Waiting on the weather to see if I’m gonna head up to the Beta Site this weekend. There’s plenty of things for me to do if I wind up staying in town, but I really really wanna get out there and set up the other gamecams.
As I was strolling the internet, I came across this:
There’s more than a little truth in there. I’d say my circle of friends, not acquaintances, is probably halfway between ’40s’ and ‘now’. On the bright side, though, those friends are closer than any of the friends from my younger days.
I suppose, for me, one of my litmus tests is whom I take up to the Beta Site. At the moment, the number of people I’ve taken up there can be counted on one hand of a high school woodshop teacher…and I don’t really plan on that changing. Might have a family member or two come out, but thats about it. I didn’t buy it for other people, I didnt buy it for entertaining, and I didn’t buy it for investment purposes…I bought it for me.
I’m hoping the weather is cooperative this weekend, but we’ll see. Gamecam pic from yesterday showed a buncha snow had fallen but maybe not enough to dissuade me. If it is, I will, of course, let you guys know and post pictures.

I hope your weekend plans work out. I agree with your plan of very limited list of invitees. Especially with what is going on in the world.
Funny how that works. As I get older my tolerance for people gets lower. There are days when I cannot believe the stupidity of the average human being.
The real challenge is saying NO and meaning it when they show up anyway.
I doubt any of us have OPSEC so good that some folks know we’re getting ready for crazy.
That’s why I have a MAG as I know I have to sleep sometime and it’s good to have friendly hands around when you twist your ankle (wondering if broken).
Even with expected company there is the serious risk that they will bring along best friends (biyfriends-girlfriends, etc) along.
Do you have a medical isolation plan? Even your best buddies can bring in a nasty flu into the camp. Indeed, a good idea when a bug does show up in the camp, keep it isolated until recovery.
why did you buy land you can’t access
Any land is accessable…its just a matter of how. I just got the place and Im still learning what the conditions are like in the various seasons, and learning what conveyance is required in those seasons.
Can I come visit?
I get the selectiveness of friends in ones older years. And sometimes family can be even more tempting to be selective. However I need to bring up the pitfalls of the lone wolf survivor type retreat. One person cannot survive long term on your lonesome. You get sick then what? Who does 24 hour surveillance then if it’s just you? You get attacked by a decent size force ( even 3-4 guys who use fire and maneuver tactics) and I don’t care how many ARs and P95s you got your chances are not great. In real life survival there are seldom the Darryl ( ala TWD) or Rambo types that live to a ripe old age. Check out this movie “ Survivor “ if you want to see a more realistic portrayal of the lone guy at his retreat in a post apocalyptic world. Eye opening. Guess my point you already know. You need other reliable like minded people to make it. Make sure they are part of your survival beta site story. Just my 2 cents.
There a rather pronounced difference between ‘lone wolf’ and having a small tight circle of friends..
Age is a wonderful thing if you take it the right way. Aside from the usual worn out bits and pieces, and the realization that the older you get, the more often the “check engine light” comes on, and the longer it seems to take to turn it off, age ain’t all that bad.
The older I get the less use I have for people in general and the more I like my dog, and he’s dead. IE: I’m sick of all the BS & nonsense from the whole works, and I’m not putting up with dumbassery anymore.
The biggest reason(s) I have in liking old age is that “The older I get the more I learn; The more I learn the more I realize how little I know”
