006 was the last year of bugling elk, too many wolves called in otherwise, mountain lions picking off junkyard dogs and other pets from being displaced by wolves, and meth labs being the only houses under $80K were other incentives to sell.

I would hope it eventuall gets cleaned up, but I don’t hild my breath.

  2. Washington and Oregon are lost, Idaho is getting over run in Boise, yet no one talks about moving to Oklahoma. We make Texas and Florida look liberal. When the pistol brace ban came out the Sherrif of Oklahoma county (where OKC is) released a video where he said no one would ever be arrested for it, he literally said if we pull you over and see a pistol braced AR in the passenger seat we won’t do anything. That is from the most liberal place in the state. We’re the only state in the Union that EVERY SINGLE county went for Trump in the past 2 elections. People should strongly consider us unless they just love incredibly harsh winters.

    • Are you good folks in Oklahoma being crowded with pot farms? I hear the cartels are buying the cheap land and growing legal weed on it.

    • Idaho has changed alot in the last 20 years, and not for the better.
Spokane, lots of laws and immigrants, high heating costs, etc.

But to me the biggest reason to stay away from Idaho and Montana is the attention and articles like this – I’d like to be somewhere as good or better but lower profile.
My goal at this point is Eastern Oklahoma or Western Arkansas, but final location and time depends on several factors.

      • Regarding Eastern Oklahoma, did the state ever settle the disputes on that part of Oklahoma being tribal lands? Several tribes have claimed that portion of the state theirs and say they have the paperwork to prove it.

  3. Yeah. Those news piece articles are usually hatchet jobs put together by low tier reporters whom really should be replaced all together by an A. I. Robot. All negativity about redoubters and that horrible area they dwell in should be encouraged and supported. I always cheer wildly when a grizzly eats a camper, or a bison gores tourists that dress and act like dorks. Those misogynist, racist, neanderthals that drive those muddy trucks are my kinda folks to hang out with. (They’ll make very good Wolverines for your spicy times pick up team)Those folks are very adept at keeping the scumbaggery tamped down and there is no tomfoolery afoot in their towns. Embrace those long incredibly harsh winters, it is your friend. That non sunbelt environment contributes to the area culture and society by keeping the population hardy and resilient. Those snow anon people tend to be bigger brained, better strategists and planners due to having actual winters. Below freezing and below zero for half a year makes things quiet and comfy in those redoubter hamlets. If dissolution occurs, those redoubterites will have good real estate locations to stand up their own Swiss type nation state. Plenty of natural resources and re appropriated nuke missles. Winning. Redoubters stay frosty, location is almost everything in the big picture.
