It’s not just for breakfast anymore

I was going to say that deep down, I’m really just a big kid. But, if you knew me, you’d say that its really not that deep down since my immaturity and ‘boyish charm’ are quite readily apparent on the surface. I mention this because when I saw that breakfast cereal was on sale, I went deep. What breakfast cereal, you may ask? Why none other than the palate-shredding extruded waist-expander that is….Cap’n Crunch (Although to be fair, I knew him when he was Lieutenant Crunch back in Basrah).

I love a bargain, and I love food. Mix the two together and you get a happy Zero. So, when they had cereal marked down to $0.99/box I figured “Ok, lets get our crunch on.”

Normally $103, paid $27, saved…a bunch.

I actually don’t usually eat this as breakfast cereal. Neither, I suspect, does anyone else. Its more of a eat-it-out-of-the-box-while-playing-on-the-computer thing. But, no matter how you do it, I  apparently have at least a years worth of the stuff on hand. And, yes, it’ll keep for a year.

In case anyone is curious, what is my favorite breakfast cereal to actually eat as breakfast cereal? Surprisingly, on of the most boring things you can imagine – plain Kellog’s Corn Flakes. (But it’s best not to delve too deeply into the rather…NSFW?….origin of corn flakes.)

So, there’s a couple of cases of kid’s cereal sitting on the shelves in the basement. I suspect they’ll last until about this time next year. Unfortunately, milk does not. And, yes, I’ve tried the shelf-stable milk and it just doesn’t taste very good to me. So..if I want to actually eat breakfast cereal qua breakfast cereal, I’m gonna have to run to the store once in a while for a half gallon of moo juice.

But..hey..bargain!

  1. Old boat cruiser trick. Mix the shelf stable milk with canned milk, adjusting to your taste. We mixed it 75% SS to 25% canned. Improves the taste and texture. Some mix it as much as equal. Same with powdered milk. Also doctor it up a bit. Use a tsp or two of vanilla. Or some other flavor you like. I have used a packet of instant coco to flavor a quart.

  2. That much cereal needs a cow (or a goat) and you won’t run out!

I’m usually jealous with the latest deal that you manage to step in to, but not this time. There was a time when I’d eat an entire box while watching the boob tube.

    Thanks for the laugh!

  3. I’m more of a Crispix type of snacker than flakes right now. For me, the flakes are harder to grasp without crushing them. I used to LOVE Buckwheat cereal, sweet bran flakes. I’d make a cup of cereal and have at least one refill.

  4. When my grandson’s we younger we put up some cold cereal. I used 5 gallon buckets, mylar bags, O2 obsorbers; just like the commercial ones. Difference was I was into each bucket full about $10 and they wanted $65 on line.

Might be time for “Crunch in a Bucket”.

  5. Kellogg’s corn flakes? Not for me. I live just south of the Cereal City. My mother worked at Kellogg’s, dad at Ralston Purina. Uncle at Post.
Unlike the old days corn flakes are made way to the south. Like South of the border down Mexico way. Oreo cookies made there too. Soo those are off the menu.
If you have never been there let’s just say they no lavas Los Manos after doing their business. Cleanliness ain’t next to Godliness or anything else down there. Just saying.

  6. Did you get any of the peanut butter variety? Much better than plain. Don’t think it can go stale, close to the expiration date as twinkies YMMV.
