Signs of the times

I don’t really need anything but, like the idiots that head to the beach after an earthquake to see the tsunami, I decided to go look and see what was available.

Two and a half years ago I posted about this place opening up and I took a picture of their rice and bean aisle:

And here is what it looks like today:

Whats interesting is that there’s even a bit of a run on…canning supplies. I stopped by WalMart to snag a dozen half-pint for making relish and……:

I already have hundreds of jars and lids, but I was curious to see how far the panic buying had gone. Answer: pretty far.

Shelf-stable Parmalat whole and 2% milk bricks? Yeah…gone.

I returned back to my abode and, to calm my nerves, took a walk through my stockpiles of LDS canned rice, oats, and macaroni…my 5-gallon buckets of rice, corn, sugar, and salt….my plastic bins of pasta….and my wall of Mountain House…..my 15-gallon drums of rice..and I am calm once more.

  1. 1500.00 cell.phone or 1500.00 worth of supplies? It appears most our fellow Americans are morons.

  2. Amen Brother…schools closed, courts closed….stores empty….bad mojo. Hoping that when the unprepared are out of food things don’t get ugly….. stay safe!!

  3. Schools are closing Wed here in Bama – we’ve got our first 5 cases. Even in my area where people tend to be pretty lethargic about everything, things are picking up in the stores. Went to Wally World this afternoon to stock up on fresh OJ (Florida’s Natural – only kind I buy) and to get a pack of frozen Mahi Mahi filets.

Walked around the store a bit (packed) The bread aisle was wiped out and folks were crowded in front of the dairy section. No masks or gloves back in Paint and disinfectants had been heavily bought. Ironically though (or maybe not considering where I live), in the drinks and water section there was plenty of bottled water but the sodas had been pillaged… Yep… Figures…

  4. By the way, if any of you are JM Bullion customers, they’ve been wiped out of supply of most of the popular items and have instituted a temporary $299 minimum order requirement. They are also projecting a 5 to 10 day delivery time due to record demand. I’m sure they have the details on their site. Luckily I was able to get my order in when AG hit low 14s today. They’re out of that stock right now.

  5. Yup, and it’s been a great comfort to my kids to see with their own eyes that we’ve got stuff. (8 and 10yo)

We are reviewing our usage and habits as most people continually and slowly increase their usage. 1/4 of the toothbrush is probably enough. If you have visible toothpaste in the sink when you spit, instead of foam, then you’re using too much.

Most shampoo says “quarter sized” amount in hand.

More TP is better than less, but is a luxury.

Half finished drinks, paper towels that aren’t completely wet, wipe one thing instead of wiping until the wipe runs dry.

When’s the last time you measured laundry detergent, or looked at the recommended amount on the package?

Almost everyone uses too much soap.

Times like this call for some re-calibrating and care in usage. It’s entirely possible we might be moving from a culture of abundance to a culture of scarcity. Be mindful.

  6. Just left Wally World and it is utter KOS. Went to Amazon and got a $25.00 bidet and it cut TP usage by the fair sex at least 80%, me 100%. Should have went last week and bought as much TP as I could and sold on the corner like a drug connection, would have made bank.

  7. It is interesting how you/we all here, still get a pinch of angst as this all begins to unfold….

This best end soon. I don’t wanna need to unpack phase 2 of our stash.

  8. Went to the local wallyworld in the closest big town and it was utter chaos. Most shelves empty. They had stock carts sitting out and people were shopping off them. My son is an ICU nurse in the nearest big town and called when he got to work tonight, they have 2 unconfirmed cases. Takes up to 4 days for test results.

  9. A positive item to brighten your day, Numrich has factory Ruger P series mags on closeout.

  10. I did a drive by of BJ’s and Costco yesterday, the parking lots were packed. I then went to total wine and I was in an out in 5 minutes. After that I went to my local Food Lion in and out easy peasy no problem, yes it was busy but it wasn’t the madness of the crowds and they were well stocked. (I wasn’t looking for TP)

  11. On a side note, my friend who lives about a mile from me and was a armorer for the governments special toys stopped by and showed me his new AR builds with the BFS 3 triggers. He said that this is not the first time that he has seen a zombie horde. But it is the first he seen it this intense this fast. He thinks that since we are being driven by a media bent on causing as much fear as possible that it is now self perpetuating with no bases in reality.

  12. I was at the Spokane Cash & Carry Monday & everything looked normal. Had to be in the area again on Thursday – different store, same parking lot – & things still looked normal. We’re north of Spokane & not seeing much in the way of panic. Tho now that schools are closed there might be panic about finding childcare if both parents work.

Of course, we’re not worrying since we have at least 6 months of supplies on hand. But that’s something we’ve done for years. It’s 2nd nature to buy things in large amounts.
